Now it came to pass, when Isaac was old and his eyes were so dim that he could not see, that he called Esau his older son and said to him, “My son.” And he answered him, “Here I am.”1When Isaac was old and his eyes were so weak that he was almost blind, he called his older son Esau and said to him, "My son!" "Here I am!" Esau replied.
Then he said, “Behold now, I am old. I do not know the day of my death.2Isaac said, "Since I am so old, I could die at any time.
Now therefore, please take your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field and hunt game for me.3Therefore, take your weapons--your quiver and your bow--and go out into the open fields and hunt down some wild game for me.
And make me savory food, such as I love, and bring it to me that I may eat, that my soul may bless you before I die.”4Then prepare for me some tasty food, the kind I love, and bring it to me. Then I will eat it so that I may bless you before I die."
Now Rebekah was listening when Isaac spoke to Esau his son. And Esau went to the field to hunt game and to bring it.5Now Rebekah had been listening while Isaac spoke to his son Esau. When Esau went out to the open fields to hunt down some wild game and bring it back,
So Rebekah spoke to Jacob her son, saying, “Indeed I heard your father speak to Esau your brother, saying,6Rebekah said to her son Jacob, "Look, I overheard your father tell your brother Esau,
‘Bring me game and make savory food for me, that I may eat it and bless you in the presence of the LORD before my death.’7Bring me some wild game and prepare for me some tasty food. Then I will eat it and bless you in the presence of the LORD before I die.'
Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to what I command you.8Now then, my son, do exactly what I tell you!
Go now to the flock and bring me from there two choice kids of the goats, and I will make savory food from them for your father, such as he loves.9Go to the flock and get me two of the best young goats. I'll prepare them in a tasty way for your father, just the way he loves them.
Then you shall take it to your father, that he may eat it, and that he may bless you before his death.”10Then you will take it to your father. Thus he will eat it and bless you before he dies."
And Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, “Look, Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth-skinned man.11"But Esau my brother is a hairy man," Jacob protested to his mother Rebekah, "and I have smooth skin!
Perhaps my father will feel me, and I shall seem to be a deceiver to him; and I shall bring a curse on myself and not a blessing.”12My father may touch me! Then he'll think I'm mocking him and I'll bring a curse on myself instead of a blessing."
But his mother said to him, “Let your curse be on me, my son; only obey my voice, and go, get them for me.”13So his mother told him, "Any curse against you will fall on me, my son! Just obey me! Go and get them for me!"
And he went and got them and brought them to his mother, and his mother made savory food, such as his father loved.14So he went and got the goats and brought them to his mother. She prepared some tasty food, just the way his father loved it.
Then Rebekah took the choice clothes of her elder son Esau, which were with her in the house, and put them on Jacob her younger son.15Then Rebekah took her older son Esau's best clothes, which she had with her in the house, and put them on her younger son Jacob.
And she put the skins of the kids of the goats on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck.16She put the skins of the young goats on his hands and the smooth part of his neck.
Then she gave the savory food and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob.17Then she handed the tasty food and the bread she had made to her son Jacob.
So he went to his father and said, “My father.” And he said, “Here I am. Who are you, my son?”18He went to his father and said, "My father!" Isaac replied, "Here I am. Which are you, my son?"
Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn; I have done just as you told me; please arise, sit and eat of my game, that your soul may bless me.”19Jacob said to his father, "I am Esau, your firstborn. I've done as you told me. Now sit up and eat some of my wild game so that you can bless me."
But Isaac said to his son, “How is it that you have found it so quickly, my son?” And he said, “Because the LORD your God brought it to me.”20But Isaac asked his son, "How in the world did you find it so quickly, my son?" "Because the LORD your God brought it to me," he replied.
Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come near, that I may feel you, my son, whether you are really my son Esau or not.”21Then Isaac said to Jacob, "Come closer so I can touch you, my son, and know for certain if you really are my son Esau."
So Jacob went near to Isaac his father, and he felt him and said, “The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.”22So Jacob went over to his father Isaac, who felt him and said, "The voice is Jacob's, but the hands are Esau's."
And he did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like his brother Esau’s hands; so he blessed him.23He did not recognize him because his hands were hairy, like his brother Esau's hands. So Isaac blessed Jacob.
Then he said, “Are you really my son Esau?” He said, “I am.24Then he asked, "Are you really my son Esau?" "I am," Jacob replied.
He said, “Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son’s game, so that my soul may bless you.” So he brought it near to him, and he ate; and he brought him wine, and he drank.25Isaac said, "Bring some of the wild game for me to eat, my son. Then I will bless you." So Jacob brought it to him, and he ate it. He also brought him wine, and Isaac drank.
Then his father Isaac said to him, “Come near now and kiss me, my son.”26Then his father Isaac said to him, "Come here and kiss me, my son."
