Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary

12:35-40 When we attend to what the Scriptures declare, as to the person and offices of Christ, we shall be led to confess him as our Lord and God; to obey him as our exalted Redeemer. If the common people hear these things gladly, while the learned and distinguished oppose, the former are happy, and the latter to be pitied. And as sin, disguised with a show of piety, is double iniquity, so its doom will be doubly heavy.

Gill's Exposition of the Entire Bible

And the chief seats in the synagogues,.... Where the rulers of the synagogue, and the elders of the people sat; See Gill on Matthew 23:6.

And the uppermost rooms at feasts; or the first and chief places where they sat, or rather lay along at public entertainment; See Gill on Matthew 23:6.

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary

at feasts—On this love of distinction, see on [1487]Lu 14:7; [1488]Mt 6:5.

Beware of the Scribes
38And he said to them in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, which love to go in long clothing, and love salutations in the marketplaces, 39And the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost rooms at feasts: 40Which devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayers: these shall receive greater damnation.

Matthew 23:1 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples:
Matthew 23:6 they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues;
Mark 12:38 As he taught, Jesus said, "Watch out for the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted with respect in the marketplaces,
Mark 12:40 They devour widows' houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely."
