1	And much livestock was unto the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad, very numerous. And they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, that indeed the region was a place for livestock;	Now the people of Reuben and the people of Gad had a very great number of livestock. And they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, and behold, the place was a place for livestock.	The Reubenites and Gadites, who had very large herds and flocks, saw that the lands of Jazer and Gilead were suitable for livestock.
2	and the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben came and spoke to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and to the leaders of the congregation, saying,	So the people of Gad and the people of Reuben came and said to Moses and to Eleazar the priest and to the chiefs of the congregation,	So they came to Moses and Eleazar the priest and to the leaders of the community, and said,
3	“Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Shebam, and Nebo, and Beon,	“Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon,	“Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo and Beon—
4	the land that YHWH defeated before the face of the congregation of Israel, it is a land for livestock, and your servants have livestock.”	the land that the LORD struck down before the congregation of Israel, is a land for livestock, and your servants have livestock.”	the land the LORD subdued before the people of Israel—are suitable for livestock, and your servants have livestock.
5	And they said, “If we have found favor in your eyes, let this land be given to your servants as a possession, do not make us pass over the Jordan.”	And they said, “If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for a possession. Do not take us across the Jordan.”	If we have found favor in your eyes,” they said, “let this land be given to your servants as our possession. Do not make us cross the Jordan.”
6	And Moses said to the sons of Gad and to the sons of Reuben, “Shall your⁺ brothers go to war and you⁺ sit here?	But Moses said to the people of Gad and to the people of Reuben, “Shall your brothers go to the war while you sit here?	Moses said to the Gadites and Reubenites, “Should your fellow Israelites go to war while you sit here?
7	And why do you⁺ discourage the heart of the sons of Israel from going over into the land that YHWH has given them?	Why will you discourage the heart of the people of Israel from going over into the land that the LORD has given them?	Why do you discourage the Israelites from crossing over into the land the LORD has given them?
8	Thus did your⁺ fathers when I sent them away from Kadesh-barnea to see the land.	Your fathers did this, when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land.	This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to look over the land.
9	And they went up to the Valley of Eshcol and saw the land, and they discouraged the heart of the sons of Israel so as not to go into the land that YHWH had given them.	For when they went up to the Valley of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the people of Israel from going into the land that the LORD had given them.	After they went up to the Valley of Eshkol and viewed the land, they discouraged the Israelites from entering the land the LORD had given them.
10	And the anger of YHWH was kindled on that day, and He swore an oath, saying,	And the LORD’s anger was kindled on that day, and he swore, saying,	The LORD’s anger was aroused that day and he swore this oath:
11	‘Surely none shall see of the men who came up from Egypt, from a son of twenty years and above, the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—for they have not wholly followed Me—	‘Surely none of the men who came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land that I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, because they have not wholly followed me,	Because they have not followed me wholeheartedly, not one of those who were twenty years old or more when they came up out of Egypt will see the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob—
12	except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun; for they have wholly followed YHWH.’	none except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua the son of Nun, for they have wholly followed the LORD.’	not one except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, for they followed the LORD wholeheartedly.’
13	And the anger of YHWH was kindled against Israel, and He made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until the finishing of all the generation that had done evil in the eyes of YHWH.	And the LORD’s anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation that had done evil in the sight of the LORD was gone.	The LORD’s anger burned against Israel and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until the whole generation of those who had done evil in his sight was gone.
14	And behold, you⁺ have risen up in place of your⁺ fathers, a brood of sinful men to add still more to the fierce anger of YHWH against Israel.	And behold, you have risen in your fathers’ place, a brood of sinful men, to increase still more the fierce anger of the LORD against Israel!	“And here you are, a brood of sinners, standing in the place of your fathers and making the LORD even more angry with Israel.
15	For if you⁺ turn away from following Him, He will once again leave them in the wilderness, and you⁺ will destroy all this people.”	For if you turn away from following him, he will again abandon them in the wilderness, and you will destroy all this people.”	If you turn away from following him, he will again leave all this people in the wilderness, and you will be the cause of their destruction.”
16	And they came near to him and said, “Walls for sheep we will build for our livestock here, and cities for our little ones,	Then they came near to him and said, “We will build sheepfolds here for our livestock, and cities for our little ones,	Then they came up to him and said, “We would like to build pens here for our livestock and cities for our women and children.
17	and we will be armed, hurrying before the face of the sons of Israel, until that when we have brought them to their place, and our little ones will dwell in the cities of defense because of those dwelling in the land.	but we will take up arms, ready to go before the people of Israel, until we have brought them to their place. And our little ones shall live in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.	But we will arm ourselves for battle and go ahead of the Israelites until we have brought them to their place. Meanwhile our women and children will live in fortified cities, for protection from the inhabitants of the land.
18	We will not return to our homes until the sons of Israel have received, each man, his inheritance.	We will not return to our homes until each of the people of Israel has gained his inheritance.	We will not return to our homes until each of the Israelites has received their inheritance.
19	For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance has come to us on this side of the Jordan at the rising.”	For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance has come to us on this side of the Jordan to the east.”	We will not receive any inheritance with them on the other side of the Jordan, because our inheritance has come to us on the east side of the Jordan.”
20	And Moses said to them, “If you⁺ do this thing, if you⁺ arm yourselves before the face of YHWH for the war,	So Moses said to them, “If you will do this, if you will take up arms to go before the LORD for the war,	Then Moses said to them, “If you will do this—if you will arm yourselves before the LORD for battle
21	and all your⁺ armed men pass over the Jordan before the face of YHWH until He has driven out His enemies from before Him,	and every armed man of you will pass over the Jordan before the LORD, until he has driven out his enemies from before him	and if all of you who are armed cross over the Jordan before the LORD until he has driven his enemies out before him—
22	and the land is subdued before the face of YHWH, then afterward you⁺ may return and be blameless before YHWH and before Israel. And this land shall be your⁺ possession before the face of YHWH.	and the land is subdued before the LORD; then after that you shall return and be free of obligation to the LORD and to Israel, and this land shall be your possession before the LORD.	then when the land is subdued before the LORD, you may return and be free from your obligation to the LORD and to Israel. And this land will be your possession before the LORD.
