1 And Jesus continued to speak to them in parables, and said, And again Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying, Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying:
2 the kingdom of the Messiah is such, as when a certain king made a wedding-feast for his son. “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son, “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son.
3 he sent out his servants to call those that were invited to the wedding: but they would not come. and sent his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding feast, but they would not come. 4 then he sent out other servants, saying, tell those who are invited, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and every thing is ready: come to the entertainment. Again he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “See, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast.”’ “Then he sent some more servants and said, ‘Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner: My oxen and fattened cattle have been butchered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.’
5 but instead of showing any regard, they went their ways, one to his farm, another to his traffick. But they paid no attention and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, “But they paid no attention and went off—one to his field, another to his business.

9 go therefore into the high streets, and as many as ye find, invite to the marriage: Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding feast as many as you find.’ So go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone you find.’
10 accordingly they went about the streets, and assembled all they met indifferently, both good and bad: so that the hall was furnished with guests. And those servants went out into the roads and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good. So the wedding hall was filled with guests. 13 then said the king to the servants, bind him hand and foot, take him away, and turn him out in the dark: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot and cast him into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ “Then the king told the attendants, ‘Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
14 thus many are called, but few are converted. For many are called, but few are chosen.” “For many are invited, but few are chosen.”
15 Upon this the Pharisees withdrew, and consulted how they might insnare him in his discourse. Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle him in his words. Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words.
16 they dispatch'd therefore some of their disciples, together with the Herodians, who thus address'd themselves to him; master, we know that you are sincere, and faithfully teach the divine law without fear or flattery: for you have no regard to the outward quality of men. And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone’s opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances. They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are.
17 tell us therefore, what is your opinion? is it lawful to pay tribute to Cesar, or no? Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not?”
18 but Jesus perceiving their malice, said, why, hypocrites, would you insnare me? But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, “You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me?
19 shew me the tribute money, and they brought him a penny. Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. Show me the coin used for paying the tax.” They brought him a denarius,
20 and he said unto them, whose image and inscription is this? And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” and he asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?”
21 they answer'd, Cesar's, then said he to them, render therefore unto Cesar, the things which are Cesar's: and unto God, the things that are God's. They said, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” “Caesar’s,” they replied. Then he said to them, “So give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”
22 on hearing this, they were filled with admiration, and so leaving him, they went their way. When they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away. When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and went away.
23 About that time the Sadducees, who say there is no future life, came and propos'd this question, The same day Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection, and they asked him a question, That same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question.
24 master, said they, by the law of Moses, in case a man die without children, his brother is oblig'd to marry his wife, in order to perpetuate his brother's name. saying, “Teacher, Moses said, ‘If a man dies having no children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.’ “Teacher,” they said, “Moses told us that if a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for him.
25 now there happen'd among us seven brothers, the first married but died without issue, leaving his wife to his brother: Now there were seven brothers among us. The first married and died, and having no offspring left his wife to his brother. Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, and since he had no children, he left his wife to his brother.
26 the same happen'd to the second, and the third, and so on to the seventh. So too the second and third, down to the seventh. The same thing happened to the second and third brother, right on down to the seventh.
27 last of all the woman died too: After them all, the woman died. Finally, the woman died.
28 now if there be another life after this, whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all married her. In the resurrection, therefore, of the seven, whose wife will she be? For they all had her.” Now then, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them were married to her?”
29 Jesus answered them, you are mistaken, for want of a true notion of the scriptures, and of the divine power. But Jesus answered them, “You are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God. Jesus replied, “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.
30 for in the other life after this, there will be no such thing as marriage; but they will be as the angels of God in heaven. For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.
31 now as to the state of life after death, have ye not read that expression of God himself, And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God: But about the resurrection of the dead—have you not read what God said to you,
32 " I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?" God is not a benefactor to the dead, but to the living. ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living.” I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead but of the living.”
33 when the people heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine. And when the crowd heard it, they were astonished at his teaching. When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.
34 but the Pharisees hearing that he had dumb-founded the Sadducees, they met together in council. But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together.
35 In the mean time one of them, a Doctor of the law, to try him, started this question, master, And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question:
36 which is the most important commandment of the law? “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
37 Jesus said to him, "thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind." And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. Jesus replied: “’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’
38 this is the first and most important precept, This is the great and first commandment. This is the first and greatest commandment.
39 and the second has an affinity with it, "thou shalt love thy neighbour as thy self." And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
40 these two precepts comprehend the substance of all the law and the prophets. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
41 While the Pharisees were still assembled, Jesus asked them, Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,
42 what think ye of Christ? whose son is he to be? they answered, David's. saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.” “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?” “The son of David,” they replied.
43 how comes it then, said he, that David by inspiration calls him Lord, in these words, He said to them, “How is it then that David, in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying, He said to them, “How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord’? For he says,
44 " the Lord said unto my Lord, sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?" “‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet”’? “’The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.|’
45 why then does David call him Lord, if He be David's son? If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?” If then David calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?”
46 but not a man was able to answer him a word, and from that time there was no body so hardy as to ask him any more questions. And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions. No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions.
