Manasseh’s Western Inheritance

1  וַיְהִ֤י (And there was) הַגּוֹרָל֙ (a lot) לְמַטֵּ֣ה (for the tribe) מְנַשֶּׁ֔ה (of Manasseh), כִּי־ (for) ה֖וּא (he was) בְּכ֣וֹר (the firstborn) יוֹסֵ֑ף (of Joseph), לְמָכִיר֩ (for Machir) בְּכ֨וֹר (the firstborn) מְנַשֶּׁ֜ה (of Manasseh) אֲבִ֣י (the father) הַגִּלְעָ֗ד (of Gilead), כִּ֣י (because) ה֤וּא (he) הָיָה֙ (was) אִ֣ישׁ (a man) מִלְחָמָ֔ה (of war), וַֽיְהִי־ (and were given) ל֖וֹ (to him) הַגִּלְעָ֥ד (Gilead) וְהַבָּשָֽׁן׃ (and Bashan). 2  וַ֠יְהִי (And there was) לִבְנֵ֨י (for the sons) מְנַשֶּׁ֥ה (of Manasseh) הַנּוֹתָרִים֮ (remaining)— לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם֒ (for their clans), לִבְנֵ֨י (for the sons) אֲבִיעֶ֜זֶר (of Abiezer), וְלִבְנֵי־ (and the sons) חֵ֗לֶק (of Helek), וְלִבְנֵ֤י (and the sons) אַשְׂרִיאֵל֙ (of Asriel), וְלִבְנֵי־ (and the sons) שֶׁ֔כֶם (of Shechem), וְלִבְנֵי־ (and the sons) חֵ֖פֶר (of Hepher), וְלִבְנֵ֣י (and the sons) שְׁמִידָ֑ע (of Shemida); אֵ֠לֶּה (these were) בְּנֵ֨י (sons) מְנַשֶּׁ֧ה (of Manasseh) בֶּן־ (son) יוֹסֵ֛ף (of Joseph), הַזְּכָרִ֖ים (the males) לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָֽם׃ (by their clans).

3  וְלִצְלָפְחָד֩ (And Zelophehad) בֶּן־ (son) חֵ֨פֶר (of Hepher), בֶּן־ (son) גִּלְעָ֜ד (of Gilead), בֶּן־ (son) מָכִ֣יר (of Machir), בֶּן־ (son) מְנַשֶּׁ֗ה (of Manasseh)) לֹא־ (not) הָ֥יוּ (had) ל֛וֹ (unto him) בָּנִ֖ים (sons), כִּ֣י (but) אִם־ (only) בָּנ֑וֹת (daughters). וְאֵ֙לֶּה֙ (And these) שְׁמ֣וֹת (are the names) בְּנֹתָ֔יו (of his daughters): מַחְלָ֣ה (Mahlah), וְנֹעָ֔ה (and Noah), חָגְלָ֥ה (Hoglah), מִלְכָּ֖ה (Milcah), וְתִרְצָֽה׃ (and Tirzah). 4  וַתִּקְרַ֡בְנָה (And they came near) לִפְנֵי֩ (before the face of) אֶלְעָזָ֨ר (Eleazar) הַכֹּהֵ֜ן (the priest), וְלִפְנֵ֣י׀ (and before) יְהוֹשֻׁ֣עַ (Joshua) בִּן־ (son) נ֗וּן (of Nun), וְלִפְנֵ֤י (and before) הַנְּשִׂיאִים֙ (the rulers), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) צִוָּ֣ה (commanded) אֶת־ (-) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses) לָֽתֶת־ (to give) לָ֥נוּ (to us) נַחֲלָ֖ה (an inheritance) בְּת֣וֹךְ (in the midst) אַחֵ֑ינוּ (of our brothers).

וַיִּתֵּ֨ן (And he gave) לָהֶ֜ם (to them) אֶל־ (according to) פִּ֤י (the commandment) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) נַֽחֲלָ֔ה (an inheritance) בְּת֖וֹךְ (in the midst) אֲחֵ֥י (of the brothers) אֲבִיהֶֽן׃ (of their father). 5  וַיִּפְּל֥וּ (And fell) חַבְלֵֽי־ (portions) מְנַשֶּׁ֖ה (to Manasseh) עֲשָׂרָ֑ה (ten), לְבַ֞ד (besides) מֵאֶ֤רֶץ (the land) הַגִּלְעָד֙ (of Gilead) וְהַבָּשָׁ֔ן (and Bashan) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (that was) מֵעֵ֥בֶר (on the other side) לַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃ (of the Jordan), 6  כִּ֚י (because) בְּנ֣וֹת (the daughters) מְנַשֶּׁ֔ה (of Manasseh) נָחֲל֥וּ (received) נַחֲלָ֖ה (an inheritance) בְּת֣וֹךְ (in the midst) בָּנָ֑יו (of his sons) וְאֶ֙רֶץ֙ (and the land) הַגִּלְעָ֔ד (of Gilead). הָיְתָ֥ה (Were) לִבְנֵֽי־ (for the sons) מְנַשֶּׁ֖ה (of Manasseh) הַנּֽוֹתָרִֽים׃ (the rest).

