Evil in High Places

1 וַתִּשָּׂ֨א (And lifted up) אֹתִ֜י (me) ר֗וּחַ (the Spirit) וַתָּבֵ֣א (and brought) אֹ֠תִי (me) אֶל־ (to) שַׁ֨עַר (the gate) בֵּית־ (of the house), יְהוָ֤ה (of YHWH) הַקַּדְמוֹנִי֙ (to the east) הַפּוֹנֶ֣ה (facing) קָדִ֔ימָה (eastward); וְהִנֵּה֙ (and behold) בְּפֶ֣תַח (at the entrance) הַשַּׁ֔עַר (of the gate) עֶשְׂרִ֥ים (were twenty) וַחֲמִשָּׁ֖ה (and five) אִ֑ישׁ (men); וָאֶרְאֶ֨ה (and I saw) בְתוֹכָ֜ם (in their midst) אֶת־ (-) יַאֲזַנְיָ֧ה (Jaazaniah) בֶן־ (son) עַזֻּ֛ר (of Azzur), וְאֶת־ (and) פְּלַטְיָ֥הוּ (Pelatiah) בֶן־ (son) בְּנָיָ֖הוּ (of Benaiah), שָׂרֵ֖י (princes) הָעָֽם׃פ (of the people). 2 וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (And He said) אֵלָ֑י (to me) בֶּן־ (Son) אָדָ֕ם (of man), אֵ֣לֶּה (these are) הָאֲנָשִׁ֞ים (the men) הַחֹשְׁבִ֥ים (devising) אָ֛וֶן (iniquity), וְהַיֹּעֲצִ֥ים (and counseling) עֲצַת־ (counsel) רָ֖ע (evil) בָּעִ֥יר (in the city), הַזֹּֽאת׃ (this). 3 הָאֹ֣מְרִ֔ים (Those saying), לֹ֥א (It is not) בְקָר֖וֹב (near); בְּנ֣וֹת (for building) בָּתִּ֑ים (houses)? הִ֣יא (She is) הַסִּ֔יר (the pot), וַאֲנַ֖חְנוּ (and we are) הַבָּשָֽׂר׃ (the meat). 4 לָכֵ֖ן (Therefore) הִנָּבֵ֣א (prophesy) עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם (against them) הִנָּבֵ֖א (prophesy), בֶּן־ (O son) אָדָֽם׃ (of man).

5 וַתִּפֹּ֣ל (And fell) עָלַי֮ (upon me) ר֣וּחַ (the Spirit) יְהוָה֒ (of YHWH) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and He said) אֵלַ֗י (to me) אֱמֹר֙ (Say); כֹּה־ (thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH); כֵּ֥ן (thus) אֲמַרְתֶּ֖ם (you⁺ have said), בֵּ֣ית (O house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), וּמַעֲל֥וֹת (and the things coming upon) רֽוּחֲכֶ֖ם (your⁺ spirit), אֲנִ֥י (I) יְדַעְתִּֽיהָ׃ (know). 6 הִרְבֵּיתֶ֥ם (You⁺ have multiplied) חַלְלֵיכֶ֖ם (your⁺ slain) בָּעִ֣יר (in the city), הַזֹּ֑את (this) וּמִלֵּאתֶ֥ם (and you⁺ have filled) חוּצֹתֶ֖יהָ (its streets) חָלָֽל׃פ (with the slain).

7 לָכֵ֗ן (Therefore) כֹּֽה־ (thus) אָמַר֮ (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִה֒ (YHWH); חַלְלֵיכֶם֙ (Your⁺ slain) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) שַׂמְתֶּ֣ם (you⁺ have set) בְּתוֹכָ֔הּ (in its midst) הֵ֥מָּה (they are) הַבָּשָׂ֖ר (the flesh), וְהִ֣יא (and she is) הַסִּ֑יר (the pot); וְאֶתְכֶ֖ם (and you⁺) הוֹצִ֥יא (will be brought out) מִתּוֹכָֽהּ׃ (from her midst). 8 חֶ֖רֶב (The sword); יְרֵאתֶ֑ם (you⁺ have feared) וְחֶ֙רֶב֙ (and the sword) אָבִ֣יא (I will bring) עֲלֵיכֶ֔ם (upon you⁺) נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֥י (of the Lord) יְהוִֽה׃ (YHWH). 9 וְהוֹצֵאתִ֤י (And I will bring out) אֶתְכֶם֙ (you⁺) מִתּוֹכָ֔הּ (from her midst) וְנָתַתִּ֥י (and I will give) אֶתְכֶ֖ם (you⁺) בְּיַד־ (into the hands) זָרִ֑ים (of strangers), וְעָשִׂ֛יתִי (and I will execute) בָכֶ֖ם (against you⁺) שְׁפָטִֽים׃ (judgments). 10 בַּחֶ֣רֶב (By the sword); תִּפֹּ֔לוּ (you⁺ will fall) עַל־ (and at) גְּב֥וּל (the border) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel); אֶשְׁפּ֣וֹט (I will judge) אֶתְכֶ֑ם (you⁺) וִֽידַעְתֶּ֖ם (and you⁺ will know) כִּֽי־ (that) אֲנִ֥י (I am) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

