New Living Translation | International Standard Version |
As Jesus was leaving the Temple that day, one of his disciples said, “Teacher, look at these magnificent buildings! Look at the impressive stones in the walls.” | 1As Jesus was leaving the Temple, one of his disciples told him, "Look, Teacher, what large stones and what beautiful buildings!" |
Jesus replied, “Yes, look at these great buildings. But they will be completely demolished. Not one stone will be left on top of another!” | 2"Do you see these large buildings?" Jesus responded. "Not one stone here will be left on another that will not be torn down." |
Later, Jesus sat on the Mount of Olives across the valley from the Temple. Peter, James, John, and Andrew came to him privately and asked him, | 3As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives facing the Temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew were asking him privately, |
“Tell us, when will all this happen? What sign will show us that these things are about to be fulfilled?” | 4"Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign when these things will be put into effect?" |
Jesus replied, “Don’t let anyone mislead you, | 5Jesus began to say to them, "See to it that no one deceives you. |
for many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah.’ They will deceive many. | 6Many will come in my name and say, 'I AM,' and they will deceive many people. |
And you will hear of wars and threats of wars, but don’t panic. Yes, these things must take place, but the end won’t follow immediately. | 7But when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, stop being alarmed. These things must take place, but the end hasn't come yet, |
Nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in many parts of the world, as well as famines. But this is only the first of the birth pains, with more to come. | 8because nation will rise up in arms against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes and famines in various places. These things are only the beginning of the birth pains." |
“When these things begin to happen, watch out! You will be handed over to the local councils and beaten in the synagogues. You will stand trial before governors and kings because you are my followers. But this will be your opportunity to tell them about me. | 9"As for yourselves, be on your guard! People will hand you over to local councils, and you will be beaten in their synagogues. You will stand before governors and kings to testify to them because of me. |
For the Good News must first be preached to all nations. | 10But first, the gospel must be proclaimed to all nations. |
But when you are arrested and stand trial, don’t worry in advance about what to say. Just say what God tells you at that time, for it is not you who will be speaking, but the Holy Spirit. | 11When they take you away and hand you over for trial, don't worry ahead of time about what you will say. Instead, say whatever is given to you at that time, because it won't be you speaking, but the Holy Spirit. |
“A brother will betray his brother to death, a father will betray his own child, and children will rebel against their parents and cause them to be killed. | 12Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. |
And everyone will hate you because you are my followers. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. | 13You will be hated continuously by everyone because of my name. But the person who endures to the end will be saved." |
“The day is coming when you will see the sacrilegious object that causes desecration standing where he should not be.” (Reader, pay attention!) “Then those in Judea must flee to the hills. | 14"So when you see the destructive desecration standing where it should not be (let the reader take note), then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. |
A person out on the deck of a roof must not go down into the house to pack. | 15The one who is on his housetop must not come down and go into his house to take anything out of it, |
A person out in the field must not return even to get a coat. | 16and the one who's in the field must not turn back to get his coat. |
How terrible it will be for pregnant women and for nursing mothers in those days. | 17"How terrible it will be for women who are pregnant or who are nursing babies in those days! |
And pray that your flight will not be in winter. | 18Pray that it may not be in winter, |
For there will be greater anguish in those days than at any time since God created the world. And it will never be so great again. | 19because those days will be a time of suffering, a kind that has not happened from the beginning of God's creation until now, and certainly will never happen again. |
In fact, unless the Lord shortens that time of calamity, not a single person will survive. But for the sake of his chosen ones he has shortened those days. | 20If the Lord had not shortened those days, no one would be saved. But for the sake of the elect whom he has chosen, he has shortened those days. |
“Then if anyone tells you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah,’ or ‘There he is,’ don’t believe it. | 21"At that time, if anyone says to you, 'Look! Here is the Messiah!', or, 'Look! There he is!' don't believe it, |
For false messiahs and false prophets will rise up and perform signs and wonders so as to deceive, if possible, even God’s chosen ones. | 22because false messiahs and false prophets will appear and produce signs and omens to deceive, if possible, the elect. |
Watch out! I have warned you about this ahead of time! | 23So be on your guard! I've told you everything before it happens." |
“At that time, after the anguish of those days, the sun will be darkened, the moon will give no light, | 24"But after the suffering of those days, 'The sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light, |
the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. | 25the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of heaven will be shaken loose.' |
Then everyone will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds with great power and glory. | 26Then people will see 'the Son of Man coming in clouds' with great power and glory. |
And he will send out his angels to gather his chosen ones from all over the world —from the farthest ends of the earth and heaven. | 27He'll send out his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven." |
“Now learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branches bud and its leaves begin to sprout, you know that summer is near. | 28"Now learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branches become tender and it produces leaves, you know that summer is near. |
In the same way, when you see all these things taking place, you can know that his return is very near, right at the door. | 29In the same way, when you see these things taking place, you will know that the Son of Man is near, right at the door. |
I tell you the truth, this generation will not pass from the scene before all these things take place. | 30I tell all of you with certainty, this generation will not disappear until all these things take place. |
Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear. | 31Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear." |
“However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows. | 32"No one knows when that day or hour will come —not the angels in heaven, not the Son, but only the Father. |
And since you don’t know when that time will come, be on guard! Stay alert ! | 33Be careful! Watch out! Because you don't know when the time will come. |
“The coming of the Son of Man can be illustrated by the story of a man going on a long trip. When he left home, he gave each of his slaves instructions about the work they were to do, and he told the gatekeeper to watch for his return. | 34It's like a man who went on a trip. As he left home, he put his servants in charge, each with his own work, and he ordered the doorkeeper to be alert. |
You, too, must keep watch! For you don’t know when the master of the household will return—in the evening, at midnight, before dawn, or at daybreak. | 35So keep on watching, because you don't know when the master of the house is coming—whether in the evening, at three o'clock in the morning, or at dawn. |
Don’t let him find you sleeping when he arrives without warning. | 36Otherwise, he may come suddenly and find you asleep. |
I say to you what I say to everyone: Watch for him!” | 37I'm telling you what I'm telling everyone: Be alert!" |
