1 IT came to pass when the people gath ered around him to hear the word of God, he stood on the shore of the lake of Gennesaret. On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God.
2 And he saw two boats standing by the lake; but the fishermen had got out of them, and were washing their nets. and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets.
3 One of them belonged to Simon Peter; so Jesus went up and sat in it, and he asked to row it a little way from the shore to the water. And he sat and taught the people from the boat. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.
4 When he was through speaking, he said to Simon, Row out to the deep, and cast your net for a catch. And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”
5 Simon answered and said to him, Teacher, we have toiled all night, and have caught nothing; but just because of your word, I will cast the net. And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
6 And when they had done this, they inclosed a great many fish; and their net was breaking. And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.
7 So they signalled to their partners in the other boat, to come and help them. And when they came, they filled both the boats, till they were almost sinking. 8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell at the feet of Jesus, and said to him, I beg you, my Lord, leave me alone, for I am a sinful man. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!”
9 For he was amazed, and all who were with him, because of the catch of fish which they took. For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken,
10 So also was it with James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. But Jesus said to Simon, Do not be afraid; from henceforth you will be catching men for life. and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.”
11 And they brought the boats to land, and left everything and followed him. And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him. So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.
12 When Jesus was in one of the cities, there came a man who was covered with leprosy; and he saw Jesus and fell on his face, and besought him, and said, My Lord, if you will, you can cleanse me. While he was in one of the cities, there came a man full of leprosy. And when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged him, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.” While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was covered with leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he fell with his face to the ground and begged him, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”
13 And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, and said to him, I will, be clean; and immediately his leprosy left him. And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately the leprosy left him. Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” And immediately the leprosy left him.
14 And he charged him not to tell any man; but go and show yourself to the priests, and make an offering for your cleansing, as Moses commanded, for a testimony to them. And he charged him to tell no one, but “go and show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your cleansing, as Moses commanded, for a proof to them.” Then Jesus ordered him, “Don’t tell anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”
15 And the fame concerning him went out the more; and many people gathered to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases. But now even more the report about him went abroad, and great crowds gathered to hear him and to be healed of their infirmities. Yet the news about him spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses.
16 But he departed into the wilderness, and prayed. But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray. But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.
17 It came to pass on one of the days when Jesus was teaching, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were sitting, who had come from every town of Galilee and Judaea and Jerusalem. And the power of God was present to heal them. On one of those days, as he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there, who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with him to heal. One day Jesus was teaching, and Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there. They had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal the sick.
18 And some men brought a paralytic on a quilt-bed; and they wanted to go in and lay him before him. And behold, some men were bringing on a bed a man who was paralyzed, and they were seeking to bring him in and lay him before Jesus, Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus.
19 And when they found they were not able to carry him in, because of many people, they went up on the roof, and they lowered him down on his quilt-bed from the ceiling into the midst before Jesus. but finding no way to bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down with his bed through the tiles into the midst before Jesus. When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.
20 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, Man, your sins are forgiven. And when he saw their faith, he said, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.” When Jesus saw their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.”
21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason saying, Who is this man who talks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins, except God only? And the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, saying, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, “Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
22 But Jesus knew their thoughts, and he answered and said to them, What do you reason in your heart? When Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answered them, “Why do you question in your hearts? Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts?
23 Which is easier to say, Your sins are forgiven, or just to say, Arise and walk? Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’?
24 But that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins, he said to the paralytic, I tell you, Arise, take up your quilt-bed and go to your home. But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the man who was paralyzed— “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed and go home.” But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.”
25 And immediately he rose up before their eyes, and took his quilt-bed and went to his house, praising God. And immediately he rose up before them and picked up what he had been lying on and went home, glorifying God. Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God.
26 And every man was seized with amazement, and they praised God, and were filled with fear, saying, To-day we have seen wonders. And amazement seized them all, and they glorified God and were filled with awe, saying, “We have seen extraordinary things today.” Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God. They were filled with awe and said, “We have seen remarkable things today.”
27 After these things, Jesus went out and saw a publican named Levi, sitting at the custom house; and he said to him, Follow me. After this he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax booth. And he said to him, “Follow me.” After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. “Follow me,” Jesus said to him,
28 So he left everything, and rose up, and went after him. And leaving everything, he rose and followed him. and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.
29 And Levi gave him a great reception in his house; and there was a large gathering of publicans and others, who were guests with them. And Levi made him a great feast in his house, and there was a large company of tax collectors and others reclining at table with them. Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them.
30 And the scribes and the Pharisees murmured and said to his disciples, Why do you eat and drink with publicans and sinners? And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”
31 And Jesus answered and said to them, A physician is not needed for those who are well, but for those who are seriously sick. And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.
32 I have not come to call the righteous, but the sinners to repentance. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.” I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
33 They said to him, Why do the disciples of John always fast and pray, and also those of the Pharisees; but yours eat and drink? And they said to him, “The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink.” They said to him, “John’s disciples often fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking.”
34 He said to them, You cannot make the sons of the wedding feast fast, so long as the bridegroom is with them. And Jesus said to them, “Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? Jesus answered, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while he is with them?
35 But the days will come, when the bridegroom is taken from them, then they will fast in those days. The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days.” But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; in those days they will fast.”
36 And he told them a parable, No man cuts a piece of cloth from a new garment and puts it on a worn out garment; so that he may not cut the new, and the new piece will not blend with the old. He also told them a parable: “No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it on an old garment. If he does, he will tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. He told them this parable: “No one tears a piece out of a new garment to patch an old one. Otherwise, they will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old.
37 No man pours new wine into worn out skins; else the new wine will rend the skins, and the wine will run out, and the skins will be ruined. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined.
38 But they pour new wine into new skins, and both are well preserved. But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins.
39 And no man drinks old wine, and immediately wants new wine; for he says, The old is delicious. And no one after drinking old wine desires new, for he says, ‘The old is good.’” And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, ‘The old is better.’”
