New Living Translation | NET Bible |
As Jesus was leaving the Temple that day, one of his disciples said, “Teacher, look at these magnificent buildings! Look at the impressive stones in the walls.” | 1Now as Jesus was going out of the temple courts, one of his disciples said to him, "Teacher, look at these tremendous stones and buildings!" |
Jesus replied, “Yes, look at these great buildings. But they will be completely demolished. Not one stone will be left on top of another!” | 2Jesus said to him, "Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left on another. All will be torn down!" |
Later, Jesus sat on the Mount of Olives across the valley from the Temple. Peter, James, John, and Andrew came to him privately and asked him, | 3So while he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, |
“Tell us, when will all this happen? What sign will show us that these things are about to be fulfilled?” | 4"Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that all these things are about to take place?" |
Jesus replied, “Don’t let anyone mislead you, | 5Jesus began to say to them, "Watch out that no one misleads you. |
for many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah.’ They will deceive many. | 6Many will come in my name, saying, 'I am he,' and they will mislead many. |
And you will hear of wars and threats of wars, but don’t panic. Yes, these things must take place, but the end won’t follow immediately. | 7When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. These things must happen, but the end is still to come. |
Nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in many parts of the world, as well as famines. But this is only the first of the birth pains, with more to come. | 8For nation will rise up in arms against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines. These are but the beginning of birth pains. |
“When these things begin to happen, watch out! You will be handed over to the local councils and beaten in the synagogues. You will stand trial before governors and kings because you are my followers. But this will be your opportunity to tell them about me. | 9"You must watch out for yourselves. You will be handed over to councils and beaten in the synagogues. You will stand before governors and kings because of me, as a witness to them. |
For the Good News must first be preached to all nations. | 10First the gospel must be preached to all nations. |
But when you are arrested and stand trial, don’t worry in advance about what to say. Just say what God tells you at that time, for it is not you who will be speaking, but the Holy Spirit. | 11When they arrest you and hand you over for trial, do not worry about what to speak. But say whatever is given you at that time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit. |
“A brother will betray his brother to death, a father will betray his own child, and children will rebel against their parents and cause them to be killed. | 12Brother will hand over brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rise against parents and have them put to death. |
And everyone will hate you because you are my followers. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. | 13You will be hated by everyone because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. |
“The day is coming when you will see the sacrilegious object that causes desecration standing where he should not be.” (Reader, pay attention!) “Then those in Judea must flee to the hills. | 14"But when you see the abomination of desolation standing where it should not be (let the reader understand), then those in Judea must flee to the mountains. |
A person out on the deck of a roof must not go down into the house to pack. | 15The one on the roof must not come down or go inside to take anything out of his house. |
A person out in the field must not return even to get a coat. | 16The one in the field must not turn back to get his cloak. |
How terrible it will be for pregnant women and for nursing mothers in those days. | 17Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing their babies in those days! |
And pray that your flight will not be in winter. | 18Pray that it may not be in winter. |
For there will be greater anguish in those days than at any time since God created the world. And it will never be so great again. | 19For in those days there will be suffering unlike anything that has happened from the beginning of the creation that God created until now, or ever will happen. |
In fact, unless the Lord shortens that time of calamity, not a single person will survive. But for the sake of his chosen ones he has shortened those days. | 20And if the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would be saved. But because of the elect, whom he chose, he has cut them short. |
“Then if anyone tells you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah,’ or ‘There he is,’ don’t believe it. | 21Then if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or 'Look, there he is!' do not believe him. |
For false messiahs and false prophets will rise up and perform signs and wonders so as to deceive, if possible, even God’s chosen ones. | 22For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, the elect. |
Watch out! I have warned you about this ahead of time! | 23Be careful! I have told you everything ahead of time. |
“At that time, after the anguish of those days, the sun will be darkened, the moon will give no light, | 24"But in those days, after that suffering, the sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light; |
the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. | 25the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. |
Then everyone will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds with great power and glory. | 26Then everyone will see the Son of Man arriving in the clouds with great power and glory. |
And he will send out his angels to gather his chosen ones from all over the world —from the farthest ends of the earth and heaven. | 27Then he will send angels and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven. |
“Now learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branches bud and its leaves begin to sprout, you know that summer is near. | 28"Learn this parable from the fig tree: Whenever its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. |
In the same way, when you see all these things taking place, you can know that his return is very near, right at the door. | 29So also you, when you see these things happening, know that he is near, right at the door. |
I tell you the truth, this generation will not pass from the scene before all these things take place. | 30I tell you the truth, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. |
Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear. | 31Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. |
“However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows. | 32"But as for that day or hour no one knows it--neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son--except the Father. |
And since you don’t know when that time will come, be on guard! Stay alert ! | 33Watch out! Stay alert! For you do not know when the time will come. |
“The coming of the Son of Man can be illustrated by the story of a man going on a long trip. When he left home, he gave each of his slaves instructions about the work they were to do, and he told the gatekeeper to watch for his return. | 34It is like a man going on a journey. He left his house and put his slaves in charge, assigning to each his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to stay alert. |
You, too, must keep watch! For you don’t know when the master of the household will return—in the evening, at midnight, before dawn, or at daybreak. | 35Stay alert, then, because you do not know when the owner of the house will return--whether during evening, at midnight, when the rooster crows, or at dawn-- |
Don’t let him find you sleeping when he arrives without warning. | 36or else he might find you asleep when he returns suddenly. |
I say to you what I say to everyone: Watch for him!” | 37What I say to you I say to everyone: Stay alert!" |
