Execution of the Idolaters 1 וַיִּקְרָ֣א (And He called out) בְאָזְנַ֗י (in my ears) ק֤וֹל (in a voice), גָּדוֹל֙ (great) לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), קָרְב֖וּ (Let come near), פְּקֻדּ֣וֹת (those appointed to deal) הָעִ֑יר (with the city) וְאִ֛ישׁ (and each man) כְּלִ֥י (with a weapon) מַשְׁחֵת֖וֹ (of destruction) בְּיָדֽוֹ׃ (in his hand). 2 וְהִנֵּ֣ה (And behold), שִׁשָּׁ֣ה (six) אֲנָשִׁ֡ים (men) בָּאִ֣ים׀ (coming) מִדֶּרֶךְ־ (from the way) שַׁ֨עַר (of the gate), הָעֶלְי֜וֹן (upper) אֲשֶׁ֣ר׀ (that) מָפְנֶ֣ה (is facing) צָפ֗וֹנָה (to the north), וְאִ֨ישׁ (and each man) כְּלִ֤י (with the weapon) מַפָּצוֹ֙ (of slaughter) בְּיָד֔וֹ (in his hand); וְאִישׁ־ (and a man) אֶחָ֤ד (one) בְּתוֹכָם֙ (in their midst) לָבֻ֣שׁ (clothed with) בַּדִּ֔ים (linen), וְקֶ֥סֶת (and the inkhorn) הַסֹּפֵ֖ר (of a scribe) בְּמָתְנָ֑יו (at his side). וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ (And they went in), וַיַּ֣עַמְד֔וּ (and stood) אֵ֖צֶל (beside) מִזְבַּ֥ח (the altar) הַנְּחֹֽשֶׁת׃ (of bronze). 3 וּכְב֣וֹד׀ (And the glory) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (of the God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel) נַעֲלָה֙ (had gone up) מֵעַ֤ל (from) הַכְּרוּב֙ (the cherub), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (where) הָיָ֣ה (it had been), עָלָ֔יו (upon it) אֶ֖ל (to) מִפְתַּ֣ן (the threshold) הַבָּ֑יִת (of the temple). וַיִּקְרָ֗א (And He called) אֶל־ (to) הָאִישׁ֙ (the man) הַלָּבֻ֣שׁ (clothed in) הַבַּדִּ֔ים (linen), אֲשֶׁ֛ר (who had) קֶ֥סֶת (the inkhorn) הַסֹּפֵ֖ר (of a scribe) בְּמָתְנָֽיו׃ס (at his side); 4 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (and said) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֵלוֹ (to him) עֲבֹר֙ (Pass over) בְּת֣וֹךְ (in the midst) הָעִ֔יר (of the city), בְּת֖וֹךְ (in the midst) יְרֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (of Jerusalem), וְהִתְוִ֨יתָ (and mark) תָּ֜ו (a mark) עַל־ (upon) מִצְח֣וֹת (the foreheads) הָאֲנָשִׁ֗ים (of the men) הַנֶּֽאֱנָחִים֙ (those sighing) וְהַנֶּ֣אֱנָקִ֔ים (and those groaning) עַ֚ל (over) כָּל־ (all) הַתּ֣וֹעֵב֔וֹת (the abominations) הַֽנַּעֲשׂ֖וֹת (that are being done) בְּתוֹכָֽהּ׃ (in its midst). 5 וּלְאֵ֙לֶּה֙ (And to these others) אָמַ֣ר (He said) בְּאָזְנַ֔י (as heard by my ears), עִבְר֥וּ (Pass over) בָעִ֛יר (in the city), אַחֲרָ֖יו (after him) וְהַכּ֑וּ (and strike); עַל (do not) תָּחֹ֥ס (let show pity) עֵינֵיכֶם (your⁺ eye) וְאַל־ (and not) תַּחְמֹֽלוּ׃ (will you⁺ have pity). 