New Living Translation | International Standard Version |
“Then we turned around and headed back across the wilderness toward the Red Sea, just as the LORD had instructed me, and we wandered around in the region of Mount Seir for a long time. | 1"We turned and set out for the desert on the road to the Reed Sea, just as the LORD had directed me. We traveled around Mount Seir for many days. |
“Then at last the LORD said to me, | 2Then the LORD told me, |
‘You have been wandering around in this hill country long enough; turn to the north. | 3You've walked around this mountain long enough. Turn northward |
Give these orders to the people: “You will pass through the country belonging to your relatives the Edomites, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. The Edomites will feel threatened, so be careful. | 4and command this people, "You are about to pass through the territory of your relatives, the descendants of Esau who live around Seir. They will be afraid of you so be very careful. |
Do not bother them, for I have given them all the hill country around Mount Seir as their property, and I will not give you even one square foot of their land. | 5Don't fight them, because I won't give you any part of their land, not even the size of a footprint. I have given Mount Seir to Esau as their property. |
If you need food to eat or water to drink, pay them for it. | 6You may buy food to eat and water to drink from them, paying with cash."' |
For the LORD your God has blessed you in everything you have done. He has watched your every step through this great wilderness. During these forty years, the LORD your God has been with you, and you have lacked nothing.”’ | 7Indeed, the LORD your God blessed all the works of your hands. He knows about your travels through this vast desert. The LORD your God was with you these past 40 years, so that you didn't lack anything. |
“So we bypassed the territory of our relatives, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. We avoided the road through the Arabah Valley that comes up from Elath and Ezion-geber. “Then as we turned north along the desert route through Moab, | 8So we bypassed our relatives, the descendants of Esau who live in Seir. We turned through the Arabah desert from Elath, and from Ezion-geber we traveled the desert road to Moab." |
the LORD warned us, ‘Do not bother the Moabites, the descendants of Lot, or start a war with them. I have given them Ar as their property, and I will not give you any of their land.’” | 9"Then the LORD told me, 'Don't harass Moab or provoke them to war, because I won't give you any part of their land. I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as their property. |
(A race of giants called the Emites had once lived in the area of Ar. They were as strong and numerous and tall as the Anakites, another race of giants. | 10(The Emites, a people as powerful, numerous, and tall as the Anakim, lived there before. |
Both the Emites and the Anakites are also known as the Rephaites, though the Moabites call them Emites. | 11Like the Anakim, they were thought of as Rephaim, but the Moabites called them Emites. |
In earlier times the Horites had lived in Seir, but they were driven out and displaced by the descendants of Esau, just as Israel drove out the people of Canaan when the LORD gave Israel their land.) | 12The Horites used to live in Seir before the descendants of Esau dispossessed them, exterminated them, and settled there instead, just as Israel will do in the land of its possession, which the LORD gave them.) |
Moses continued, “Then the LORD said to us, ‘Get moving. Cross the Zered Brook.’ So we crossed the brook. | 13Now get going and cross the Wadi Zered.' And so we crossed the Wadi Zered. |
“Thirty-eight years passed from the time we first left Kadesh-barnea until we finally crossed the Zered Brook! By then, all the men old enough to fight in battle had died in the wilderness, as the LORD had vowed would happen. | 14Now from the time we left Kadesh-barnea until we crossed the Wadi Zered was 38 years. All of that generation, the soldiers in the camp, were destroyed just as the LORD swore they would be. |
The LORD struck them down until they had all been eliminated from the community. | 15Indeed, the hand of the LORD was against them to root them out from the camp until they were utterly destroyed." |
“When all the men of fighting age had died, | 16"And so all the soldiers among the people died. |
the LORD said to me, | 17Then the LORD spoke to me, |
‘Today you will cross the border of Moab at Ar | 18Today, you are about to cross the border of Moab at Ar. |
and enter the land of the Ammonites, the descendants of Lot. But do not bother them or start a war with them. I have given the land of Ammon to them as their property, and I will not give you any of their land.’” | 19When you come to the Ammonites, don't harass or provoke them to war, for I won't give any part of Ammonite land to you, since I have given it to the descendants of Lot as their property. |
(That area was once considered the land of the Rephaites, who had lived there, though the Ammonites call them Zamzummites. | 20"'(Indeed, it was considered Rephaim territory, since the Rephaim used to lived there. The Ammonites called them Zamzummites, |
