Now before the Passover Festival, Jesus realized that his hour had come to leave this world and return to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.1Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
By supper time, the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray him. 2During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him,
Because Jesus knew that the Father had given everything into his control, that he had come from God, and that he was returning to God, 3Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God,
therefore he got up from the table, removed his outer robe, and took a towel and fastened it around his waist. 4rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist.
Then he poured some water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to dry them with the towel that was tied around his waist.5Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
Then he came to Simon Peter, who asked him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?"6He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?”
Jesus answered him, "You don't realize now what I'm doing, but later on you'll understand."7Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.”
Peter told him, "You must never wash my feet!" Jesus answered him, "Unless I wash you, you cannot be involved with me."8Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.”
Simon Peter told him, "Lord, not just my feet, but my hands and my head as well!"9Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!”
Jesus told him, "Whoever has bathed is entirely clean. He doesn't need to wash himself further, except for his feet. And you men are clean, though not all of you." 10Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.”
For he knew who was going to betray him. That's why he said, "Not all of you are clean."11For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”
When Jesus had washed their feet and put on his outer robe, he sat down again and told them, "Do you realize what I've done to you? 12When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you?
You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right because that is what I am. 13You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am.
So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you must also wash one another's feet. 14If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
I've set an example for you, so that you may do as I have done to you. 15For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.
Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, a servant isn't greater than his master, and a messenger isn't greater than the one who sent him. 16Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
If you understand these things, how blessed you are if you put them into practice! 17If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
I'm not talking about all of you. I know the ones I have chosen. But the Scripture must be fulfilled: 'The one who ate bread with me has turned against me.'18I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture will be fulfilled, ‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’
I'm telling you this now, before it happens, so that when it does happen, you may believe that I AM. 19I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he.
Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, the one who receives whomever I send receives me, and the one who receives me receives the one who sent me."20Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.”
After saying this, Jesus was deeply troubled in spirit and declared solemnly, "Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, one of you is going to betray me!" 21After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.”
The disciples began looking at one another, completely mystified about whom he was speaking. 22The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke.
One of his disciples, the one whom Jesus kept loving, had been sitting very close to him.23One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table at Jesus’ side,
So Simon Peter motioned to this man to ask Jesus about whom he was speaking. 24so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus of whom he was speaking.
Leaning forward on Jesus' chest, he asked him, "Lord, who is it?"25So that disciple, leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?”
Jesus answered, "He is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread after I have dipped it in the dish." Then he took a piece of bread, dipped it, and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.26Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.
After he had taken the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus told him, "Do quickly what you are going to do!" 27Then after he had taken the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.”
Now no one at the table knew why Jesus said this to him. 28Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him.
Some thought that, since Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him to buy what they needed for the festival or to give something to the destitute. 29Some thought that, because Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor.
So Judas took the piece of bread, immediately went outside…and it was night.30So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. And it was night.
After Judas had gone out, Jesus said, "The Son of Man is now glorified, and God has been glorified by him. 31When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him.
If God has been glorified by him, God himself also will glorify the Son of Man, and he will do so quickly. 32If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once.
Little children, I'm with you only a little longer. You will look for me, but what I told the Jewish leaders I now tell you, 'Where I'm going, you cannot come.' 33Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’
I'm giving you a new commandment…to love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. 34A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.
This is how everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."35By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Simon Peter asked him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus answered him, "I'm going where you cannot follow me now, though you will follow me later on."36Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but you will follow afterward.”
"Lord, why can't I follow you now?" Peter asked him. "I would lay down my life for you!"37Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”
Jesus answered him, "Would you lay down your life for me? I tell you emphatically, a rooster will not crow until you have denied me three times."38Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times.
