| 1Now after this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them in pairs ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come. | 1After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. |
| 2And He was saying to them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. | 2He told them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. |
| 3"Go; behold, I send you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. | 3Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. |
| 4"Carry no money belt, no bag, no shoes; and greet no one on the way. | 4Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road. |
| 5"Whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace be to this house.' | 5"When you enter a house, first say, 'Peace to this house.' |
| 6"If a man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. | 6If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you. |
| 7"Stay in that house, eating and drinking what they give you; for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not keep moving from house to house. | 7Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house. |
| 8"Whatever city you enter and they receive you, eat what is set before you; | 8"When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is offered to you. |
| 9and heal those in it who are sick, and say to them, 'The kingdom of God has come near to you.' | 9Heal the sick who are there and tell them, 'The kingdom of God has come near to you.' |
| 10"But whatever city you enter and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say, | 10But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say, |
| 11Even the dust of your city which clings to our feet we wipe off in protest against you; yet be sure of this, that the kingdom of God has come near.' | 11Even the dust of your town we wipe from our feet as a warning to you. Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God has come near.' |
| 12"I say to you, it will be more tolerable in that day for Sodom than for that city. | 12I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town. |
| 13"Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles had been performed in Tyre and Sidon which occurred in you, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. | 13"Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. |
| 14"But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the judgment than for you. | 14But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you. |
| 15"And you, Capernaum, will not be exalted to heaven, will you? You will be brought down to Hades! | 15And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades. |
| 16"The one who listens to you listens to Me, and the one who rejects you rejects Me; and he who rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me." | 16"Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; but whoever rejects me rejects him who sent me." |
| 17The seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name." | 17The seventy-two returned with joy and said, "Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name." |
| 18And He said to them, "I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning. | 18He replied, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. |
| 19"Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you. | 19I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. |
| 20"Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven." | 20However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven." |
| 21At that very time He rejoiced greatly in the Holy Spirit, and said, "I praise You, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight. | 21At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do. |
| 22"All things have been handed over to Me by My Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him." | 22"All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him." |
| 23Turning to the disciples, He said privately, "Blessed are the eyes which see the things you see, | 23Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, "Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. |
| 24for I say to you, that many prophets and kings wished to see the things which you see, and did not see them, and to hear the things which you hear, and did not hear them." | 24For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it." |
| 25And a lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" | 25On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" |
| 26And He said to him, "What is written in the Law? How does it read to you?" | 26"What is written in the Law?" he replied. "How do you read it?" |
| 27And he answered, "YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND; AND YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF." | 27He answered, "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" |
| 28And He said to him, "You have answered correctly; DO THIS AND YOU WILL LIVE." | 28"You have answered correctly," Jesus replied. "Do this and you will live." |
| 29But wishing to justify himself, he said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" | 29But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" |
| 30Jesus replied and said, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, and they stripped him and beat him, and went away leaving him half dead. | 30In reply Jesus said: "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. |
| 31"And by chance a priest was going down on that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. | 31A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. |
| 32"Likewise a Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. | 32So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. |
| 33"But a Samaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him; and when he saw him, he felt compassion, | 33But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. |
| 34and came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; and he put him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn and took care of him. | 34He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. | 35"On the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, 'Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I return I will repay you.' | 35The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. 'Look after him,' he said, 'and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.' |

| 37And he said, "The one who showed mercy toward him." Then Jesus said to him, "Go and do the same." | 37The expert in the law replied, "The one who had mercy on him." Jesus told him, "Go and do likewise." |
| 38Now as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. | 38As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. |
| 39She had a sister called Mary, who was seated at the Lord's feet, listening to His word. | 39She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said. |
| 40But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, "Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me." | 40But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!" |
| 41But the Lord answered and said to her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; | 41"Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, |
| 42but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her." | 42but few things are needed--or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her." |