7  וַיְהִ֤י (And was) גְבוּל־ (the territory) מְנַשֶּׁה֙ (of Manasseh) מֵֽאָשֵׁ֔ר (from Asher) הַֽמִּכְמְתָ֔ת (to Michmethath), אֲשֶׁ֖ר (which) עַל־ (is on) פְּנֵ֣י (the face) שְׁכֶ֑ם (of Shechem), וְהָלַ֤ךְ (and went along) הַגְּבוּל֙ (the border) אֶל־ (on) הַיָּמִ֔ין (south) אֶל־ (to) יֹשְׁבֵ֖י (the dwellers) עֵ֥ין (of En-) תַּפּֽוּחַ׃ (tappuah). 8  לִמְנַשֶּׁ֕ה (To Manasseh) הָיְתָ֖ה (was) אֶ֣רֶץ (the land) תַּפּ֑וּחַ (of Tappuah), וְתַפּ֛וּחַ (and Tappuah) אֶל־ (on) גְּב֥וּל (the border) מְנַשֶּׁ֖ה (of Manasseh) לִבְנֵ֥י (was to the sons) אֶפְרָֽיִם׃ (of Ephraim). 9  וְיָרַ֣ד (And descended) הַגְּבוּל֩ (the border) נַ֨חַל (to the Brook) קָנָ֜ה (of Kanah), נֶ֣גְבָּה (southward) לַנַּ֗חַל (to the brook); עָרִ֤ים (cities are) הָאֵ֙לֶּה֙ (these) לְאֶפְרַ֔יִם (of Ephraim) בְּת֖וֹךְ (in the midst) עָרֵ֣י (of the cities) מְנַשֶּׁ֑ה (of Manasseh). וּגְב֤וּל (And the border) מְנַשֶּׁה֙ (of Manasseh) מִצְּפ֣וֹן (was on the north side) לַנַּ֔חַל (of the brook), וַיְהִ֥י (and was) תֹצְאֹתָ֖יו (its outgoing) הַיָּֽמָּה׃ (at the sea). 10  נֶ֣גְבָּה (Southward) לְאֶפְרַ֗יִם (was to Ephraim), וְצָפ֙וֹנָה֙ (and northward) לִמְנַשֶּׁ֔ה (to Manasseh), וַיְהִ֥י (and was) הַיָּ֖ם (the sea) גְּבוּל֑וֹ (its border), וּבְאָשֵׁר֙ (and in Asher) יִפְגְּע֣וּן (it met) מִצָּפ֔וֹן (on the north), וּבְיִשָּׂשכָ֖ר (and in Issachar) מִמִּזְרָֽח׃ (on the east).

11  וַיְהִ֨י (And was) לִמְנַשֶּׁ֜ה (to Manasseh) בְּיִשָּׂשכָ֣ר (in Issachar) וּבְאָשֵׁ֗ר (and in Asher) בֵּית־ (in Beth-) שְׁאָ֣ן (shean) וּ֠בְנוֹתֶיהָ (and its daughters), וְיִבְלְעָ֨ם (and Ibleam) וּבְנוֹתֶ֜יהָ (and its daughters), וְֽאֶת־ (and) יֹשְׁבֵ֧י (the dwellers) דֹ֣אר (of Dor) וּבְנוֹתֶ֗יהָ (and its daughters), וְיֹשְׁבֵ֤י (and the dwellers) עֵֽין־ (of En-) דֹּר֙ (dor) וּבְנֹתֶ֔יהָ (and its daughters), וְיֹשְׁבֵ֤י (and the dwellers) תַעְנַךְ֙ (of Taanach) וּבְנֹתֶ֔יהָ (and its daughters), וְיֹשְׁבֵ֥י (and the dwellers) מְגִדּ֖וֹ (of Megiddo) וּבְנוֹתֶ֑יהָ (and its daughters) שְׁלֹ֖שֶׁת (the third is) הַנָּֽפֶת׃ (Naphath)).

