Jerusalem the Useless Vine

Then the word of the LORD

God again addressed Ezekiel with an authoritative message for the exiles in Babylon. The repeated divine communications affirm that Ezekiel’s warnings and illustrations came by God’s command.

Jer 1:4 The word of the LORD came to me, saying:
1Sa 15:10 Then the word of the LORD came to Samuel, saying,
Zec 1:1 In the eighth month of the second year of Darius,…

came to me,

Ezekiel received the message as God’s appointed prophet and was responsible to proclaim it faithfully to Israel.

Ezk 3:16 At the end of seven days the word of the LORD came…
Ezk 12:1 Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
Ezk 14:2 And the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

saying,

The Lord now introduces an illustration drawn from the vine, exposing Jerusalem’s failure to fulfill the purpose for which He had set her apart.

Exo 20:1 And God spoke all these words:
Lev 1:1 Then the LORD called to Moses and spoke to him…
Num 1:1 On the first day of the second month of the second year…

“Son of man,

God addresses Ezekiel as a mortal man appointed to speak His message to a rebellious nation.

Ezk 2:1 “Son of man,” He said to me, “stand up on your feet”…
Ezk 3:1 “Son of man,” He said to me, “eat what you find here.”…
Dan 8:17 As he came near to where I stood, I was terrified…

how does the wood of the vine surpass

Vine wood had little practical value. It was too weak and twisted for building, carving, or making useful tools.

Jhn 15:2-6 He cuts off every branch in Me that bears no fruit,…
Psa 80:8-16 You uprooted a vine from Egypt; You drove out the nations…
Isa 5:1-7 I will sing for my beloved a song of his vineyard:…

any other branch among the trees in the forest?

Israel’s privilege rested in God’s election and covenant, not in any natural strength or superiority. Like a vine, the nation existed to bear fruit for God; apart from that purpose, it had no greater usefulness than ordinary wood.

Ezk 31:3-9 Look at Assyria, a cedar in Lebanon, with beautiful…
Dan 4:10-12 In these visions of my mind, I saw this come to pass:…
Ezk 17:22-24 This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘I will take a shoot…

Can wood be taken from it to make something useful?

A vine’s value lies in its fruit, not its wood. Its branches are too weak and irregular for building or carving. Israel, pictured as a vine, had failed to produce the righteousness God required and had become useless for the purpose for which He planted her.

Psa 80:16 Your vine has been cut down and burned; they perish…
Jhn 15:5-6 I am the vine and you are the branches…
Isa 5:2 He waited for the vineyard to yield good grapes…

Or can one make from it a peg on which to hang utensils?

Vine wood was inadequate even for a small household peg. Jerusalem’s unfaithfulness had left the nation unable to serve as God’s holy people, making coming judgment certain.

Isa 22:23-25 I will drive him like a peg into a firm place,…
Exo 27:19 All the utensils of the tabernacle for every use…
Zec 10:4 The cornerstone will come from Judah, the tent peg from him…

No, it is cast into the fire for fuel.

Vine wood was unsuitable for building or making useful objects. Jerusalem, pictured as an unfruitful vine, had failed in its covenant calling through idolatry and rebellion. Like discarded vine branches, its people faced God’s judgment through the coming destruction.

Isa 27:11 When its limbs are dry, they are broken off.…
Jhn 15:6 If anyone does not remain in Me, he is like a branch…
Mat 3:10 The axe lies ready at the root of the trees,…

The fire devours both ends,

The image portrays ruin spreading across the whole vine. Babylon’s assault would bring widespread devastation to Jerusalem and Judah, leaving no secure part untouched by judgment.

Psa 80:16 Your vine has been cut down and burned; they perish…
Jer 11:16-17 The LORD once called you a flourishing olive tree…
Ezk 20:47 Say to the forest of the Negev: Hear the word…

and the middle is charred.

Even what remained between the burned ends was damaged and worthless. Jerusalem’s corruption had reached its center; its leaders, worship, and public life had been stained by unfaithfulness.

Zec 3:2 And the LORD said to Satan: “The LORD rebukes you, Satan!…
Amo 4:11 Some of you I overthrew as I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah,…
1Co 3:15 If it is burned up, he will suffer loss.…

Can it be useful for anything?

A burned vine branch cannot serve any practical purpose. So Jerusalem, having abandoned the Lord, could not escape judgment by claiming its former privilege as God’s chosen city.

Jhn 15:2 He cuts off every branch in Me that bears no fruit,…
Luk 13:7 So he said to the keeper of the vineyard…
Ezk 17:9-10 So you are to tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says:…

Even when it was whole, it could not be made useful.

Jerusalem is pictured as vine wood, valued only for producing fruit and unsuitable for building or craftsmanship. Israel had been chosen to live faithfully under God’s covenant, yet her idolatry, injustice, and rebellion showed that she had failed in that purpose.

