For the music director; according to the tune "Morning Doe;" a psalm of David. My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? I groan in prayer, but help seems far away. | 1For the director of music. To the tune of "The Doe of the Morning." A psalm of David. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish? |
My God, I cry out during the day, but you do not answer, and during the night my prayers do not let up. | 2My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, but I find no rest. |
You are holy; you sit as king receiving the praises of Israel. | 3Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One; you are the one Israel praises. |
In you our ancestors trusted; they trusted in you and you rescued them. | 4In you our ancestors put their trust; they trusted and you delivered them. |
To you they cried out, and they were saved; in you they trusted and they were not disappointed. | 5To you they cried out and were saved; in you they trusted and were not put to shame. |
But I am a worm, not a man; people insult me and despise me. | 6But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by everyone, despised by the people. |
All who see me taunt me; they mock me and shake their heads. | 7All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads. |
They say, "Commit yourself to the LORD! Let the LORD rescue him! Let the LORD deliver him, for he delights in him." | 8"He trusts in the LORD," they say, "let the LORD rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him." |
Yes, you are the one who brought me out from the womb and made me feel secure on my mother's breasts. | 9Yet you brought me out of the womb; you made me trust in you, even at my mother's breast. |
I have been dependent on you since birth; from the time I came out of my mother's womb you have been my God. | 10From birth I was cast on you; from my mother's womb you have been my God. |
Do not remain far away from me, for trouble is near and I have no one to help me. | 11Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to help. |
Many bulls surround me; powerful bulls of Bashan hem me in. | 12Many bulls surround me; strong bulls of Bashan encircle me. |
They open their mouths to devour me like a roaring lion that rips its prey. | 13Roaring lions that tear their prey open their mouths wide against me. |
My strength drains away like water; all my bones are dislocated; my heart is like wax; it melts away inside me. | 14I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted within me. |
The roof of my mouth is as dry as a piece of pottery; my tongue sticks to my gums. You set me in the dust of death. | 15My mouth is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death. |
Yes, wild dogs surround me--a gang of evil men crowd around me; like a lion they pin my hands and feet. | 16Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce my hands and my feet. |
I can count all my bones; my enemies are gloating over me in triumph. | 17All my bones are on display; people stare and gloat over me. |
They are dividing up my clothes among themselves; they are rolling dice for my garments. | 18They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment. |
But you, O LORD, do not remain far away! You are my source of strength! Hurry and help me! | 19But you, LORD, do not be far from me. You are my strength; come quickly to help me. |
Deliver me from the sword! Save my life from the claws of the wild dogs! | 20Deliver me from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dogs. |
Rescue me from the mouth of the lion, and from the horns of the wild oxen! You have answered me! | 21Rescue me from the mouth of the lions; save me from the horns of the wild oxen. |
I will declare your name to my countrymen! In the middle of the assembly I will praise you! | 22I will declare your name to my people; in the assembly I will praise you. |
You loyal followers of the LORD, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob, honor him! All you descendants of Israel, stand in awe of him! | 23You who fear the LORD, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob, honor him! Revere him, all you descendants of Israel! |
For he did not despise or detest the suffering of the oppressed; he did not ignore him; when he cried out to him, he responded. | 24For he has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help. |
You are the reason I offer praise in the great assembly; I will fulfill my promises before the LORD's loyal followers. | 25From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly; before those who fear you I will fulfill my vows. |
Let the oppressed eat and be filled! Let those who seek his help praise the LORD! May you live forever! | 26The poor will eat and be satisfied; those who seek the LORD will praise him-- may your hearts live forever! |
Let all the people of the earth acknowledge the LORD and turn to him! Let all the nations worship you! | 27All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations will bow down before him, |
For the LORD is king and rules over the nations. | 28for dominion belongs to the LORD and he rules over the nations. |
All of the thriving people of the earth will join the celebration and worship; all those who are descending into the grave will bow before him, including those who cannot preserve their lives. | 29All the rich of the earth will feast and worship; all who go down to the dust will kneel before him-- those who cannot keep themselves alive. |
A whole generation will serve him; they will tell the next generation about the sovereign Lord. | 30Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord. |
They will come and tell about his saving deeds; they will tell a future generation what he has accomplished. | 31They will proclaim his righteousness, declaring to a people yet unborn: He has done it! |
