1 Now it happened that while Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret (Sea of Galilee), with the people crowding all around Him and listening to the word of God; On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God.
2 that He saw two boats lying at the edge of the lake, but the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their nets. and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets.
3 He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little distance from the shore. And He sat down and began teaching the crowds from the boat. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.
4 When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon [Peter], “Put out into the deep water and lower your nets for a catch [of fish].” And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”
5 Simon replied, “Master, we worked hard all night [to the point of exhaustion] and caught nothing [in our nets], but at Your word I will [do as you say and] lower the nets [again].” And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
6 When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their nets were [at the point of] breaking; And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.
7 so they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both of the boats [with fish], so that they began to sink. 9 For he and all his companions were completely astounded at the catch of fish which they had taken; For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken,
10 and so were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon [Peter]. Jesus said to Simon, “Have no fear; from now on you will be catching men!” and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.”
11 After they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed Him [becoming His disciples, believing and trusting in Him and following His example]. And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him. So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.
12 While Jesus was in one of the cities, there came a man covered with [an advanced case of] leprosy; and when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean and well.” While he was in one of the cities, there came a man full of leprosy. And when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged him, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.” While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was covered with leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he fell with his face to the ground and begged him, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”
13 And Jesus reached out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” And immediately the leprosy left him. And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately the leprosy left him. Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” And immediately the leprosy left him.
14 Jesus ordered him to tell no one [that he might happen to meet], “But go and show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your purification, just as Moses commanded, as a testimony (witness) to them [that this is a work of Messiah].” And he charged him to tell no one, but “go and show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your cleansing, as Moses commanded, for a proof to them.” Then Jesus ordered him, “Don’t tell anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”
15 But the news about Him was spreading farther, and large crowds kept gathering to hear Him and to be healed of their illnesses. But now even more the report about him went abroad, and great crowds gathered to hear him and to be healed of their infirmities. Yet the news about him spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses.
16 But Jesus Himself would often slip away to the wilderness and pray [in seclusion]. But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray. But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.
17 One day as He was teaching, there were Pharisees and teachers of the Law sitting there who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present with Him to heal. On one of those days, as he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there, who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with him to heal. One day Jesus was teaching, and Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there. They had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal the sick.
18 Some men came carrying on a stretcher a man who was paralyzed, and they tried to bring him in and lay him down in front of Jesus. And behold, some men were bringing on a bed a man who was paralyzed, and they were seeking to bring him in and lay him before Jesus, Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus.
19 But finding no way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof [and removed some tiles to make an opening] and lowered him through the tiles with his stretcher, into the middle of the crowd, in front of Jesus. but finding no way to bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down with his bed through the tiles into the midst before Jesus. When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.
20 When Jesus saw their [active] faith [springing from confidence in Him], He said, “Man, your sins are forgiven.” And when he saw their faith, he said, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.” When Jesus saw their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.”
21 The scribes and the Pharisees began to consider and question [the implications of what He had said], saying, “Who is this man who speaks blasphemies [by claiming the rights and prerogatives of God]? Who can forgive sins [that is, remove guilt, nullify sin’s penalty, and assign righteousness] except God alone?” And the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, saying, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, “Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
22 But Jesus, knowing their [hostile] thoughts, answered them, “Why are you questioning [these things] in your hearts? When Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answered them, “Why do you question in your hearts? Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts?
23 Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’?
24 But, in order that you may know that the Son of Man (the Messiah) has authority and power on earth to forgive sins”—He said to the paralyzed man, “I say to you, get up, pick up your stretcher and go home.” But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the man who was paralyzed— “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed and go home.” But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.”
25 He immediately stood up before them, picked up his stretcher, and went home glorifying and praising God. And immediately he rose up before them and picked up what he had been lying on and went home, glorifying God. Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God.
26 They were all astonished, and they began glorifying God; and they were filled with [reverential] fear and kept saying, “We have seen wonderful and incredible things today!” And amazement seized them all, and they glorified God and were filled with awe, saying, “We have seen extraordinary things today.” Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God. They were filled with awe and said, “We have seen remarkable things today.”
27 After this Jesus went out and noticed a tax collector named Levi (Matthew) sitting at the tax booth; and He said to him, “Follow Me [as My disciple, accepting Me as your Master and Teacher and walking the same path of life that I walk].” After this he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax booth. And he said to him, “Follow me.” After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. “Follow me,” Jesus said to him,
28 And he left everything behind and got up and began to follow Jesus [as His disciple]. And leaving everything, he rose and followed him. and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.
29 Levi (Matthew) gave a great banquet for Him at his house; and there was a large crowd of tax collectors and others who were reclining at the table with them. And Levi made him a great feast in his house, and there was a large company of tax collectors and others reclining at table with them. Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them.
30 The Pharisees and their scribes [seeing those with whom He was associating] began murmuring in discontent to His disciples, asking, “Why are you eating and drinking with the tax collectors and sinners [including non-observant Jews]?” And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”
31 And Jesus replied to them, “It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but [only] those who are sick. And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.
32 I did not come to call the [self-proclaimed] righteous [who see no need to repent], but sinners to repentance [to change their old way of thinking, to turn from sin and to seek God and His righteousness].” I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.” I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
33 Then they said to Him, “The disciples of John [the Baptist] often practice fasting and offer prayers [of special petition], and so do the disciples of the Pharisees; but Yours eat and drink.” And they said to him, “The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink.” They said to him, “John’s disciples often fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking.”
34 Jesus said to them, “Can you make the wedding guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? And Jesus said to them, “Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? Jesus answered, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while he is with them?
35 But days [for mourning] will come when the bridegroom is [forcefully] taken away from them. They will fast in those days.” The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days.” But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; in those days they will fast.”
36 He also told them a parable: “No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and puts it on an old one; otherwise he will both tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. He also told them a parable: “No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it on an old garment. If he does, he will tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. He told them this parable: “No one tears a piece out of a new garment to patch an old one. Otherwise, they will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old.
37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new [fermenting] wine will [expand and] burst the skins and it will be spilled out, and the skins will be ruined. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined.
38 But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins.
39 And no one, after drinking old wine, wishes for new; for he says, ‘The old is fine.’” And no one after drinking old wine desires new, for he says, ‘The old is good.’” And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, ‘The old is better.’”