11 הִ֗יא (She) לֹֽא־ (not) תִהְיֶ֤ה (will be) לָכֶם֙ (for you⁺) לְסִ֔יר (a pot), וְאַתֶּ֛ם (nor you⁺) תִּהְי֥וּ (will be) בְתוֹכָ֖הּ (in her midst) לְבָשָׂ֑ר (as meat) אֶל־ (at) גְּב֥וּל (the border) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) אֶשְׁפֹּ֥ט (I will judge) אֶתְכֶֽם׃ (you⁺). 12 וִֽידַעְתֶּם֙ (And you⁺ will know) כִּֽי־ (that) אֲנִ֣י (I am) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH); אֲשֶׁ֤ר (for) בְּחֻקַּי֙ (in My statutes), לֹ֣א (not) הֲלַכְתֶּ֔ם (you⁺ have walked) וּמִשְׁפָּטַ֖י (and My ordinances), לֹ֣א (not) עֲשִׂיתֶ֑ם (have you⁺ done) וּֽכְמִשְׁפְּטֵ֧י (and according to the ordinances) הַגּוֹיִ֛ם (of the nations) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that are) סְבִיבוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם (around you⁺) עֲשִׂיתֶֽם׃ (you⁺ have done).

A Promise of Restoration
(Jeremiah 32:36–44)

13 וַֽיְהִי֙ (And it came to pass), כְּהִנָּ֣בְאִ֔י (in my prophesying), וּפְלַטְיָ֥הוּ (that Pelatiah) בֶן־ (son) בְּנָיָ֖ה (of Benaiah) מֵ֑ת (died). וָאֶפֹּ֨ל (And I fell) עַל־ (on) פָּנַ֜י (my face), וָאֶזְעַ֣ק (and cried out) קוֹל־ (in a voice), גָּד֗וֹל (great) וָאֹמַר֙ (and said), אֲהָהּ֙ (Ah) אֲדֹנָ֣י (Lord) יְהוִ֔ה (YHWH)! כָּלָה֙ (To a complete end) אַתָּ֣ה (are You) עֹשֶׂ֔ה (going to make) אֵ֖ת (of) שְׁאֵרִ֥ית (the remnant) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃פ (of Israel)?

14 וַיְהִ֥י (And came) דְבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֵלַ֥י (to me) לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 15 בֶּן־ (Son) אָדָ֗ם (of man), אַחֶ֤יךָ (your brothers) אַחֶ֙יךָ֙ (your relatives), אַנְשֵׁ֣י (the men) גְאֻלָּתֶ֔ךָ (of your kindred), וְכָל־ (and all) בֵּ֥ית (the house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) כֻּלֹּ֑ה (all of it), אֲשֶׁר֩ (are those whom) אָמְר֨וּ (have said), לָהֶ֜ם (to them) יֹשְׁבֵ֣י (the dwellers) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֗ם (of Jerusalem) רַֽחֲקוּ֙ (Get far away) מֵעַ֣ל (from) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH); לָ֥נוּ (to us) הִ֛יא (this) נִתְּנָ֥ה (has been given) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the land) לְמוֹרָשָֽׁה׃ס (as a possession).

16 לָכֵ֣ן (Therefore) אֱמֹ֗ר (say), כֹּֽה־ (thus) אָמַר֮ (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִה֒ (YHWH); כִּ֤י (Although) הִרְחַקְתִּים֙ (I have set them far away) בַּגּוֹיִ֔ם (among the nations), וְכִ֥י (and although) הֲפִֽיצוֹתִ֖ים (I have scattered them) בָּאֲרָצ֑וֹת (among the lands), וָאֱהִ֤י (and have I been) לָהֶם֙ (for them) לְמִקְדָּ֣שׁ (a sanctuary) מְעַ֔ט (for a little while) בָּאֲרָצ֖וֹת (in the lands) אֲשֶׁר־ (to which) בָּ֥אוּ (they have gone) שָֽׁם׃ס (there).

