Berean Study Bible | International Standard Version |
I am the man who has seen affliction under the rod of God’s wrath. | 1I am a man familiar with affliction— under the rod of God's anger. |
He has driven me away and made me walk in darkness instead of light. | 2He has led me—brought me into darkness, not into light. |
Indeed, He keeps turning His hand against me all day long. | 3He truly turned his hand against me, again and again, all day long. |
He has worn away my flesh and skin; He has shattered my bones. | 4He made my flesh and skin prematurely old; he broke my bones. |
He has besieged me and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship. | 5He laid siege against me, surrounding me with bitterness and suffering. |
He has made me dwell in darkness like those dead for ages. | 6He has forced me to live in darkness, like those who are long dead. |
He has walled me in so I cannot escape; He has weighed me down with chains. | 7He has walled me in so I cannot escape; he placed heavy chains on me. |
Even when I cry out and plead for help, He shuts out my prayer. | 8Indeed, when I cry out, calling for help, he shuts out my prayer. |
He has barred my ways with cut stones; He has made my paths crooked. | 9He impeded my way with blocks of stone, making my paths uneven. |
He is a bear lying in wait, a lion hiding in ambush. | 10He is like a bear that lies in wait for me, a lion in hiding. |
He forced me off my path and tore me to pieces; He left me without help. | 11He forced me off my path, tearing me to pieces and making me desolate. |
He bent His bow and set me as the target for His arrow. | 12He bent his bow, aiming at me with his arrow. |
He pierced my kidneys with His arrows. | 13He caused his war arrows to pierce my vital organs. |
I am a laughingstock to all my people; they mock me in song all day long. | 14I have become a laughingstock to all my people, the object of their taunts throughout the day. |
He has filled me with bitterness; He has intoxicated me with wormwood. | 15He has filled me with bitterness, making me drink wormwood. |
He has ground my teeth with gravel and trampled me in the dust. | 16He broke my teeth on gravel, covering me with dust. |
My soul has been deprived of peace; I have forgotten what prosperity is. | 17You have removed peace from my life; I have forgotten what prosperity is. |
So I say, “My strength has perished, along with my hope from the LORD.” | 18So I say, "My strength is gone as is my hope in the LORD." |
Remember my affliction and wandering, the wormwood and the gall. | 19Remember my affliction and homelessness— wormwood and gall! |
Surely my soul remembers and is humbled within me. | 20My mind keeps reflecting on it, and I become depressed. |
Yet I call this to mind, and therefore I have hope: | 21This is what comes to mind, and therefore I have hope: |
Because of the loving devotion of the LORD we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail. | 22Because of the LORD's gracious love we are not consumed, since his compassions never end. |
They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness! | 23They are new every morning— great is your faithfulness! |
“The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in Him.” | 24"The LORD is all I have," says my soul, "Therefore I will trust in him." |
The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him. | 25The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the person who searches for him. |
It is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD. | 26It is good to hope and wait patiently for the LORD's salvation. |
It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is still young. | 27It is good when a young man carries the yoke of discipline in his youth. |
Let him sit alone in silence, for God has disciplined him. | 28He is to sit apart and remain silent, because the LORD has laid it upon him. |
Let him bury his face in the dust—perhaps there is still hope. | 29Let him fall face down in the dust, so there may yet be hope. |
Let him offer his cheek to the one who would strike him; let him be filled with reproach. | 30He will endure being slapped in the face, bringing him public disgrace. |
For the Lord will not cast us off forever. | 31Indeed, the Lord will not always reject us — |
Even if He causes grief, He will show compassion according to His abundant loving devotion. | 32though he causes grief, his compassion abounds according to his gracious love. |
For He does not willingly afflict or grieve the sons of men. | 33For he does not deliberately hurt or grieve human beings. |
To crush underfoot all the prisoners of the land, | 34When any of the prisoners of the earth are crushed underfoot, |
to deny a man justice before the Most High, | 35when a person's rights are perverted in defiance of the Most High. |
to subvert a man in his lawsuit—of these the Lord does not approve. | 36When a man is thwarted in his appeal, does the Lord condone it? |
Who has spoken and it came to pass, unless the Lord has ordained it? | 37Who can command, and it happens, without the Lord having ordered it? |
Do not both adversity and good come from the mouth of the Most High? | 38Do not both good and evil things proceed from the mouth of the Most High? |
Why should any mortal man complain, in view of his sins? | 39Why should anyone living complain, any mortal, about being punished for sin? |
Let us examine and test our ways, and turn back to the LORD. | 40Let us examine our lifestyles, putting them to the test, and turn back to the LORD. |
Let us lift up our hearts and hands to God in heaven: | 41Let us lift up our hearts and our hands to God in heaven. |
“We have sinned and rebelled; You have not forgiven.” | 42As for us, we have sinned and rebelled; but you have not pardoned us. |
You have covered Yourself in anger and pursued us; You have killed without pity. | 43Clothing yourself with anger, you pursued us. You killed without pity, |
You have covered Yourself with a cloud that no prayer can pass through. | 44You covered yourself with a cloud that prayer cannot pierce. |
You have made us scum and refuse among the nations. | 45You have reduced us to scum and garbage among the nations. |
All our enemies open their mouths against us. | 46All our enemies jeer at us with gaping mouths. |
Panic and pitfall have come upon us—devastation and destruction. | 47Panic and pitfalls beset us, along with devastation and ruin. |
Streams of tears flow from my eyes over the destruction of the daughter of my people. | 48My eyes run with rivers of tears over the destruction of my cherished people. |
My eyes overflow unceasingly, without relief, | 49My tears pour down ceaselessly; I am far from relief |
until the LORD looks down from heaven and sees. | 50until the LORD bends down to see from heaven. |
My eyes bring grief to my soul because of all the daughters of my city. | 51What I see grieves my soul because of all the young women of my city. |
Without cause my enemies hunted me like a bird. | 52My enemies hunted me like a bird, viciously and without justification. |
They dropped me alive into a pit and cast stones upon me. | 53They dumped me alive into a pit, sealing me in with stone. |
The waters flowed over my head, and I thought I was going to die. | 54Water closed over my head, and I said, "I'm a dead man." |
I called on Your name, O LORD, out of the depths of the Pit. | 55I called on your name, LORD, from the depths of the Pit, |
You heard my plea: “Do not ignore my cry for relief.” | 56You heard my voice— don't close your ear to my sighs and cries. |
You drew near when I called on You; You said, “Do not be afraid.” | 57You drew near when I called out to you. You said, "Stop being afraid" |
You defend my cause, O Lord; You redeem my life. | 58Lord, you have defended my cause; you have redeemed my life. |
You have seen, O LORD, the wrong done to me; vindicate my cause! | 59LORD, you observed how I have been wronged; now make your ruling in my case. |
You have seen all their malice, all their plots against me. | 60You examined their plans for vengeance, all of their plots against me. |
O LORD, You have heard their insults, all their plots against me— | 61LORD, you listened to their insults— all their plots against me, |
the slander and murmuring of my assailants against me all day long. | 62the whisperings of my opponents, their scheming against me all day long. |
When they sit and when they rise, see how they mock me in song. | 63Watch! Whether they sit down or stand up, they mock me with their songs. |
You will pay them back what they deserve, O LORD, according to the work of their hands. | 64Pay them back, LORD, according to their actions. |
Put a veil of anguish over their hearts; may Your curse be upon them! | 65Give them an anguished heart; may your curse be upon them! |
You will pursue them in anger and exterminate them from under Your heavens, O LORD. | 66Pursue them in your anger and destroy them from under the LORD's heaven. |
