Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices.1Now there were some present on that occasion who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices.
Jesus answered, "Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way?2He answered them, "Do you think these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered these things?
I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.3No, I tell you! But unless you repent, you will all perish as well!
Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them--do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem?4Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower in Siloam fell on them, do you think they were worse offenders than all the others who live in Jerusalem?
I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish."5No, I tell you! But unless you repent you will all perish as well!"
Then he told this parable: "A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it but did not find any.6Then Jesus told this parable: "A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came looking for fruit on it and found none.
So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, 'For three years now I've been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven't found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?'7So he said to the worker who tended the vineyard, 'For three years now, I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and each time I inspect it I find none. Cut it down! Why should it continue to deplete the soil?'
"'Sir,' the man replied, 'leave it alone for one more year, and I'll dig around it and fertilize it.8But the worker answered him, 'Sir, leave it alone this year too, until I dig around it and put fertilizer on it.
If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.'"9Then if it bears fruit next year, very well, but if not, you can cut it down.'"
On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues,10Now he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath,
and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all.11and a woman was there who had been disabled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten herself up completely.
When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, "Woman, you are set free from your infirmity."12When Jesus saw her, he called her to him and said, "Woman, you are freed from your infirmity."
Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God.13Then he placed his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God.
Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, the synagogue leader said to the people, "There are six days for work. So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath."14But the president of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, said to the crowd, "There are six days on which work should be done! So come and be healed on those days, and not on the Sabbath day."
The Lord answered him, "You hypocrites! Doesn't each of you on the Sabbath untie your ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water?15Then the Lord answered him, "You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from its stall, and lead it to water?
Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?"16Then shouldn't this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen long years, be released from this imprisonment on the Sabbath day?"
When he said this, all his opponents were humiliated, but the people were delighted with all the wonderful things he was doing.17When he said this all his adversaries were humiliated, but the entire crowd was rejoicing at all the wonderful things he was doing.
Then Jesus asked, "What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it to?18Thus Jesus asked, "What is the kingdom of God like? To what should I compare it?
It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds perched in its branches."19It is like a mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the wild birds nested in its branches."
Again he asked, "What shall I compare the kingdom of God to?20Again he said, "To what should I compare the kingdom of God?
It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds of flour until it worked all through the dough."21It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed with three measures of flour until all the dough had risen."
Then Jesus went through the towns and villages, teaching as he made his way to Jerusalem.22Then Jesus traveled throughout towns and villages, teaching and making his way toward Jerusalem.
Someone asked him, "Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?" He said to them,23Someone asked him, "Lord, will only a few be saved?" So he said to them,
"Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to.24"Exert every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to.
Once the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside knocking and pleading, 'Sir, open the door for us.' "But he will answer, 'I don't know you or where you come from.'25Once the head of the house gets up and shuts the door, then you will stand outside and start to knock on the door and beg him, 'Lord, let us in!' But he will answer you, 'I don't know where you come from.'
"Then you will say, 'We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.'26Then you will begin to say, 'We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.'
"But he will reply, 'I don't know you or where you come from. Away from me, all you evildoers!'27But he will reply, 'I don't know where you come from! Go away from me, all you evildoers!'
"There will be weeping there, and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves thrown out.28There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God but you yourselves thrown out.
People will come from east and west and north and south, and will take their places at the feast in the kingdom of God.29Then people will come from east and west, and from north and south, and take their places at the banquet table in the kingdom of God.
Indeed there are those who are last who will be first, and first who will be last."30But indeed, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last."
At that time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said to him, "Leave this place and go somewhere else. Herod wants to kill you."31At that time, some Pharisees came up and said to Jesus, "Get away from here, because Herod wants to kill you."
He replied, "Go tell that fox, 'I will keep on driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.'32But he said to them, "Go and tell that fox, 'Look, I am casting out demons and performing healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will complete my work.
In any case, I must press on today and tomorrow and the next day--for surely no prophet can die outside Jerusalem!33Nevertheless I must go on my way today and tomorrow and the next day, because it is impossible that a prophet should be killed outside Jerusalem.'
"Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.34O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How often I have longed to gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you would have none of it!
Look, your house is left to you desolate. I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.'"35Look, your house is forsaken! And I tell you, you will not see me until you say, 'Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!'"
