1	AND on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came to the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared. 5	And as they were afraid, and bowed down their countenance towards the ground, they said unto them: Why seek you the living with the dead? In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead?
6	He is not here, but is risen. Remember how he spoke unto you, when he was in Galilee,	He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee,	He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee:
7	Saying: The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.	that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.”	The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ “

12	But Peter rising up, ran to the sepulchre, and stooping down, he saw the linen cloths laid by themselves; and went away wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.	But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened.	Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.
13	And behold, two of them went, the same day, to a town which was sixty furlongs from Jerusalem, named Emmaus. 18	And the one of them, whose name was Cleophas, answering, said to him: Art thou only a stranger to Jerusalem, and hast not known the things that have been done there in these days?	Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”	One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”
19	To whom he said: What things? And they said: Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet, mighty in work and word before God and all the people;	And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,	“What things?” he asked. “About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people.
20	And how our chief priests and princes delivered him to be condemned to death, and crucified him.	and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him.	The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him;
21	But we hoped, that it was he that should have redeemed Israel: and now besides all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.	But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened.	but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place.
22	Yea and certain women also of our company affrighted us, who before it was light, were at the sepulchre,	Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning,	In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning
23	And not finding his body, came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, who say that he is alive.	and when they did not find his body, they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive.	but didn’t find his body. 24	And some of our people went to the sepulchre, and found it so as the women had said, but him they found not. 25	Then he said to them: O foolish, and slow of heart to believe in all things which the prophets have spoken.	And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!	He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken!
26	Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and so to enter into his glory?	Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?”	Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?”
27	And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded to them in all the scriptures, the things that were concerning him.	And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.	And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.
28	And they drew night to the town, whither they were going: and he made as though he would go farther.	So they drew near to the village to which they were going. 29	But they constrained him; saying: Stay with us, because it is towards evening, and the day is now far spent. And he went in with them.	but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them.	But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.
30	And it came to pass, whilst he was at table with them, he took bread, and blessed, and brake, and gave to them. 33	And rising up, the same hour, they went back to Jerusalem: and they found the eleven gathered together, and those that were staying with them,	And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together,	They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together
34	Saying: The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.	saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!”	and saying, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.”
35	And they told what things were done in the way; and how they knew him in the breaking of the bread.	Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.	Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.
36	Now whilst they were speaking these things, Jesus stood in the midst of them, and saith to them: Peace be to you; it is I, fear not.	As they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!”	While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
37	But they being troubled and frightened, supposed that they saw a spirit.	But they were startled and frightened and thought they saw a spirit.	They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost.
38	And he said to them: Why are you troubled, and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?	And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts?	He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds?
39	See my hands and feet, that it is I myself; handle, and see: for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as you see me to have.	See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.”	Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”
40	And when he had said this, he shewed them his hands and feet.	And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.	When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet.
41	But while they yet believed not, and wondered for joy, he said: Have you any thing to eat?	And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling, he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?”	And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”
42	And they offered him a piece of a broiled fish, and a honeycomb.	They gave him a piece of broiled fish,	They gave him a piece of broiled fish,

44	And he said to them: These are the words which I spoke to you, while I was yet with you, that all things must needs be fulfilled, which are written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.	Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”	He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.”
45	Then he opened their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures.	Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,	Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.
46	And he said to them: Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise again from the dead, the third day:	and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead,	He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,
47	And that penance and remission of sins should be preached in his name, unto all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.	and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.	and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
48	And you are witnesses of these things.	You are witnesses of these things.	You are witnesses of these things.
49	And I send the promise of my Father upon you: but stay you in the city till you be endued with power from on high.	And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”	I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
50	And he led them out as far as Bethania: and lifting up his hands, he blessed them.	And he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them.	When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them.
51	And it came to pass, whilst he blessed them, he departed from them, and was carried up to heaven.	While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven.	While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven.
52	And they adoring went back into Jerusalem with great joy.	And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy,	Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy.
53	And they were always in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.	and were continually in the temple blessing God.	And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.