17 לָכֵ֣ן (Therefore) אֱמֹ֗ר (say), כֹּֽה־ (thus) אָמַר֮ (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִה֒ (YHWH) וְקִבַּצְתִּ֤י (And I will gather) אֶתְכֶם֙ (you⁺) מִן־ (from) הָ֣עַמִּ֔ים (the peoples), וְאָסַפְתִּ֣י (and will assemble) אֶתְכֶ֔ם (you⁺) מִן־ (from) הָ֣אֲרָצ֔וֹת (the lands) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (to which) נְפֹצוֹתֶ֖ם (you⁺ have been scattered), בָּהֶ֑ם (in them) וְנָתַתִּ֥י (and I will give) לָכֶ֖ם (to you⁺) אֶת־ (-) אַדְמַ֥ת (the land) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

18 וּבָ֖אוּ־ (And they will go) שָׁ֑מָּה (there), וְהֵסִ֜ירוּ (and they will turn aside) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) שִׁקּוּצֶ֛יהָ (her detestable things) וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) תּוֹעֲבוֹתֶ֖יהָ (her abominations) מִמֶּֽנָּה׃ (from her). 19 וְנָתַתִּ֤י (And I will give) לָהֶם֙ (to them) לֵ֣ב (a heart), אֶחָ֔ד (single) וְר֥וּחַ (and a spirit) חֲדָשָׁ֖ה (new) אֶתֵּ֣ן (I will give) בְּקִרְבְּכֶ֑ם (within them) וַהֲסִ֨רֹתִ֜י (and I will turn away) לֵ֤ב (the heart) הָאֶ֙בֶן֙ (of stone) מִבְּשָׂרָ֔ם (from their flesh), וְנָתַתִּ֥י (and I will give) לָהֶ֖ם (to them) לֵ֥ב (a heart) בָּשָֽׂר׃ (of flesh), 20 לְמַ֙עַן֙ (so that) בְּחֻקֹּתַ֣י (in My statutes), יֵלֵ֔כוּ (they may walk) וְאֶת־ (and) מִשְׁפָּטַ֥י (My ordinances), יִשְׁמְר֖וּ (they may keep) וְעָשׂ֣וּ (and may do) אֹתָ֑ם (them) וְהָיוּ־ (and they will be) לִ֣י (My) לְעָ֔ם (people), וַאֲנִ֕י (and I) אֶהְיֶ֥ה (will be) לָהֶ֖ם (their) לֵאלֹהִֽים׃ (God).

21 וְאֶל־ (And for those) לֵ֧ב (those whose heart) שִׁקּוּצֵיהֶ֛ם (their detestable) וְתוֹעֲבוֹתֵיהֶ֖ם (and their abominations), לִבָּ֣ם (whose heart) הֹלֵ֑ךְ (are going after) דַּרְכָּם֙ (their deeds) בְּרֹאשָׁ֣ם (upon their own heads), נָתַ֔תִּי (I will recompense) נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֥י (of the Lord) יְהוִֽה׃ (YHWH).

God’s Glory Leaves Jerusalem

22 וַיִּשְׂא֤וּ (Lifted up) הַכְּרוּבִים֙ (the cherubim) אֶת־ (-) כַּנְפֵיהֶ֔ם (their wings), וְהָאֽוֹפַנִּ֖ים (and the wheels) לְעֻמָּתָ֑ם (were beside them) וּכְב֧וֹד (and the glory) אֱלֹהֵֽי־ (of the God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (of Israel) עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם (was over them) מִלְמָֽעְלָה׃ (from above). 23 וַיַּ֙עַל֙ (And went up) כְּב֣וֹד (the glory) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) מֵעַ֖ל (from) תּ֣וֹךְ (the midst) הָעִ֑יר (of the city), וַֽיַּעֲמֹד֙ (and it stood) עַל־ (on) הָהָ֔ר (the mountain) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (that is) מִקֶּ֥דֶם (on the east) לָעִֽיר׃ (of the city).

24 וְר֣וּחַ (And the Spirit) נְשָׂאַ֗תְנִי (lifted me up), וַתְּבִיאֵ֤נִי (and brought me) כַשְׂדִּ֙ימָה֙ (to Chaldea), אֶל־ (to) הַגּוֹלָ֔ה (the captivity). בַּמַּרְאֶ֖ה (In a vision) בְּר֣וּחַ (by the Spirit) אֱלֹהִ֑ים (of God) וַיַּ֙עַל֙ (and went up) מֵֽעָלַ֔י (from me) הַמַּרְאֶ֖ה (the vision) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) רָאִֽיתִי׃ (I had seen). 25 וָאֲדַבֵּ֖ר (And I spoke) אֶל־ (to) הַגּוֹלָ֑ה (the captivity) אֵ֛ת (-) כָּל־ (all) דִּבְרֵ֥י (the words) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) הֶרְאָֽנִי׃פ (He had shown to me).
