NET Bible | English Standard Version |
Then we turned and set out toward the desert land on the way to the Red Sea just as the LORD told me to do, detouring around Mount Seir for a long time. | 1“Then we turned and journeyed into the wilderness in the direction of the Red Sea, as the LORD told me. And for many days we traveled around Mount Seir. |
At this point the LORD said to me, | 2Then the LORD said to me, |
"You have circled around this mountain long enough; now turn north. | 3‘You have been traveling around this mountain country long enough. Turn northward |
Instruct these people as follows: 'You are about to cross the border of your relatives the descendants of Esau, who inhabit Seir. They will be afraid of you, so watch yourselves carefully. | 4and command the people, “You are about to pass through the territory of your brothers, the people of Esau, who live in Seir; and they will be afraid of you. So be very careful. |
Do not be hostile toward them, because I am not giving you any of their land, not even a footprint, for I have given Mount Seir as an inheritance for Esau. | 5Do not contend with them, for I will not give you any of their land, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot to tread on, because I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession. |
You may purchase food to eat and water to drink from them. | 6You shall purchase food from them with money, that you may eat, and you shall also buy water from them with money, that you may drink. |
All along the way I, the LORD your God, have blessed your every effort. I have been attentive to your travels through this great wasteland. These forty years I have been with you; you have lacked for nothing.'" | 7For the LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He knows your going through this great wilderness. These forty years the LORD your God has been with you. You have lacked nothing.”’ |
So we turned away from our relatives the descendants of Esau, the inhabitants of Seir, turning from the desert route, from Elat and Ezion Geber, and traveling the way of the Moab wastelands. | 8So we went on, away from our brothers, the people of Esau, who live in Seir, away from the Arabah road from Elath and Ezion-geber. “And we turned and went in the direction of the wilderness of Moab. |
Then the LORD said to me, "Do not harass Moab and provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of their land as your territory. This is because I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as their possession. | 9And the LORD said to me, ‘Do not harass Moab or contend with them in battle, for I will not give you any of their land for a possession, because I have given Ar to the people of Lot for a possession.’ |
(The Emites used to live there, a people as powerful, numerous, and tall as the Anakites. | 10(The Emim formerly lived there, a people great and many, and tall as the Anakim. |
These people, as well as the Anakites, are also considered Rephaites; the Moabites call them Emites. | 11Like the Anakim they are also counted as Rephaim, but the Moabites call them Emim. |
Previously the Horites lived in Seir but the descendants of Esau dispossessed and destroyed them and settled in their place, just as Israel did to the land it came to possess, the land the LORD gave them.) | 12The Horites also lived in Seir formerly, but the people of Esau dispossessed them and destroyed them from before them and settled in their place, as Israel did to the land of their possession, which the LORD gave to them.) |
Now, get up and cross the Wadi Zered." So we did so. | 13‘Now rise up and go over the brook Zered.’ So we went over the brook Zered. |
Now the length of time it took for us to go from Kadesh Barnea to the crossing of Wadi Zered was thirty-eight years, time for all the military men of that generation to die, just as the LORD had vowed to them. | 14And the time from our leaving Kadesh-barnea until we crossed the brook Zered was thirty-eight years, until the entire generation, that is, the men of war, had perished from the camp, as the LORD had sworn to them. |
Indeed, it was the very hand of the LORD that eliminated them from within the camp until they were all gone. | 15For indeed the hand of the LORD was against them, to destroy them from the camp, until they had perished. |
So it was that after all the military men had been eliminated from the community, | 16“So as soon as all the men of war had perished and were dead from among the people, |
the LORD said to me, | 17the LORD said to me, |
"Today you are going to cross the border of Moab, that is, of Ar. | 18‘Today you are to cross the border of Moab at Ar. |
But when you come close to the Ammonites, do not harass or provoke them because I am not giving you any of the Ammonites' land as your possession; I have already given it to Lot's descendants as their possession. | 19And when you approach the territory of the people of Ammon, do not harass them or contend with them, for I will not give you any of the land of the people of Ammon as a possession, because I have given it to the sons of Lot for a possession.’ |
