And YHWH spoke to Moses, saying, The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, The LORD said to Moses,
“Avenge the vengeance of the sons of Israel against the Midianite; afterward you shall be gathered to your people.” “Avenge the people of Israel on the Midianites. Afterward you shall be gathered to your people.” “Take vengeance on the Midianites for the Israelites. After that, you will be gathered to your people.”
And Moses spoke to the people, saying, “Arm some of your men for war, that they may go against the Midianite, to put the vengeance of YHWH on Midian. So Moses spoke to the people, saying, “Arm men from among you for the war, that they may go against Midian to execute the LORD’s vengeance on Midian. So Moses said to the people, “Arm some of your men to go to war against the Midianites so that they may carry out the LORD’s vengeance on them.
A thousand from a tribe, a thousand from a tribe, to all the tribes of Israel, you⁺ shall send to the war.” You shall send a thousand from each of the tribes of Israel to the war.” Send into battle a thousand men from each of the tribes of Israel.”
And there were given out of the thousands of Israel, a thousand from a tribe, twelve thousand armed for war. So there were provided, out of the thousands of Israel, a thousand from each tribe, twelve thousand armed for war. So twelve thousand men armed for battle, a thousand from each tribe, were supplied from the clans of Israel.
And Moses sent them to the war, a thousand from a tribe, and he sent them to the war along with Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest, and the holy vessels, and the signal and the trumpets in his hand. And Moses sent them to the war, a thousand from each tribe, together with Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, with the vessels of the sanctuary and the trumpets for the alarm in his hand. Moses sent them into battle, a thousand from each tribe, along with Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, who took with him articles from the sanctuary and the trumpets for signaling.
And they warred against the Midianite, as YHWH had commanded Moses; and they killed all the males. They warred against Midian, as the LORD commanded Moses, and killed every male. They fought against Midian, as the LORD commanded Moses, and killed every man.
And the kings of Midian they killed with their pierced ones—Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba—five kings of Midian; and Balaam son of Beor they also killed with the sword. They killed the kings of Midian with the rest of their slain, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian. And they also killed Balaam the son of Beor with the sword. Among their victims were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba—the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword.
And the sons of Israel took captive the women of Midian, with their little ones, and all their cattle, and all their flocks, and they plundered all their goods. And the people of Israel took captive the women of Midian and their little ones, and they took as plunder all their cattle, their flocks, and all their goods. The Israelites captured the Midianite women and children and took all the Midianite herds, flocks and goods as plunder.
And also all the cities where they dwelt, and all their forts, they burned with the fire. All their cities in the places where they lived, and all their encampments, they burned with fire, They burned all the towns where the Midianites had settled, as well as all their camps.
And they took all the spoil and all the plunder of the man and the beast. and took all the spoil and all the plunder, both of man and of beast. They took all the plunder and spoils, including the people and animals,
And they brought to Moses and to Eleazar the priest and to the congregation of the sons of Israel the captives, and the plunder, and the spoil—to the camp in the plains of Moab, which are by the Jordan near Jericho. Then they brought the captives and the plunder and the spoil to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation of the people of Israel, at the camp on the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho. and brought the captives, spoils and plunder to Moses and Eleazar the priest and the Israelite assembly at their camp on the plains of Moab, by the Jordan across from Jericho.
And Moses and Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the congregation went to meet them toward the outside of the camp. Moses and Eleazar the priest and all the chiefs of the congregation went to meet them outside the camp. Moses, Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the community went to meet them outside the camp.
And Moses was angry with the officers of the army, chiefs of the thousands and chiefs of the hundreds, who were coming in from the battle. Moses was angry with the officers of the army—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—who returned from the battle.
And Moses said to them, “Have you⁺ kept alive every female? Moses said to them, “Have you let all the women live? “Have you allowed all the women to live?” he asked them.
Behold, these women caused the sons of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to trespass against YHWH in the incident of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of YHWH. Behold, these, on Balaam’s advice, caused the people of Israel to act treacherously against the LORD in the incident of Peor, and so the plague came among the congregation of the LORD. “They were the ones who followed Balaam’s advice and enticed the Israelites to be unfaithful to the LORD in the Peor incident, so that a plague struck the LORD’s people.
And now kill every male among the little ones, and every woman who has known a man by lying with him you must kill. 22 Only the gold, and the silver, the bronze, the iron, the tin, and the lead— only the gold, the silver, the bronze, the iron, the tin, and the lead, Gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, lead
everything that can endure the fire—you⁺ shall put through the fire, and it shall be clean. Nevertheless, with the water of purification it shall be cleansed from sin. And all that cannot endure the fire, you⁺ shall put through the water. everything that can stand the fire, you shall pass through the fire, and it shall be clean. Nevertheless, it shall also be purified with the water for impurity. And whatever cannot stand the fire, you shall pass through the water. and anything else that can withstand fire must be put through the fire, and then it will be clean. But it must also be purified with the water of cleansing. And whatever cannot withstand fire must be put through that water.
And you⁺ shall wash your⁺ clothes on the seventh day and be clean, and afterward you⁺ may come into the camp.” You must wash your clothes on the seventh day, and you shall be clean. And afterward you may come into the camp.” On the seventh day wash your clothes and you will be clean. Then you may come into the camp.”

And Moses gave the tribute, which was the contribution for the LORD, to Eleazar the priest, as the LORD commanded Moses. Moses gave the tribute to Eleazar the priest as the LORD’s part, as the LORD commanded Moses.

And we have brought YHWH an offering for every man from that which he has found, of ornaments of gold, armlets, and bracelets, and signet rings, and earrings, and necklaces, to make atonement upon our souls before the face of YHWH.” And we have brought the LORD’s offering, what each man found, articles of gold, armlets and bracelets, signet rings, earrings, and beads, to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD.” So we have brought as an offering to the LORD the gold articles each of us acquired—armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings and necklaces—to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD.”