Isa 5:1-4 I will sing for my beloved a song of his vineyard:…
Jer 2:21 I had planted you like a choice vine from the very best seed…
Jhn 15:4-5 Remain in Me, and I will remain in you…

How much less can it ever be useful when the fire has consumed it and charred it!

The fire portrays the judgment already beginning against Jerusalem. If the nation had proved fruitless before judgment, it would be even less able to fulfill its calling after the destruction brought by Babylon. The coming exile would expose the ruin caused by persistent disobedience and leave the people without excuse before God.

Ezk 19:12-14 But it was uprooted in fury, cast down to the ground,…
Psa 80:15-16 Your right hand has planted, the son You have raised up…
Jhn 15:6 If anyone does not remain in Me, he is like a branch…

Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says:

God speaks with His own authority, declaring the judgment Ezekiel is to announce to Jerusalem.

Ezk 7:2-4 “O son of man, this is what the Lord GOD says…
Ezk 13:8 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says…
Amo 3:7-8 Surely the Lord GOD does nothing without revealing His plan…

‘Like the wood of the vine among the trees of the forest,

Israel had been chosen to bear fruit for God. Vine wood had little value apart from its fruit, and Jerusalem had become like a barren vine through idolatry and rebellion.

Ezk 17:5-10 He took some of the seed of the land and planted it…
Psa 80:8-16 You uprooted a vine from Egypt; You drove out the nations…
Isa 5:1-7 I will sing for my beloved a song of his vineyard:…

which I have given to the fire for fuel,

Worthless vine wood was burned, portraying the destruction God would bring upon the city through Babylon.

Ezk 19:10-14 Your mother was like a vine in your vineyard,…
Jhn 15:6 If anyone does not remain in Me, he is like a branch…
Mal 4:1 “For behold, the day is coming, burning like a furnace,”…

so I will give up the people of Jerusalem.

Jerusalem’s inhabitants would be handed over to judgment because they had rejected the covenant and persisted in unfaithfulness.

Jer 21:10 For I have set My face against this city…
2Ch 36:17-19 So He brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans,…
Luk 21:20-24 But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies,…

And I will set My face against them.

God declares His direct and determined opposition to Jerusalem’s unfaithful inhabitants. Their judgment would not be accidental or merely the result of political events; the Lord Himself would act against them because of their persistent rebellion.

Lev 17:10 If anyone from the house of Israel or a foreigner…
Lev 20:3 And I will set My face against that man and cut…

Though they may have escaped the fire,

Some had survived earlier disasters, including Babylon’s first attacks and deportations. Their survival, however, was not evidence that they had escaped God’s judgment or secured His favor.

Jud 1:23 save others by snatching them from the fire;…
Zec 3:2 And the LORD said to Satan: “The LORD rebukes you, Satan!…

yet another fire will consume them.

Further devastation was coming through Babylon’s final destruction of Jerusalem. Having proved fruitless like the vine wood described earlier in the chapter, the rebellious people would face a judgment from which there would be no lasting escape.

Isa 47:14 Surely they are like stubble; the fire will burn them up.…
Mal 4:1 “For behold, the day is coming, burning like a furnace,”…

And when I set My face against them,

The repeated warning confirms the certainty of the coming calamity. God would personally direct judgment against those who had broken the covenant and refused to turn from idolatry and injustice.

Lev 20:5 then I will set My face against that man…
Lev 20:6 Whoever turns to mediums or spiritists…

you will know that I am the LORD.

Through the fall of Jerusalem, both the survivors and the nations would see that the God of Israel rules over His people and judges sin according to His word.

Ezk 6:7 The slain will fall among you, and you will know…
Exo 7:5 And the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD,…

Thus I will make the land desolate,

God announces the judgment that would leave Judah devastated and Jerusalem ruined. Babylon’s conquest brought the destruction of the city, the temple, and much of the land, with many survivors carried into exile. The desolation revealed the severity of Judah’s rebellion against the covenant.

Lev 26:32-35 And I will lay waste the land, so that your enemies…
Deu 29:22-28 Then the generation to come—your sons who follow you…
2Ch 36:21 So the land enjoyed its Sabbath rest all the days…

because they have acted unfaithfully,’

Israel had turned from the Lord through idolatry, injustice, and reliance on foreign powers. Their conduct was spiritual adultery, abandoning the God who had redeemed and sustained them. Judgment came after persistent refusal to heed His warnings.

Ezk 14:13 Son of man, if a land sins against Me…
2Ch 36:14-16 Furthermore, all the leaders of the priests and the people…
Jer 3:20 But as a woman may betray her husband, so you have betrayed…

declares the Lord GOD.”

The coming destruction rested on the authority of the sovereign Lord, whose decree could not fail. Though He judged His covenant people, He remained faithful to His word and purposes.

Ezk 20:33 As surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD,…
Ezk 13:8 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says…