(That also is considered to be a land of the Rephaites. The Rephaites lived there originally; the Ammonites call them Zamzummites. | 20(It is also counted as a land of Rephaim. Rephaim formerly lived there—but the Ammonites call them Zamzummim— |
They are a people as powerful, numerous, and tall as the Anakites. But the LORD destroyed the Rephaites in advance of the Ammonites, so they dispossessed them and settled down in their place. | 21a people great and many, and tall as the Anakim; but the LORD destroyed them before the Ammonites, and they dispossessed them and settled in their place, |
This is exactly what he did for the descendants of Esau who lived in Seir when he destroyed the Horites before them so that they could dispossess them and settle in their area to this very day. | 22as he did for the people of Esau, who live in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites before them and they dispossessed them and settled in their place even to this day. |
As for the Avvites who lived in settlements as far west as Gaza, Caphtorites who came from Crete destroyed them and settled down in their place.) | 23As for the Avvim, who lived in villages as far as Gaza, the Caphtorim, who came from Caphtor, destroyed them and settled in their place.) |
Get up, make your way across Wadi Arnon. Look! I have already delivered over to you Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land. Go ahead! Take it! Engage him in war! | 24‘Rise up, set out on your journey and go over the Valley of the Arnon. Behold, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land. Begin to take possession, and contend with him in battle. |
This very day I will begin to fill all the people of the earth with dread and to terrify them when they hear about you. They will shiver and shake in anticipation of your approach." | 25This day I will begin to put the dread and fear of you on the peoples who are under the whole heaven, who shall hear the report of you and shall tremble and be in anguish because of you.’ |
Then I sent messengers from the Kedemoth Desert to King Sihon of Heshbon with an offer of peace: | 26“So I sent messengers from the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon the king of Heshbon, with words of peace, saying, |
"Let me pass through your land; I will keep strictly to the roadway. I will not turn aside to the right or the left. | 27‘Let me pass through your land. I will go only by the road; I will turn aside neither to the right nor to the left. |
Sell me food for cash so that I can eat and sell me water to drink. Just allow me to go through on foot, | 28You shall sell me food for money, that I may eat, and give me water for money, that I may drink. Only let me pass through on foot, |
just as the descendants of Esau who live at Seir and the Moabites who live in Ar did for me, until I cross the Jordan to the land the LORD our God is giving us." | 29as the sons of Esau who live in Seir and the Moabites who live in Ar did for me, until I go over the Jordan into the land that the LORD our God is giving to us.’ |
But King Sihon of Heshbon was unwilling to allow us to pass near him because the LORD our God had made him obstinate and stubborn so that he might deliver him over to you this very day. | 30But Sihon the king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him, for the LORD your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, that he might give him into your hand, as he is this day. |
The LORD said to me, "Look! I have already begun to give over Sihon and his land to you. Start right now to take his land as your possession." | 31And the LORD said to me, ‘Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land over to you. Begin to take possession, that you may occupy his land.’ |
When Sihon and all his troops emerged to encounter us in battle at Jahaz, | 32Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Jahaz. |
the LORD our God delivered him over to us and we struck him down, along with his sons and everyone else. | 33And the LORD our God gave him over to us, and we defeated him and his sons and all his people. |
At that time we seized all his cities and put every one of them under divine judgment, including even the women and children; we left no survivors. | 34And we captured all his cities at that time and devoted to destruction every city, men, women, and children. We left no survivors. |
We kept only the livestock and plunder from the cities for ourselves. | 35Only the livestock we took as spoil for ourselves, with the plunder of the cities that we captured. |
From Aroer, which is at the edge of Wadi Arnon (it is the city in the wadi), all the way to Gilead there was not a town able to resist us--the LORD our God gave them all to us. | 36From Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and from the city that is in the valley, as far as Gilead, there was not a city too high for us. The LORD our God gave all into our hands. |
However, you did not approach the land of the Ammonites, the Wadi Jabbok, the cities of the hill country, or any place else forbidden by the LORD our God. | 37Only to the land of the sons of Ammon you did not draw near, that is, to all the banks of the river Jabbok and the cities of the hill country, whatever the LORD our God had forbidden us. |
