| 1Then He began to speak to them in parables: “A man planted a vineyard and set a hedge around it, dug a place for the wine vat and built a tower. And he leased it to vinedressers and went into a far country. | 1Then he began to speak to them in parables: "A man planted a vineyard. He put a fence around it, dug a pit for its winepress, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to tenant farmers and went on a journey. |
| 2Now at vintage-time he sent a servant to the vinedressers, that he might receive some of the fruit of the vineyard from the vinedressers. | 2At harvest time he sent a slave to the tenants to collect from them his portion of the crop. |

| 12And they sought to lay hands on Him, but feared the multitude, for they knew He had spoken the parable against them. | 14When they had come, they said to Him, “Teacher, we know that You are true, and care about no one; for You do not regard the person of men, but teach the way of God in truth. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not? | 14When they came they said to him, "Teacher, we know that you are truthful and do not court anyone's favor, because you show no partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Should we pay or shouldn't we?" |

| 38Then He said to them in His teaching, “Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, love greetings in the marketplaces, | 38In his teaching Jesus also said, "Watch out for the experts in the law. | 39the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts, | 39and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. |
| 40who devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.” | 40They devour widows' property, and as a show make long prayers. These men will receive a more severe punishment." |
| 41Now Jesus sat opposite the treasury and saw how the people put money into the treasury. And many who were rich put in much. | 41Then he sat down opposite the offering box, and watched the crowd putting coins into it. Many rich people were throwing in large amounts. |
| 42Then one poor widow came and threw in two mites, which make a quadrans. | 42And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, worth less than a penny. |
| 43So He called His disciples to Himself and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury; | 43He called his disciples and said to them, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the offering box than all the others. |
