1 As the crowd was pressing in on Jesus to hear God’s word, he was standing by Lake Gennesaret. On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God.
2 He saw two boats at the edge of the lake; the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets.
3 He got into one of the boats, which belonged to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from the land. Then he sat down and was teaching the crowds from the boat. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. 5 “Master,” Simon replied, “we’ve worked hard all night long and caught nothing. But if you say so, I’ll let down the nets.” And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
6 When they did this, they caught a great number of fish, and their nets began to tear. And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.
7 So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them; they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. 10 and so were James and John, Zebedee’s sons, who were Simon’s partners. “Don’t be afraid,” Jesus told Simon. “From now on you will be catching people.” and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.”
11 Then they brought the boats to land, left everything, and followed him. And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him. So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.
12 While he was in one of the towns, a man was there who had leprosy all over him. He saw Jesus, fell facedown, and begged him, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” While he was in one of the cities, there came a man full of leprosy. And when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged him, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.” While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was covered with leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he fell with his face to the ground and begged him, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”
13 Reaching out his hand, Jesus touched him, saying, “I am willing; be made clean,” and immediately the leprosy left him. And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately the leprosy left him. Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” And immediately the leprosy left him.
14 Then he ordered him to tell no one: “But go and show yourself to the priest, and offer what Moses commanded for your cleansing as a testimony to them.” And he charged him to tell no one, but “go and show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your cleansing, as Moses commanded, for a proof to them.” Then Jesus ordered him, “Don’t tell anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”
15 But the news about him spread even more, and large crowds would come together to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. But now even more the report about him went abroad, and great crowds gathered to hear him and to be healed of their infirmities. Yet the news about him spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses.
16 Yet he often withdrew to deserted places and prayed. But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray. But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.
17 On one of those days while he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea, and also from Jerusalem. And the Lord’s power to heal was in him. On one of those days, as he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there, who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem. 18 Just then some men came, carrying on a stretcher a man who was paralyzed. They tried to bring him in and set him down before him. And behold, some men were bringing on a bed a man who was paralyzed, and they were seeking to bring him in and lay him before Jesus, Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus.
19 Since they could not find a way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on the stretcher through the roof tiles into the middle of the crowd before Jesus. but finding no way to bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down with his bed through the tiles into the midst before Jesus. When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.
20 Seeing their faith he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.” And when he saw their faith, he said, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.” When Jesus saw their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.”
21 Then the scribes and the Pharisees began to think to themselves, “Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone? ” And the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, saying, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, “Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
22 But perceiving their thoughts, Jesus replied to them, “Why are you thinking this in your hearts? When Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answered them, “Why do you question in your hearts? Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts?
23 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’?
24 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” —he told the paralyzed man, “I tell you: Get up, take your stretcher, and go home.” But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the man who was paralyzed— “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed and go home.” But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.”
25 Immediately he got up before them, picked up what he had been lying on, and went home glorifying God. And immediately he rose up before them and picked up what he had been lying on and went home, glorifying God. Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God.
26 Then everyone was astounded, and they were giving glory to God. And they were filled with awe and said, “We have seen incredible things today.” And amazement seized them all, and they glorified God and were filled with awe, saying, “We have seen extraordinary things today.” Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God. They were filled with awe and said, “We have seen remarkable things today.”
27 After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the tax office, and he said to him, “Follow me.” After this he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax booth. And he said to him, “Follow me.” After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. “Follow me,” Jesus said to him,
28 So, leaving everything behind, he got up and began to follow him. And leaving everything, he rose and followed him. and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.
29 Then Levi hosted a grand banquet for him at his house. Now there was a large crowd of tax collectors and others who were reclining at the table with them. And Levi made him a great feast in his house, and there was a large company of tax collectors and others reclining at table with them. Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them.
30 But the Pharisees and their scribes were complaining to his disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners? ” And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”
31 Jesus replied to them, “It is not those who are healthy who need a doctor, but those who are sick. And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.
32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.” I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
33 Then they said to him, “John’s disciples fast often and say prayers, and those of the Pharisees do the same, but yours eat and drink.” And they said to him, “The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink.” They said to him, “John’s disciples often fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking.”
34 Jesus said to them, “You can’t make the wedding guests fast while the groom is with them, can you? And Jesus said to them, “Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? Jesus answered, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while he is with them?
35 But the time will come when the groom will be taken away from them—then they will fast in those days.” The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days.” But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; in those days they will fast.”
36 He also told them a parable: “No one tears a patch from a new garment and puts it on an old garment. Otherwise, not only will he tear the new, but also the piece from the new garment will not match the old. He also told them a parable: “No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it on an old garment. If he does, he will tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. He told them this parable: “No one tears a piece out of a new garment to patch an old one. Otherwise, they will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old.
37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins, it will spill, and the skins will be ruined. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined.
38 No, new wine is put into fresh wineskins. But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins.
39 And no one, after drinking old wine, wants new, because he says, ‘The old is better.’ ” And no one after drinking old wine desires new, for he says, ‘The old is good.’” And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, ‘The old is better.’”
