| 1 | לָמָ֣ה יְ֭הוָה תַּעֲמֹ֣ד בְּרָח֑וֹק תַּ֝עְלִ֗ים לְעִתּ֥וֹת בַּצָּרָֽה׃ | Why, O LORD, do you stand far away? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? | Why, LORD, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? | |
| 2 | בְּגַאֲוַ֣ת רָ֭שָׁע יִדְלַ֣ק עָנִ֑י יִתָּפְשׂ֓וּ ׀ בִּמְזִמּ֖וֹת ז֣וּ חָשָֽׁבוּ׃ | In arrogance the wicked hotly pursue the poor; let them be caught in the schemes that they have devised. | In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are caught in the schemes he devises. | |
| 3 | כִּֽי־ הִלֵּ֣ל רָ֭שָׁע עַל־ תַּאֲוַ֣ת נַפְשׁ֑וֹ וּבֹצֵ֥עַ בֵּ֝רֵ֗ךְ נִ֘אֵ֥ץ ׀ יְהוָֽה׃ | For the wicked boasts of the desires of his soul, and the one greedy for gain curses and renounces the LORD. | He boasts about the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD. | |
| 4 | רָשָׁ֗ע כְּגֹ֣בַהּ אַ֭פּוֹ בַּל־ יִדְרֹ֑שׁ אֵ֥ין אֱ֝לֹהִ֗ים כָּל־ מְזִמּוֹתָֽיו׃ | In the pride of his face the wicked does not seek him; all his thoughts are, “There is no God.” | In his pride the wicked man does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God. | |
| 5 | יָ֘חִ֤ילוּ [דרכו] (דְרָכָ֨יו ׀) בְּכָל־ עֵ֗ת מָר֣וֹם מִ֭שְׁפָּטֶיךָ מִנֶּגְדּ֑וֹ כָּל־ צ֝וֹרְרָ֗יו יָפִ֥יחַ בָּהֶֽם׃ | His ways prosper at all times; your judgments are on high, out of his sight; as for all his foes, he puffs at them. | His ways are always prosperous; your laws are rejected by him; he sneers at all his enemies. | |
| 6 | אָמַ֣ר בְּ֭לִבּוֹ בַּל־ אֶמּ֑וֹט לְדֹ֥ר וָ֝דֹ֗ר אֲשֶׁ֣ר לֹֽא־ בְרָֽע׃ | He says in his heart, “I shall not be moved; throughout all generations I shall not meet adversity.” | He says to himself, “Nothing will ever shake me.” He swears, “No one will ever do me harm.” | |
| 7 | אָלָ֤ה פִּ֣יהוּ מָ֭לֵא וּמִרְמ֣וֹת וָתֹ֑ךְ תַּ֥חַת לְ֝שׁוֹנ֗וֹ עָמָ֥ל וָאָֽוֶן׃ | His mouth is filled with cursing and deceit and oppression; under his tongue are mischief and iniquity. | His mouth is full of lies and threats; trouble and evil are under his tongue. | |
| 8 | יֵשֵׁ֤ב ׀ בְּמַאְרַ֬ב חֲצֵרִ֗ים בַּֽ֭מִּסְתָּרִים יַהֲרֹ֣ג נָקִ֑י עֵ֝ינָ֗יו לְֽחֵלְכָ֥ה יִצְפֹּֽנוּ׃ | He sits in ambush in the villages; in hiding places he murders the innocent. His eyes stealthily watch for the helpless; | He lies in wait near the villages; from ambush he murders the innocent. His eyes watch in secret for his victims; | |
| 9 | יֶאֱרֹ֬ב בַּמִּסְתָּ֨ר ׀ כְּאַרְיֵ֬ה בְסֻכֹּ֗ה יֶ֭אֱרֹב לַחֲט֣וֹף עָנִ֑י יַחְטֹ֥ף עָ֝נִ֗י בְּמָשְׁכ֥וֹ בְרִשְׁתּֽוֹ׃ | he lurks in ambush like a lion in his thicket; he lurks that he may seize the poor; he seizes the poor when he draws him into his net. | like a lion in cover he lies in wait. He lies in wait to catch the helpless; he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net. | |
