Then He began to speak to them in parables: "A man planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug out a pit for a winepress, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to tenant farmers and went away. | 1Jesus then began to speak to them in parables: "A man planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a pit for the winepress and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and moved to another place. |
At harvest time he sent a slave to the farmers to collect some of the fruit of the vineyard from the farmers. | 2At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants to collect from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. |
But they took him, beat him, and sent him away empty-handed. | 3But they seized him, beat him and sent him away empty-handed. |
Again he sent another slave to them, and they hit him on the head and treated him shamefully. | 4Then he sent another servant to them; they struck this man on the head and treated him shamefully. |
Then he sent another, and they killed that one. He also sent many others; they beat some and they killed some. | 5He sent still another, and that one they killed. He sent many others; some of them they beat, others they killed. |
"He still had one to send, a beloved son. Finally he sent him to them, saying, They will respect my son.' | 6"He had one left to send, a son, whom he loved. He sent him last of all, saying, 'They will respect my son.' |
"But those tenant farmers said among themselves, This is the heir. Come, let's kill him, and the inheritance will be ours!' | 7"But the tenants said to one another, 'This is the heir. Come, let's kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.' |
So they seized him, killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard. | 8So they took him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard. |
"Therefore, what will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the farmers and give the vineyard to others. | 9"What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others. |
Haven't you read this Scripture: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. | 10Haven't you read this passage of Scripture: "'The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; |
This came from the Lord and is wonderful in our eyes?" | 11the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?" |
Because they knew He had said this parable against them, they were looking for a way to arrest Him, but they were afraid of the crowd. So they left Him and went away. | 12Then the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders looked for a way to arrest him because they knew he had spoken the parable against them. But they were afraid of the crowd; so they left him and went away. |
Then they sent some of the Pharisees and the Herodians to Him to trap Him by what He said. | 13Later they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to Jesus to catch him in his words. |
When they came, they said to Him, "Teacher, we know You are truthful and defer to no one, for You don't show partiality but teach truthfully the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not? | 14They came to him and said, "Teacher, we know that you are a man of integrity. You aren't swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are; but you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not? |
Should we pay, or should we not pay?" But knowing their hypocrisy, He said to them, "Why are you testing Me? Bring Me a denarius to look at." | 15Should we pay or shouldn't we?" But Jesus knew their hypocrisy. "Why are you trying to trap me?" he asked. "Bring me a denarius and let me look at it." |
So they brought one. "Whose image and inscription is this?" He asked them." Caesar's," they said. | 16They brought the coin, and he asked them, "Whose image is this? And whose inscription?" "Caesar's," they replied. |
Then Jesus told them, "Give back to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." And they were amazed at Him. | 17Then Jesus said to them, "Give back to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's." And they were amazed at him. |
Some Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Him and questioned Him: " | 18Then the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question. |
Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies, leaves his wife behind, and leaves no child, his brother should take the wife and produce offspring for his brother. | 19"Teacher," they said, "Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. |
There were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and dying, left no offspring. | 20Now there were seven brothers. The first one married and died without leaving any children. |
The second also took her, and he died, leaving no offspring. And the third likewise. | 21The second one married the widow, but he also died, leaving no child. It was the same with the third. |
So the seven left no offspring. Last of all, the woman died too. | 22In fact, none of the seven left any children. Last of all, the woman died too. |
In the resurrection, when they rise, whose wife will she be, since the seven had married her?" | 23At the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?" |
Jesus told them, "Are you not deceived because you don't know the Scriptures or the power of God? | 24Jesus replied, "Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God? |
For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage but are like angels in heaven. | 25When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. |
Now concerning the dead being raised--haven't you read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the burning bush, how God spoke to him: I am the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob? | 26Now about the dead rising--have you not read in the Book of Moses, in the account of the burning bush, how God said to him, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? |
He is not God of the dead but of the living. You are badly deceived." | 27He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are badly mistaken!" |
One of the scribes approached. When he heard them debating and saw that Jesus answered them well, he asked Him, "Which command is the most important of all?" | 28One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, "Of all the commandments, which is the most important?" |
"This is the most important," Jesus answered: Listen, Israel! The Lord our God, the Lord is One. | 29"The most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: 'Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. |
Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. | 30Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' |
"The second is: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other command greater than these." | 31The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these." |
Then the scribe said to Him, "You are right, Teacher! You have correctly said that He is One, and there is no one else except Him. | 32"Well said, teacher," the man replied. "You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him. |
And to love Him with all your heart, with all your understanding, and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself, is far more important than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices." | 33To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices." |
When Jesus saw that he answered intelligently, He said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." And no one dared to question Him any longer. | 34When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." And from then on no one dared ask him any more questions. |
So Jesus asked this question as He taught in the temple complex, "How can the scribes say that the Messiah is the Son of David? | 35While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, he asked, "Why do the teachers of the law say that the Messiah is the son of David? |
David himself says by the Holy Spirit: The Lord declared to my Lord, Sit at My right hand until I put Your enemies under Your feet.' | 36David himself, speaking by the Holy Spirit, declared: "'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet."' |
David himself calls Him 'Lord; how then can the Messiah be his Son?" And the large crowd was listening to Him with delight. | 37David himself calls him 'Lord.' How then can he be his son?" The large crowd listened to him with delight. |
He also said in His teaching, "Beware of the scribes, who want to go around in long robes, and who want greetings in the marketplaces, | 38As he taught, Jesus said, "Watch out for the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, |
the front seats in the synagogues, and the places of honor at banquets. | 39and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. |
They devour widows' houses and say long prayers just for show. These will receive harsher punishment." | 40They devour widows' houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely." |
Sitting across from the temple treasury, He watched how the crowd dropped money into the treasury. Many rich people were putting in large sums. | 41Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. |
And a poor widow came and dropped in two tiny coins worth very little. | 42But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents. |
Summoning His disciples, He said to them, "I assure you: This poor widow has put in more than all those giving to the temple treasury. | 43Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. |
For they all gave out of their surplus, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she possessed--all she had to live on." | 44They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything--all she had to live on." |
