God’s Glory Exits the Temple

1  וָאֶרְאֶ֗ה (And I looked), וְהִנֵּ֤ה (and behold), אֶל־ (at) הָרָקִ֙יעַ֙ (the firmament) אֲשֶׁר֙ (that was) עַל־ (over) רֹ֣אשׁ (the head) הַכְּרֻבִ֔ים (of the cherubim) כְּאֶ֣בֶן (was like a stone), סַפִּ֔יר (of sapphire) כְּמַרְאֵ֖ה (as the appearance) דְּמ֣וּת (of the likeness) כִּסֵּ֑א (of a throne) נִרְאָ֖ה (was seen) עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ (above them). 2  וַיֹּ֜אמֶר (And He spoke) אֶל־ (to) הָאִ֣ישׁ׀ (the man) לְבֻ֣שׁ (clothed) הַבַּדִּ֗ים (in linen), וַיֹּ֡אמֶר (and He said), בֹּא֩ (Go) אֶל־ (to) בֵּינ֨וֹת (the midst) לַגַּלְגַּ֜ל (of the wheel), אֶל־ (to) תַּ֣חַת (beneath) לַכְּר֗וּב (the cherub), וּמַלֵּ֨א (and fill) חָפְנֶ֤יךָ (your hands) גַֽחֲלֵי־ (with coals) אֵשׁ֙ (of fire) מִבֵּינ֣וֹת (from between) לַכְּרֻבִ֔ים (the cherubim), וּזְרֹ֖ק (and scatter them) עַל־ (over) הָעִ֑יר (the city) וַיָּבֹ֖א (and he went in) לְעֵינָֽי׃ (before my eyes).

3  וְהַכְּרֻבִ֗ים (And the cherubim) עֹֽמְדִ֛ים (were standing) מִימִ֥ין (on the south side) לַבַּ֖יִת (of the house of God), בְּבֹא֣וֹ (at the going in); הָאִ֑ישׁ (of the man) וְהֶעָנָ֣ן (and the cloud) מָלֵ֔א (filled) אֶת־ (-) הֶחָצֵ֖ר (the court) הַפְּנִימִֽית׃ (inner). 4  וַיָּ֤רָם (And went up) כְּבוֹד־ (the glory) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) מֵעַ֣ל (from) הַכְּר֔וּב (the cherub), עַ֖ל (over) מִפְתַּ֣ן (the threshold) הַבָּ֑יִת (of the house); וַיִּמָּלֵ֤א (and was filled) הַבַּ֙יִת֙ (the house) אֶת־ (with) הֶ֣עָנָ֔ן (the cloud), וְהֶֽחָצֵר֙ (and the court) מָֽלְאָ֔ה (was filled) אֶת־ (with) נֹ֖גַהּ (the brightness) כְּב֥וֹד (of the glory) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH). 5  וְקוֹל֙ (And the voice) כַּנְפֵ֣י (of the wings) הַכְּרוּבִ֔ים (of the cherubim) נִשְׁמַ֕ע (was heard) עַד־ (as far as) הֶחָצֵ֖ר (the court), הַחִיצֹנָ֑ה (outer) כְּק֥וֹל (like the voice) אֵל־ (of El-) שַׁדַּ֖י (Shaddai) בְּדַבְּרֽוֹ׃ (in His speaking).

6  וַיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass), בְּצַוֺּתוֹ֙ (in His commanding) אֶת־ (-) הָאִ֤ישׁ (the man) לְבֻֽשׁ־ (clothed) הַבַּדִּים֙ (in linen), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), קַ֥ח (Take) אֵשׁ֙ (fire) מִבֵּינ֣וֹת (from between) לַגַּלְגַּ֔ל (the wheels), מִבֵּינ֖וֹת (from between) לַכְּרוּבִ֑ים (the cherubim); וַיָּבֹא֙ (that he went in), וַֽיַּעֲמֹ֔ד (and stood) אֵ֖צֶל (beside) הָאוֹפָֽן׃ (a wheel). 7  וַיִּשְׁלַח֩ (And sent forth) הַכְּר֨וּב (the cherub) אֶת־ (-) יָד֜וֹ (his hand) מִבֵּינ֣וֹת (from between) לַכְּרוּבִ֗ים (the cherubim) אֶל־ (to) הָאֵשׁ֙ (the fire) אֲשֶׁר֙ (that was) בֵּינ֣וֹת (between) הַכְּרֻבִ֔ים (the cherubim), וַיִּשָּׂא֙ (and he took) וַיִּתֵּ֔ן (and put it) אֶל־ (into) חָפְנֵ֖י (the hands) לְבֻ֣שׁ (of the one clothed in) הַבַּדִּ֑ים (linen), וַיִּקַּ֖ח (and he took it) וַיֵּצֵֽא׃ (and went out). 8  וַיֵּרָ֖א (And was seen) לַכְּרֻבִ֑ים (unto the cherubim) תַּבְנִית֙ (the form) יַד־ (of the hand) אָדָ֔ם (of a man) תַּ֖חַת (under) כַּנְפֵיהֶֽם׃ (their wings).