| 10 | [ודכה] (יִדְכֶּ֥ה) יָשֹׁ֑חַ וְנָפַ֥ל בַּ֝עֲצוּמָ֗יו [חלכאים] (חֵ֣יל) (כָּאִֽים׃) | The helpless are crushed, sink down, and fall by his might. | His victims are crushed, they collapse; they fall under his strength. | |
| 11 | אָמַ֣ר בְּ֭לִבּוֹ שָׁ֣כַֽח אֵ֑ל הִסְתִּ֥יר פָּ֝נָ֗יו בַּל־ רָאָ֥ה לָנֶֽצַח׃ | He says in his heart, “God has forgotten, he has hidden his face, he will never see it.” | He says to himself, “God will never notice; he covers his face and never sees.” | |
| 12 | קוּמָ֤ה יְהוָ֗ה אֵ֭ל נְשָׂ֣א יָדֶ֑ךָ אַל־ תִּשְׁכַּ֥ח [עניים] (עֲנָוִֽים׃) | Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up your hand; forget not the afflicted. | Arise, LORD! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless. | |
| 13 | עַל־ מֶ֤ה ׀ נִאֵ֖ץ רָשָׁ֥ע ׀ אֱלֹהִ֑ים אָמַ֥ר בְּ֝לִבּ֗וֹ לֹ֣א תִּדְרֹֽשׁ׃ | Why does the wicked renounce God and say in his heart, “You will not call to account”? | Why does the wicked man revile God? Why does he say to himself, “He won’t call me to account|? | |
| 14 | רָאִ֡תָה כִּֽי־ אַתָּ֤ה ׀ עָ֘מָ֤ל וָכַ֨עַס ׀ תַּבִּיט֮ לָתֵ֪ת בְּיָ֫דֶ֥ךָ עָ֭לֶיךָ יַעֲזֹ֣ב חֵלֶ֑כָה יָ֝ת֗וֹם אַתָּ֤ה ׀ הָיִ֬יתָ עוֹזֵֽר׃ | But you do see, for you note mischief and vexation, that you may take it into your hands; to you the helpless commits himself; you have been the helper of the fatherless. | But you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted; you consider their grief and take it in hand. The victims commit themselves to you; you are the helper of the fatherless. | |
| 15 | שְׁ֭בֹר זְר֣וֹעַ רָשָׁ֑ע וָ֝רָ֗ע תִּֽדְרוֹשׁ־ רִשְׁע֥וֹ בַל־ תִּמְצָֽא׃ | Break the arm of the wicked and evildoer; call his wickedness to account till you find none. | Break the arm of the wicked man; call the evildoer to account for his wickedness that would not otherwise be found out. | |
| 16 | יְהוָ֣ה מֶ֭לֶךְ עוֹלָ֣ם וָעֶ֑ד אָבְד֥וּ ג֝וֹיִ֗ם מֵֽאַרְצֽוֹ׃ | The LORD is king forever and ever; the nations perish from his land. | The LORD is King for ever and ever; the nations will perish from his land. | |
| 17 | תַּאֲוַ֬ת עֲנָוִ֣ים שָׁמַ֣עְתָּ יְהוָ֑ה תָּכִ֥ין לִ֝בָּ֗ם תַּקְשִׁ֥יב אָזְנֶֽךָ׃ | O LORD, you hear the desire of the afflicted; you will strengthen their heart; you will incline your ear | You, LORD, hear the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry, | |
| 18 | לִשְׁפֹּ֥ט יָת֗וֹם וָ֫דָ֥ךְ בַּל־ יוֹסִ֥יף ע֑וֹד לַעֲרֹ֥ץ אֱ֝נ֗וֹשׁ מִן־ הָאָֽרֶץ׃ | to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more. | defending the fatherless and the oppressed, so that mere earthly mortals will never again strike terror. | |
