Now it happened that while the crowd was pressing around Him and listening to the word of God, He was standing by the lake of Gennesaret; | 1On one occasion, while Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret with the crowd pressing in on Him to hear the word of God, |
and He saw two boats lying at the edge of the lake; but the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their nets. | 2He saw two boats at the edge of the lake. The fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. |
And He got into one of the boats, which was Simon's, and asked him to put out a little way from the land. And He sat down and began teaching the people from the boat. | 3Jesus got into the boat belonging to Simon and asked him to put out a little from shore. And sitting down, He taught the people from the boat. |
When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, "Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch." | 4When Jesus had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” |
Simon answered and said, "Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as You say and let down the nets." | 5“Master,” Simon replied, “we have worked hard all night without catching anything. But because You say so, I will let down the nets.” |
When they had done this, they enclosed a great quantity of fish, and their nets began to break; | 6When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to tear. |
so they signaled to their partners in the other boat for them to come and help them. And they came and filled both of the boats, so that they began to sink. | 7So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. |
But when Simon Peter saw that, he fell down at Jesus' feet, saying, "Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!" | 8When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees. “Go away from me, Lord,” he said, “for I am a sinful man.” |
For amazement had seized him and all his companions because of the catch of fish which they had taken; | 9For he and his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, |
and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not fear, from now on you will be catching men." | 10and so were his partners James and John, the sons of Zebedee. “Do not be afraid,” Jesus said to Simon. “From now on you will catch men.” |
When they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed Him. | 11And when they had brought their boats ashore, they left everything and followed Him. |
While He was in one of the cities, behold, there was a man covered with leprosy; and when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and implored Him, saying, "Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean." | 12While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was covered with leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he fell facedown and begged Him, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” |
And He stretched out His hand and touched him, saying, "I am willing; be cleansed." And immediately the leprosy left him. | 13Jesus reached out His hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” He said. “Be clean!” And immediately the leprosy left him. |
And He ordered him to tell no one, "But go and show yourself to the priest and make an offering for your cleansing, just as Moses commanded, as a testimony to them." | 14“Do not tell anyone,” Jesus instructed him. “But go, show yourself to the priest and present the offering Moses prescribed for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.” |
But the news about Him was spreading even farther, and large crowds were gathering to hear Him and to be healed of their sicknesses. | 15But the news about Jesus spread all the more, and great crowds came to hear Him and to be healed of their sicknesses. |
But Jesus Himself would often slip away to the wilderness and pray. | 16Yet He frequently withdrew to the wilderness to pray. |
One day He was teaching; and there were some Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting there, who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem; and the power of the Lord was present for Him to perform healing. | 17One day Jesus was teaching, and the Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there. People had come from Jerusalem and from every village of Galilee and Judea, and the power of the Lord was present for Him to heal the sick. |
And some men were carrying on a bed a man who was paralyzed; and they were trying to bring him in and to set him down in front of Him. | 18Just then some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat. They tried to bring him inside to set him before Jesus, |
But not finding any way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down through the tiles with his stretcher, into the middle of the crowd, in front of Jesus. | 19but they could not find a way through the crowd. So they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus. |
Seeing their faith, He said, "Friend, your sins are forgiven you." | 20When Jesus saw their faith, He said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.” |
The scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, "Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?" | 21But the scribes and Pharisees began thinking to themselves, “Who is this man who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” |
But Jesus, aware of their reasonings, answered and said to them, "Why are you reasoning in your hearts? | 22Knowing what they were thinking, Jesus replied, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? |
"Which is easier, to say, 'Your sins have been forgiven you,' or to say, 'Get up and walk '? | 23Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk?’ |
"But, so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,"-- He said to the paralytic-- "I say to you, get up, and pick up your stretcher and go home." | 24But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on the earth to forgive sins...” He said to the paralytic, “I tell you, get up, pick up your mat, and go home.” |
Immediately he got up before them, and picked up what he had been lying on, and went home glorifying God. | 25And immediately the man stood up before them, took what he had been lying on, and went home glorifying God. |
They were all struck with astonishment and began glorifying God; and they were filled with fear, saying, "We have seen remarkable things today." | 26Everyone was taken with amazement and glorified God. They were filled with awe and said, “We have seen remarkable things today.” |
After that He went out and noticed a tax collector named Levi sitting in the tax booth, and He said to him, "Follow Me." | 27After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the tax booth. “Follow Me,” He told him, |
And he left everything behind, and got up and began to follow Him. | 28and Levi got up, left everything, and followed Him. |
And Levi gave a big reception for Him in his house; and there was a great crowd of tax collectors and other people who were reclining at the table with them. | 29Then Levi hosted a great banquet for Jesus at his house. A large crowd of tax collectors was there, along with others who were eating with them. |
The Pharisees and their scribes began grumbling at His disciples, saying, "Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?" | 30But the Pharisees and their scribes complained to Jesus’ disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” |
And Jesus answered and said to them, "It is not those who are well who need a physician, but those who are sick. | 31Jesus answered, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. |
"I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance." | 32I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.” |
And they said to Him, "The disciples of John often fast and offer prayers, the disciples of the Pharisees also do the same, but Yours eat and drink." | 33Then they said to Him, “John’s disciples and those of the Pharisees frequently fast and pray, but Yours keep on eating and drinking.” |
And Jesus said to them, "You cannot make the attendants of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them, can you? | 34Jesus replied, “Can you make the guests of the bridegroom fast while He is with them? |
"But the days will come; and when the bridegroom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days." | 35But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.” |
And He was also telling them a parable: "No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and puts it on an old garment; otherwise he will both tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. | 36He also told them a parable: “No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and sews it on an old one. If he does, he will tear the new garment as well, and the patch from the new will not match the old. |
"And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled out, and the skins will be ruined. | 37And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins, the wine will spill, and the wineskins will be ruined. |
"But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. | 38Instead, new wine is poured into new wineskins. |
"And no one, after drinking old wine wishes for new; for he says, 'The old is good enough.'" | 39And no one after drinking old wine wants new, for he says, ‘The old is better.’ ” |
