1	After this the Lord appointed seventy[-two] others whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit. 2	He said to them, “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest. He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.
3	Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves.	Go your way; behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves.	Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.
4	Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way.	Carry no moneybag, no knapsack, no sandals, and greet no one on the road.	Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.
5	Into whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this household.’	Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house!’	“When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’
6	If a peaceful person lives there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you.	And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him. But if not, it will return to you.	If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you.
7	Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you, for the laborer deserves his payment. Do not move about from one house to another.	And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the laborer deserves his wages. Do not go from house to house.	Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house.
8	Whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is set before you,	Whenever you enter a town and they receive you, eat what is set before you.	“When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is offered to you.
9	cure the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God is at hand for you.’	Heal the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’	Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’
10	Whatever town you enter and they do not receive you, go out into the streets and say,	But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you, go into its streets and say,	But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say,
11	‘The dust of your town that clings to our feet, even that we shake off against you.’ Yet know this: the kingdom of God is at hand.	‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that the kingdom of God has come near.’	Even the dust of your town we wipe from our feet as a warning to you. Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God has come near.’
12	I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom on that day than for that town.	I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.	I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.
13	“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.	“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.	“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.
14	But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you.	But it will be more bearable in the judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you.	But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you.
15	And as for you, Capernaum, ‘Will you be exalted to heaven? You will go down to the netherworld.’	And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You shall be brought down to Hades.	And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.
16	Whoever listens to you listens to me. Whoever rejects you rejects me. And whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.”	“The one who hears you hears me, and the one who rejects you rejects me, and the one who rejects me rejects him who sent me.”	“Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; but whoever rejects me rejects him who sent me.”
17	The seventy[-two] returned rejoicing, and said, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us because of your name.”	The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!”	The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.”
18	Jesus said, “I have observed Satan fall like lightning from the sky.	And he said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.	He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.
19	Behold, I have given you the power ‘to tread upon serpents’ and scorpions and upon the full force of the enemy and nothing will harm you.	Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.	I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.
20	Nevertheless, do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”	Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”	However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
21	At that very moment he rejoiced [in] the holy Spirit and said, “I give you praise, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will.	In that same hour he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.	At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.
22	All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.”	All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”	“All things have been committed to me by my Father. 23	Turning to the disciples in private he said, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.	Then turning to the disciples he said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see!	Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.

25	There was a scholar of the law who stood up to test him and said, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”	And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”	On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
26	Jesus said to him, “What is written in the law? How do you read it?”	He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?”	“What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”
27	He said in reply, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”	And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”	He answered, “’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”
28	He replied to him, “You have answered correctly; do this and you will live.”	And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.”	“You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”
29	But because he wished to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”	But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”	But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
30	Jesus replied, “A man fell victim to robbers as he went down from Jerusalem to Jericho. They stripped and beat him and went off leaving him half-dead.	Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead.	In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead.
31	A priest happened to be going down that road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side.	Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side.	A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side.
32	Likewise a Levite came to the place, and when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side.	So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.	So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.
33	But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him was moved with compassion at the sight.	But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion.	But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him.
34	He approached the victim, poured oil and wine over his wounds and bandaged them. Then he lifted him up on his own animal, took him to an inn and cared for him.	He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him.	He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him.
35	The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper with the instruction, ‘Take care of him. If you spend more than what I have given you, I shall repay you on my way back.’	And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’	The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’
36	Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers’ victim?”	Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?”	“Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”
37	He answered, “The one who treated him with mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”	He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.”	The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”
38	As they continued their journey he entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him.	Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house.	As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him.
39	She had a sister named Mary [who] sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak.	And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching.	She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said.
40	Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me.”	But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.”	But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
41	The Lord said to her in reply, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things.	But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things,	“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things,
42	There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.”	but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”	but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