23	But if you⁺ do not do so, behold, you⁺ have sinned against YHWH; and know your⁺ sin, that it will find you⁺ out.	But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the LORD, and be sure your sin will find you out.	“But if you fail to do this, you will be sinning against the LORD; and you may be sure that your sin will find you out.
24	Build for yourselves cities for your⁺ little ones, and folds for your⁺ sheep; and what has proceeded out of your⁺ mouth, you⁺ shall do.”	Build cities for your little ones and folds for your sheep, and do what you have promised.”	Build cities for your women and children, and pens for your flocks, but do what you have promised.”
25	And the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben spoke to Moses, saying, “Your servants will do as my lord is commanding.	And the people of Gad and the people of Reuben said to Moses, “Your servants will do as my lord commands.	The Gadites and Reubenites said to Moses, “We your servants will do as our lord commands.
26	Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our livestock will be there in the cities of Gilead.	Our little ones, our wives, our livestock, and all our cattle shall remain there in the cities of Gilead,	Our children and wives, our flocks and herds will remain here in the cities of Gilead.
27	And your servants will pass over, every man armed for war, before the face of YHWH, to battle, as my lord has spoken.”	but your servants will pass over, every man who is armed for war, before the LORD to battle, as my lord orders.”	But your servants, every man who is armed for battle, will cross over to fight before the LORD, just as our lord says.”
28	And Moses gave orders concerning them to Eleazar the priest, and to Joshua son of Nun, and to the chief fathers of the tribes of the sons of Israel.	So Moses gave command concerning them to Eleazar the priest and to Joshua the son of Nun and to the heads of the fathers’ houses of the tribes of the people of Israel.	Then Moses gave orders about them to Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun and to the family heads of the Israelite tribes.
29	And Moses said to them, “If the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben pass over the Jordan with you⁺, every man armed for battle before the face of YHWH, and the land is subdued before you⁺, you⁺ shall give them the land of Gilead as a possession.	And Moses said to them, “If the people of Gad and the people of Reuben, every man who is armed to battle before the LORD, will pass with you over the Jordan and the land shall be subdued before you, then you shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession.	He said to them, “If the Gadites and Reubenites, every man armed for battle, cross over the Jordan with you before the LORD, then when the land is subdued before you, you must give them the land of Gilead as their possession.
30	But if they do not pass over armed with you⁺, they shall have possessions in your⁺ midst in the land of Canaan.”	However, if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan.”	But if they do not cross over with you armed, they must accept their possession with you in Canaan.”
31	And the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben answered, saying, “As YHWH has said to your servants, so we will do.	And the people of Gad and the people of Reuben answered, “What the LORD has said to your servants, we will do.	The Gadites and Reubenites answered, “Your servants will do what the LORD has said.
32	We will pass over armed before the face of YHWH into the land of Canaan; and with us is the possession of our inheritance on this side of the Jordan.”	We will pass over armed before the LORD into the land of Canaan, and the possession of our inheritance shall remain with us beyond the Jordan.”	We will cross over before the LORD into Canaan armed, but the property we inherit will be on this side of the Jordan.”
33	And Moses gave to them, to the sons of Gad, and to the sons of Reuben, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorite, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land with its cities, within the borders, the cities of the surrounding country.	And Moses gave to them, to the people of Gad and to the people of Reuben and to the half-tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land and its cities with their territories, the cities of the land throughout the country.	Then Moses gave to the Gadites, the Reubenites and the half-tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan—the whole land with its cities and the territory around them.
34	And the sons of Gad built Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer,	And the people of Gad built Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,	The Gadites built up Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,
35	and Atroth-shophan, and Jazer, and Jogbehah,	Atroth-shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,	Atroth Shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,
36	and Beth-nimrah, and Beth-haran, fortified cities and folds for sheep.	Beth-nimrah and Beth-haran, fortified cities, and folds for sheep.	Beth Nimrah and Beth Haran as fortified cities, and built pens for their flocks.
37	And the sons of Reuben built Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Kiriathaim,	And the people of Reuben built Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,	And the Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh and Kiriathaim,
38	and Nebo, and Baal-meon (the names being changed), and Sibmah. And they gave by these names the names to the cities that they built.	Nebo, and Baal-meon (their names were changed), and Sibmah. And they gave other names to the cities that they built.	as well as Nebo and Baal Meon (these names were changed) and Sibmah. They gave names to the cities they rebuilt.
39	And the sons of Machir son of Manasseh went to Gilead and took it, and dispossessed the Amorite who were in it.	And the sons of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead and captured it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were in it.	The descendants of Makir son of Manasseh went to Gilead, captured it and drove out the Amorites who were there.
40	And Moses gave Gilead to Machir son of Manasseh, and he dwelt in it.	And Moses gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh, and he settled in it.	So Moses gave Gilead to the Makirites, the descendants of Manasseh, and they settled there.
41	And Jair son of Manasseh went and captured their tent villages and called them Havvoth-jair.	And Jair the son of Manasseh went and captured their villages, and called them Havvoth-jair.	Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, captured their settlements and called them Havvoth Jair.
42	And Nobah went and took Kenath and its daughter-villages, and he called it Nobah after his own name.	And Nobah went and captured Kenath and its villages, and called it Nobah, after his own name.	And Nobah captured Kenath and its surrounding settlements and called it Nobah after himself.
