1 The children of Israel, even the whole congregation, came into the wilderness of Zin in the first month. The people stayed in Kadesh. Miriam died there, and was buried there. And the people of Israel, the whole congregation, came into the wilderness of Zin in the first month, and the people stayed in Kadesh. And Miriam died there and was buried there. In the first month the whole Israelite community arrived at the Desert of Zin, and they stayed at Kadesh. There Miriam died and was buried.
2 There was no water for the congregation; and they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron. Now there was no water for the congregation. And they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron. Now there was no water for the community, and the people gathered in opposition to Moses and Aaron.
3 The people quarreled with Moses, and spoke, saying, “We wish that we had died when our brothers died before Yahweh! They quarreled with Moses and said, “If only we had died when our brothers fell dead before the LORD!
4 Why have you brought Yahweh’s assembly into this wilderness, that we should die there, we and our animals? Why have you brought the assembly of the LORD into this wilderness, that we should die here, both we and our cattle? Why did you bring the LORD’s community into this wilderness, that we and our livestock should die here?
5 Why have you made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in to this evil place? It is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.” And why have you made us come up out of Egypt to bring us to this evil place? It is no place for grain or figs or vines or pomegranates, and there is no water to drink.” Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to this terrible place? It has no grain or figs, grapevines or pomegranates. And there is no water to drink!”
6 Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the door of the Tent of Meeting, and fell on their faces. Yahweh’s glory appeared to them. Then Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the entrance of the tent of meeting and fell on their faces. 7 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, and the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, The LORD said to Moses,
8 “Take the rod, and assemble the congregation, you, and Aaron your brother, and speak to the rock before their eyes, that it pour out its water. You shall bring water to them out of the rock; so you shall give the congregation and their livestock drink.” “Take the staff, and assemble the congregation, you and Aaron your brother, and tell the rock before their eyes to yield its water. So you shall bring water out of the rock for them and give drink to the congregation and their cattle.” “Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly together. Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community so they and their livestock can drink.”
9 Moses took the rod from before Yahweh, as he commanded him. And Moses took the staff from before the LORD, as he commanded him. So Moses took the staff from the LORD’s presence, just as he commanded him.
10 Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said to them, “Hear now, you rebels! Shall we bring water out of this rock for you?” Then Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said to them, “Hear now, you rebels: shall we bring water for you out of this rock?” He and Aaron gathered the assembly together in front of the rock and Moses said to them, “Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?”
11 Moses lifted up his hand, and struck the rock with his rod twice, and water came out abundantly. The congregation and their livestock drank. And Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock with his staff twice, and water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their livestock. Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank.
12 Yahweh said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you didn’t believe in me, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.” And the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not believe in me, to uphold me as holy in the eyes of the people of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land that I have given them.” But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them.”
13 These are the waters of Meribah; because the children of Israel strove with Yahweh, and he was sanctified in them. These are the waters of Meribah, where the people of Israel quarreled with the LORD, and through them he showed himself holy. 18 Edom said to him, “You shall not pass through me, lest I come out with the sword against you.” But Edom said to him, “You shall not pass through, lest I come out with the sword against you.” But Edom answered: “You may not pass through here; if you try, we will march out and attack you with the sword.”
19 The children of Israel said to him, “We will go up by the highway; and if we drink your water, I and my livestock, then I will give its price. Only let me, without doing anything else, pass through on my feet.” And the people of Israel said to him, “We will go up by the highway, and if we drink of your water, I and my livestock, then I will pay for it. Let me only pass through on foot, nothing more.” The Israelites replied: “We will go along the main road, and if we or our livestock drink any of your water, we will pay for it. We only want to pass through on foot—nothing else.”
20 He said, “You shall not pass through.” Edom came out against him with many people, and with a strong hand. But he said, “You shall not pass through.” And Edom came out against them with a large army and with a strong force. Again they answered: “You may not pass through.” Then Edom came out against them with a large and powerful army.
21 Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border, so Israel turned away from him. Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his territory, so Israel turned away from him. Since Edom refused to let them go through their territory, Israel turned away from them.
22 They traveled from Kadesh, and the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, came to Mount Hor. And they journeyed from Kadesh, and the people of Israel, the whole congregation, came to Mount Hor. The whole Israelite community set out from Kadesh and came to Mount Hor.
23 Yahweh spoke to Moses and Aaron in Mount Hor, by the border of the land of Edom, saying, And the LORD said to Moses and Aaron at Mount Hor, on the border of the land of Edom, At Mount Hor, near the border of Edom, the LORD said to Moses and Aaron,
24 “Aaron shall be gathered to his people; for he shall not enter into the land which I have given to the children of Israel, because you rebelled against my word at the waters of Meribah. “Let Aaron be gathered to his people, for he shall not enter the land that I have given to the people of Israel, because you rebelled against my command at the waters of Meribah. “Aaron will be gathered to his people. He will not enter the land I give the Israelites, because both of you rebelled against my command at the waters of Meribah.

28 Moses stripped Aaron of his garments, and put them on Eleazar his son. Aaron died there on the top of the mountain, and Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain. 29 When all the congregation saw that Aaron was dead, they wept for Aaron thirty days, even all the house of Israel. And when all the congregation saw that Aaron had perished, all the house of Israel wept for Aaron thirty days. and when the whole community learned that Aaron had died, all the Israelites mourned for him thirty days.