12  וְלֹ֤א (And not) יָכְלוּ֙ (could) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) מְנַשֶּׁ֔ה (of Manasseh) לְהוֹרִ֖ישׁ (occupy) אֶת־ (-) הֶֽעָרִ֣ים (the cities) הָאֵ֑לֶּה (these), וַיּ֙וֹאֶל֙ (and was determined) הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֔י (the Canaanite) לָשֶׁ֖בֶת (to dwell) בָּאָ֥רֶץ (in the land) הַזֹּֽאת׃ (this). 13  וַֽיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass), כִּ֤י (when) חָֽזְקוּ֙ (grew strong) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), וַיִּתְּנ֥וּ (that they put) אֶת־ (-) הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֖י (the Canaanite) לָמַ֑ס (to forced labor); וְהוֹרֵ֖שׁ (they did dispossess him) לֹ֥א (not) הוֹרִישֽׁוֹ׃ס (and dispossessing).

14  וַֽיְדַבְּרוּ֙ (And spoke) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יוֹסֵ֔ף (of Joseph) אֶת־ (to) יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ (Joshua), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), מַדּוּעַ֩ (Why) נָתַ֨תָּה (have you given) לִּ֜י (to me) נַחֲלָ֗ה (an inheritance) גּוֹרָ֤ל (lot) אֶחָד֙ (of one) וְחֶ֣בֶל (and portion) אֶחָ֔ד (one), וַֽאֲנִ֣י (when I am) עַם־ (a people) רָ֔ב (numerous) עַ֥ד (forasmuch as) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עַד־ (until) כֹּ֖ה (now) בֵּֽרְכַ֥נִי (has blessed us) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

15  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And answered) אֲלֵיהֶ֜ם (to them) יְהוֹשֻׁ֗עַ (Joshua) אִם־ (If) עַם־ (a people) רַ֤ב (great) אַתָּה֙ (you are), עֲלֵ֣ה (then go up) לְךָ֣ (to) הַיַּ֔עְרָה (the forest) וּבֵרֵאתָ֤ (and create) לְךָ֙ (for yourself) שָׁ֔ם (there) בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (in the land) הַפְּרִזִּ֖י (of the Perizzite) וְהָֽרְפָאִ֑ים (and the Rephaim), כִּֽי־ (since) אָ֥ץ (are too confined) לְךָ֖ (for you) הַר־ (the mountains) אֶפְרָֽיִם׃ (of Ephraim).

16  וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ (And said) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יוֹסֵ֔ף (of Joseph), לֹֽא־ (Not) יִמָּ֥צֵא (is enough) לָ֖נוּ (for us) הָהָ֑ר (the hill country), וְרֶ֣כֶב (and a chariot) בַּרְזֶ֗ל (of iron) בְּכָל־ (is with every) הַֽכְּנַעֲנִי֙ (Canaanite) הַיֹּשֵׁ֣ב (who is dwelling) בְּאֶֽרֶץ־ (in the land) הָעֵ֔מֶק (of the valley) לַֽאֲשֶׁ֤ר (who are) בְּבֵית־ (of Beth-) שְׁאָן֙ (shean) וּבְנוֹתֶ֔יהָ (and its daughters), וְלַֽאֲשֶׁ֖ר (and who are) בְּעֵ֥מֶק (of the Valley) יִזְרְעֶֽאל׃ (of Jezreel).

17  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And spoke) יְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ (Joshua) אֶל־ (to) בֵּ֣ית (the house) יוֹסֵ֔ף (of Joseph), לְאֶפְרַ֥יִם (to Ephraim) וְלִמְנַשֶּׁ֖ה (and Manasseh), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), עַם־ (A people) רַ֣ב (great) אַתָּ֗ה (you are), וְכֹ֤חַ (and power) גָּדוֹל֙ (great) לָ֔ךְ (is unto you) לֹֽא־ (not) יִהְיֶ֥ה (shall be). לְךָ֖ (Unto you) גּוֹרָ֥ל (lot) אֶחָֽד׃ (just one). 18  כִּ֣י (But) הַ֤ר (the hill country) יִֽהְיֶה־ (shall be) לָּךְ֙ (unto you) כִּֽי־ (because) יַ֣עַר (wooded) ה֔וּא (it is). וּבֵ֣רֵאת֔וֹ (And you shall cut it down) וְהָיָ֥ה (and shall be) לְךָ֖ (unto you) תֹּֽצְאֹתָ֑יו (its farthest extent), כִּֽי־ (for) תוֹרִ֣ישׁ (you shall drive out) אֶת־ (-) הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֗י (the Canaanite), כִּ֣י (though) רֶ֤כֶב (a chariot of) בַּרְזֶל֙ (iron) ל֔וֹ (is unto him), כִּ֥י (and though) חָזָ֖ק (is strong) הֽוּא׃פ (he).