They were also as strong and numerous and tall as the Anakites. But the LORD destroyed them so the Ammonites could occupy their land. | 21a great people, numerous, and tall as the Anakim. But the LORD destroyed the Rephaim, so that the Ammonites dispossessed them and settled there instead. |
He had done the same for the descendants of Esau who lived in Seir, for he destroyed the Horites so they could settle there in their place. The descendants of Esau live there to this day. | 22This is what he did for the descendants of Esau who live in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites before them. So they dispossessed them and settled there in their place, where they live to this day. |
A similar thing happened when the Caphtorites from Crete invaded and destroyed the Avvites, who had lived in villages in the area of Gaza.) | 23It was the same for the Avvites who lived in villages as far as Gaza. The Caphtorites, who came from Crete, destroyed them and settled there in their place.) |
Moses continued, “Then the LORD said, ‘Now get moving! Cross the Arnon Gorge. Look, I will hand over to you Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and I will give you his land. Attack him and begin to occupy the land. | 24Get ready and set out for the Wadi Arnon. Look! I've given into your control Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, along with his land. Prepare to take possession by provoking him to war. |
Beginning today I will make people throughout the earth terrified because of you. When they hear reports about you, they will tremble with dread and fear.’” Victory over Sihon of Heshbon | 25Starting today I will begin to instill fear and terror of you on the part of every nation under heaven who hears reports about you. They'll tremble in anguish before you.'" |
Moses continued, “From the wilderness of Kedemoth I sent ambassadors to King Sihon of Heshbon with this proposal of peace: | 26"I sent messengers from the desert of Kedemoth to King Sihon of Heshbon with this message of peace: |
‘Let us travel through your land. We will stay on the main road and won’t turn off into the fields on either side. | 27Let me pass through your territory. I'll stay on the main road. I won't turn to the right or left. |
Sell us food to eat and water to drink, and we will pay for it. All we want is permission to pass through your land. | 28Sell me food for cash, so I can eat and give me water for cash, so I can drink. Just let me pass through on foot, |
The descendants of Esau who live in Seir allowed us to go through their country, and so did the Moabites, who live in Ar. Let us pass through until we cross the Jordan into the land the LORD our God is giving us.’ | 29as the descendants of Esau who live in Seir did for me, as did the Moabites who live in Ar. I'll pass through, until I will have crossed the Jordan into the land that the LORD our God is about to give us.' |
“But King Sihon of Heshbon refused to allow us to pass through, because the LORD your God made Sihon stubborn and defiant so he could help you defeat him, as he has now done. | 30But King Sihon of Heshbon did not allow us to pass through, because the LORD your God had hardened his spirit and made him arrogant, in order to deliver him into your control today. |
“Then the LORD said to me, ‘Look, I have begun to hand King Sihon and his land over to you. Begin now to conquer and occupy his land.’ | 31"Then the LORD told me, 'See, I've begun to deliver Sihon and his territory over to you. Prepare to take possession of his land.' |
“Then King Sihon declared war on us and mobilized his forces at Jahaz. | 32"Sihon came out to meet us, including his entire army, at the battle of Jahaz. |
But the LORD our God handed him over to us, and we crushed him, his sons, and all his people. | 33The LORD our God delivered him to us, so we attacked him, his son, and his whole army. |
We conquered all his towns and completely destroyed everyone—men, women, and children. Not a single person was spared. | 34We captured all his towns at that time. We utterly destroyed every town—the men, the women, and the children—leaving no survivors. |
We took all the livestock as plunder for ourselves, along with anything of value from the towns we ransacked. | 35We only appropriated the livestock for our use, along with plunder from the cities that we captured. |
“The LORD our God also helped us conquer Aroer on the edge of the Arnon Gorge, and the town in the gorge, and the whole area as far as Gilead. No town had walls too strong for us. | 36From Aroer on the edge of Arnon Valley and from the town all the way to Gilead, there was no city that was too strong for us—the LORD our God delivered them all to us. |
However, we avoided the land of the Ammonites all along the Jabbok River and the towns in the hill country—all the places the LORD our God had commanded us to leave alone. | 37You did not encroach onto Ammonite land, the banks of the Wadi Jabbok, the towns in the hill country, and all the other places that were forbidden by the LORD our God." |