6 זָקֵ֡ן (Aged) בָּח֣וּר (and young men), וּבְתוּלָה֩ (and maidens), וְטַ֨ף (and little children), וְנָשִׁ֜ים (and women), תַּהַרְג֣וּ (you⁺ will slay) לְמַשְׁחִ֗ית (to destruction) וְעַל־ (and upon) כָּל־ (every) אִ֨ישׁ (man) אֲשֶׁר־ (who has) עָלָ֤יו (upon him) הַתָּו֙ (the mark); אַל־ (not) תִּגַּ֔שׁוּ (will you⁺ come near) וּמִמִּקְדָּשִׁ֖י (and at My sanctuary) תָּחֵ֑לּוּ (you⁺ will begin). וַיָּחֵ֙לּוּ֙ (And they began) בָּאֲנָשִׁ֣ים (with the men) הַזְּקֵנִ֔ים (elder) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (who were) לִפְנֵ֥י (before the face) הַבָּֽיִת׃ (of the house). 7 וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And He said) אֲלֵיהֶ֜ם (to them) טַמְּא֣וּ (Defile) אֶת־ (-) הַבַּ֗יִת (the house), וּמַלְא֧וּ (and fill) אֶת־ (-) הַחֲצֵר֛וֹת (the courts) חֲלָלִ֖ים (with the slain). צֵ֑אוּ (Go forth). וְיָצְא֖וּ (And they went forth), וְהִכּ֥וּ (and they struck) בָעִֽיר׃ (in the city). 8 וַֽיְהִי֙ (And it came to pass), כְּהַכּוֹתָ֔ם (in their striking) וְנֵֽאשֲׁאַ֖ר (was left), אָ֑נִי (I) וָאֶפְּלָ֨ה (and I fell) עַל־ (on) פָּנַ֜י (my face), וָאֶזְעַ֗ק (and cried out), וָֽאֹמַר֙ (and said), אֲהָהּ֙ (Ah) אֲדֹנָ֣י (Lord) יְהוִ֔ה (YHWH)! הֲמַשְׁחִ֣ית (Are going to destroy) אַתָּ֗ה (You) אֵ֚ת (-) כָּל־ (all) שְׁאֵרִ֣ית (the remnant) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) בְּשָׁפְכְּךָ֥ (in Your pouring out) אֶת־ (-) חֲמָתְךָ֖ (Your fury) עַל־ (upon) יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (Jerusalem)? 9 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And He said) אֵלַ֗י (to me) עֲוֺ֨ן (The iniquity) בֵּֽית־ (of the house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל (of Israel) וִֽיהוּדָה֙ (and Judah) גָּדוֹל֙ (is great), בִּמְאֹ֣ד (exceedingly) מְאֹ֔ד (greatly) וַתִּמָּלֵ֤א (and is full) הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ (the land) דָּמִ֔ים (of blood), וְהָעִ֖יר (and the city) מָלְאָ֣ה (is full) מֻטֶּ֑ה (of perversity); כִּ֣י (for) אָמְר֗וּ (they say), עָזַ֤ב (Has forsaken) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the land), וְאֵ֥ין (not) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) רֹאֶֽה׃ (is seeing). 10 וְגַ֨ם־ (And also), אֲנִ֔י (I) לֹא־ (not) תָח֥וֹס (will show pity), עֵינִ֖י (My eye) וְלֹ֣א (and not) אֶחְמֹ֑ל (will I have pity), דַּרְכָּ֖ם (their deeds) בְּרֹאשָׁ֥ם (on their own head) נָתָֽתִּי׃ (I have put). 11 וְהִנֵּ֞ה (And, behold), הָאִ֣ישׁ׀ (the man) לְבֻ֣שׁ (clothed in) הַבַּדִּ֗ים (linen), אֲשֶׁ֤ר (who had) הַקֶּ֙סֶת֙ (the inkhorn) בְּמָתְנָ֔יו (at his side), מֵשִׁ֥יב (was returning) דָּבָ֖ר (word), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), עָשִׂ֕יתִי (I have done) כַאֲשֶׁר (according to that which) צִוִּיתָֽנִי׃ס (You commanded me).