9  וָאֶרְאֶ֗ה (And I looked), וְהִנֵּ֨ה (and behold) אַרְבָּעָ֣ה (four) אוֹפַנִּים֮ (wheels) אֵ֣צֶל (beside) הַכְּרוּבִים֒ (the cherubim), אוֹפַ֣ן (a wheel) אֶחָ֗ד (one) אֵ֚צֶל (beside) הַכְּר֣וּב (the cherub), אֶחָ֔ד (one) וְאוֹפַ֣ן (and a wheel) אֶחָ֔ד (one) אֵ֖צֶל (beside) הַכְּר֣וּב (the cherub); אֶחָ֑ד (the one) וּמַרְאֵה֙ (and the appearance) הָא֣וֹפַנִּ֔ים (of the wheels) כְּעֵ֖ין (was like the eye) אֶ֥בֶן (of a stone) תַּרְשִֽׁישׁ׃ (of beryl). 10  וּמַ֨רְאֵיהֶ֔ם (And their appearance), דְּמ֥וּת (likeness), אֶחָ֖ד (was one) לְאַרְבַּעְתָּ֑ם (unto four of them) כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר (as if) יִהְיֶ֥ה (it were) הָאוֹפַ֖ן (a wheel) בְּת֥וֹךְ (in the midst) הָאוֹפָֽן׃ (of the wheel). 11  בְּלֶכְתָּ֗ם (In their going), אֶל־ (toward) אַרְבַּ֤עַת (four) רִבְעֵיהֶם֙ (directions); יֵלֵ֔כוּ (they did go) לֹ֥א (not) יִסַּ֖בּוּ (did they turn aside) בְּלֶכְתָּ֑ם (in their going), כִּ֣י (for) הַמָּק֞וֹם (the place) אֲשֶׁר־ (where) יִפְנֶ֤ה (turned) הָרֹאשׁ֙ (the head) אַחֲרָ֣יו (toward it) יֵלֵ֔כוּ (they would go) לֹ֥א (not) יִסַּ֖בּוּ (did they turn aside) בְּלֶכְתָּֽם׃ (In their going).

12  וְכָל־ (And all) בְּשָׂרָם֙ (of their body), וְגַבֵּהֶ֔ם (and their rims), וִֽידֵיהֶ֖ם (and their hands), וְכַנְפֵיהֶ֑ם (and their wings), וְהָאֽוֹפַנִּ֗ים (and the wheels were), מְלֵאִ֤ים (full) עֵינַ֙יִם֙ (of eyes) סָבִ֔יב (all around), לְאַרְבַּעְתָּ֖ם (as their four) אוֹפַנֵּיהֶֽם׃ (their wheels). 13  לָא֖וֹפַנִּ֑ים (The wheels), לָהֶ֛ם (unto them) קוֹרָ֥א (it was called) הַגַּלְגַּ֖ל (The whirring wheel) בְּאָזְנָֽי׃ (In my ears).

14  וְאַרְבָּעָ֥ה (And four) פָנִ֖ים (faces were). לְאֶחָ֑ד (Unto each one) פְּנֵ֨י (the face) הָאֶחָ֜ד (of the first) פְּנֵ֣י (was the face) הַכְּר֗וּב (of a cherub), וּפְנֵ֤י (and the face) הַשֵּׁנִי֙ (of the second) פְּנֵ֣י (was the face) אָדָ֔ם (of a man), וְהַשְּׁלִישִׁי֙ (and the third) פְּנֵ֣י (the face) אַרְיֵ֔ה (of a lion), וְהָרְבִיעִ֖י (and the fourth) פְּנֵי־ (the face) נָֽשֶׁר׃ (of an eagle).