And he came near and kissed him; and he smelled the smell of his clothing, and blessed him and said: “Surely, the smell of my son Is like the smell of a field Which the LORD has blessed.27So Jacob went over and kissed him. When Isaac caught the scent of his clothing, he blessed him, saying, "Yes, my son smells like the scent of an open field which the LORD has blessed.
Therefore may God give you Of the dew of heaven, Of the fatness of the earth, And plenty of grain and wine.28May God give you the dew of the sky and the richness of the earth, and plenty of grain and new wine.
Let peoples serve you, And nations bow down to you. Be master over your brethren, And let your mother’s sons bow down to you. Cursed be everyone who curses you, And blessed be those who bless you!”29May peoples serve you and nations bow down to you. You will be lord over your brothers, and the sons of your mother will bow down to you. May those who curse you be cursed, and those who bless you be blessed."
Now it happened, as soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, and Jacob had scarcely gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, that Esau his brother came in from his hunting.30Isaac had just finished blessing Jacob, and Jacob had scarcely left his father's presence, when his brother Esau returned from the hunt.
He also had made savory food, and brought it to his father, and said to his father, “Let my father arise and eat of his son’s game, that your soul may bless me.”31He also prepared some tasty food and brought it to his father. Esau said to him, "My father, get up and eat some of your son's wild game. Then you can bless me."
And his father Isaac said to him, “Who are you?” So he said, “I am your son, your firstborn, Esau.”32His father Isaac asked, "Who are you?" "I am your firstborn son," he replied, "Esau!"
Then Isaac trembled exceedingly, and said, “Who? Where is the one who hunted game and brought it to me? I ate all of it before you came, and I have blessed him—and indeed he shall be blessed.”33Isaac began to shake violently and asked, "Then who else hunted game and brought it to me? I ate all of it just before you arrived, and I blessed him. He will indeed be blessed!"
When Esau heard the words of his father, he cried with an exceedingly great and bitter cry, and said to his father, “Bless me—me also, O my father!”34When Esau heard his father's words, he wailed loudly and bitterly. He said to his father, "Bless me too, my father!"
But he said, “Your brother came with deceit and has taken away your blessing.”35But Isaac replied, "Your brother came in here deceitfully and took away your blessing."
And Esau said, “Is he not rightly named Jacob? For he has supplanted me these two times. He took away my birthright, and now look, he has taken away my blessing!” And he said, “Have you not reserved a blessing for me?”36Esau exclaimed, "'Jacob' is the right name for him! He has tripped me up two times! He took away my birthright, and now, look, he has taken away my blessing!" Then he asked, "Have you not kept back a blessing for me?"
Then Isaac answered and said to Esau, “Indeed I have made him your master, and all his brethren I have given to him as servants; with grain and wine I have sustained him. What shall I do now for you, my son?”37Isaac replied to Esau, "Look! I have made him lord over you. I have made all his relatives his servants and provided him with grain and new wine. What is left that I can do for you, my son?"
And Esau said to his father, “Have you only one blessing, my father? Bless me—me also, O my father!” And Esau lifted up his voice and wept.38Esau said to his father, "Do you have only that one blessing, my father? Bless me too!" Then Esau wept loudly.
Then Isaac his father answered and said to him: “Behold, your dwelling shall be of the fatness of the earth, And of the dew of heaven from above.39So his father Isaac said to him, "Indeed, your home will be away from the richness of the earth, and away from the dew of the sky above.
By your sword you shall live, And you shall serve your brother; And it shall come to pass, when you become restless, That you shall break his yoke from your neck.”40You will live by your sword but you will serve your brother. When you grow restless, you will tear off his yoke from your neck."
So Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him, and Esau said in his heart, “The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then I will kill my brother Jacob.”41So Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing his father had given to his brother. Esau said privately, "The time of mourning for my father is near; then I will kill my brother Jacob!"
And the words of Esau her older son were told to Rebekah. So she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said to him, “Surely your brother Esau comforts himself concerning you by intending to kill you.42When Rebekah heard what her older son Esau had said, she quickly summoned her younger son Jacob and told him, "Look, your brother Esau is planning to get revenge by killing you.
Now therefore, my son, obey my voice: arise, flee to my brother Laban in Haran.43Now then, my son, do what I say. Run away immediately to my brother Laban in Haran.
And stay with him a few days, until your brother’s fury turns away,44Live with him for a little while until your brother's rage subsides.
until your brother’s anger turns away from you, and he forgets what you have done to him; then I will send and bring you from there. Why should I be bereaved also of you both in one day?”45Stay there until your brother's anger against you subsides and he forgets what you did to him. Then I'll send someone to bring you back from there. Why should I lose both of you in one day?"
And Rebekah said to Isaac, “I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth; if Jacob takes a wife of the daughters of Heth, like these who are the daughters of the land, what good will my life be to me?”46Then Rebekah said to Isaac, "I am deeply depressed because of these daughters of Heth. If Jacob were to marry one of these daughters of Heth who live in this land, I would want to die!"