15  וַיֵּרֹ֖מּוּ (Rose upward). הַכְּרוּבִ֑ים (The cherubim) הִ֣יא (this was) הַחַיָּ֔ה (the living creature) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) רָאִ֖יתִי (I saw) בִּֽנְהַר־ (by the River) כְּבָֽר׃ (Kebar). 16  וּבְלֶ֙כֶת֙ (And in the going of), הַכְּרוּבִ֔ים (the cherubim) יֵלְכ֥וּ (went) הָאוֹפַנִּ֖ים (the wheels) אֶצְלָ֑ם (beside them) וּבִשְׂאֵ֨ת (and in the lifting up of) הַכְּרוּבִ֜ים (the cherubim) אֶת־ (-) כַּנְפֵיהֶ֗ם (their wings) לָרוּם֙ (rose up) מֵעַ֣ל (from) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the earth), לֹא־ (and not) יִסַּ֧בּוּ (did turn) הָאוֹפַנִּ֛ים (the wheels) גַּם־ (also) הֵ֖ם (they were) מֵאֶצְלָֽם׃ (beside them). 17  בְּעָמְדָ֣ם (In their standing) יַעֲמֹ֔דוּ (they would stand), וּבְרוֹמָ֖ם (and in their rising up), יֵר֣וֹמּוּ (they were raised up) אוֹתָ֑ם (with them) כִּ֛י (for) ר֥וּחַ (the spirit) הַחַיָּ֖ה (of the living creature) בָּהֶֽם׃ (was in them).

18  וַיֵּצֵא֙ (And went out) כְּב֣וֹד (the glory) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) מֵעַ֖ל (from upon) מִפְתַּ֣ן (the threshold) הַבָּ֑יִת (of the house), וַֽיַּעֲמֹ֖ד (and it stood) עַל־ (over) הַכְּרוּבִֽים׃ (the cherubim). 19  וַיִּשְׂא֣וּ (And lifted up) הַכְּרוּבִ֣ים (the cherubim) אֶת־ (-) כַּ֠נְפֵיהֶם (their wings), וַיֵּר֨וֹמּוּ (and they were raised up) מִן־ (from) הָאָ֤רֶץ (the earth) לְעֵינַי֙ (before my eyes); בְּצֵאתָ֔ם (in their going out), וְהָאֽוֹפַנִּ֖ים (and also were the wheels) לְעֻמָּתָ֑ם (beside them) וַֽיַּעֲמֹ֗ד (and they stood) פֶּ֣תַח (at the entrance) שַׁ֤עַר (of the gate) בֵּית־ (of the house); יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) הַקַּדְמוֹנִ֔י (in the east) וּכְב֧וֹד (and the glory) אֱלֹהֵֽי־ (of the God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (of Israel) עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם (was over them) מִלְמָֽעְלָה׃ (from above).

20  הִ֣יא (This is) הַחַיָּ֗ה (the living creature) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) רָאִ֛יתִי (I saw) תַּ֥חַת (under) אֱלֹהֵֽי־ (the God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) בִּֽנְהַר־ (by the River) כְּבָ֑ר (Kebar); וָאֵדַ֕ע (and I knew that) כִּ֥י (that) כְרוּבִ֖ים (cherubim) הֵֽמָּה׃ (they were). 21  אַרְבָּעָ֨ה (Four), אַרְבָּעָ֤ה (four) פָנִים֙ (faces) לְאֶחָ֔ד (were unto each one) וְאַרְבַּ֥ע (and four) כְּנָפַ֖יִם (wings); לְאֶחָ֑ד (unto each one) וּדְמוּת֙ (and the likeness) יְדֵ֣י (of the hands) אָדָ֔ם (of a man) תַּ֖חַת (was under) כַּנְפֵיהֶֽם׃ (their wings). 22  וּדְמ֣וּת (And the likeness) פְּנֵיהֶ֔ם (of their faces) הֵ֣מָּה (they were) הַפָּנִ֗ים (the faces) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) רָאִ֙יתִי֙ (I had seen) עַל־ (by) נְהַר־ (the River) כְּבָ֔ר (Kebar), מַרְאֵיהֶ֖ם (their appearances) וְאוֹתָ֑ם (and themselves) אִ֛ישׁ (to) אֶל־ (to the direction). עֵ֥בֶר (Straight ahead) פָּנָ֖יו (of its face) יֵלֵֽכוּ׃ (they would go).
