5	And he said to them, “Suppose one of you has a friend to whom he goes at midnight and says, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread,	And he said to them, “Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves,	Then Jesus said to them, “Suppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread;
6	for a friend of mine has arrived at my house from a journey and I have nothing to offer him,’	for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’;	a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him.’
7	and he says in reply from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door has already been locked and my children and I are already in bed. I cannot get up to give you anything.’	and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything’?	And suppose the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’
8	I tell you, if he does not get up to give him the loaves because of their friendship, he will get up to give him whatever he needs because of his persistence.	I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence he will rise and give him whatever he needs.	I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity he will surely get up and give you as much as you need.
9	“And I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.	And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.	“So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
10	For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.	For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.	For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
11	What father among you would hand his son a snake when he asks for a fish?	What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent;	“Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead?
12	Or hand him a scorpion when he asks for an egg?	or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?	Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?
13	If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the holy Spirit to those who ask him?”	If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”	If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
14	He was driving out a demon [that was] mute, and when the demon had gone out, the mute person spoke and the crowds were amazed.	Now he was casting out a demon that was mute. When the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke, and the people marveled.	Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute. When the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowd was amazed.
15	Some of them said, “By the power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons, he drives out demons.”	But some of them said, “He casts out demons by Beelzebul, the prince of demons,”	But some of them said, “By Beelzebul, the prince of demons, he is driving out demons.”
16	Others, to test him, asked him for a sign from heaven.	while others, to test him, kept seeking from him a sign from heaven.	Others tested him by asking for a sign from heaven.
17	But he knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste and house will fall against house.	But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a divided household falls.	Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them: “Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall.
18	And if Satan is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that it is by Beelzebul that I drive out demons.	And if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul.	If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? I say this because you claim that I drive out demons by Beelzebul.
19	If I, then, drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your own people drive them out? Therefore they will be your judges.	And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges.	Now if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your followers drive them out? So then, they will be your judges.
20	But if it is by the finger of God that [I] drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.	But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.	But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
21	When a strong man fully armed guards his palace, his possessions are safe.	When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are safe;	“When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe.
22	But when one stronger than he attacks and overcomes him, he takes away the armor on which he relied and distributes the spoils.	but when one stronger than he attacks him and overcomes him, he takes away his armor in which he trusted and divides his spoil.	But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him, he takes away the armor in which the man trusted and divides up his plunder.
23	Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.	Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.	“Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.
24	“When an unclean spirit goes out of someone, it roams through arid regions searching for rest but, finding none, it says, ‘I shall return to my home from which I came.’	“When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and finding none it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’	“When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’
25	But upon returning, it finds it swept clean and put in order.	And when it comes, it finds the house swept and put in order.	When it arrives, it finds the house swept clean and put in order.
26	Then it goes and brings back seven other spirits more wicked than itself who move in and dwell there, and the last condition of that person is worse than the first.”	Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there. And the last state of that person is worse than the first.”	Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first.”
27	While he was speaking, a woman from the crowd called out and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that carried you and the breasts at which you nursed.”	As he said these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!”	As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, “Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.”
28	He replied, “Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.”	But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”	He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”
29	While still more people gathered in the crowd, he said to them, “This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah.	When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, “This generation is an evil generation. It seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.	As the crowds increased, Jesus said, “This is a wicked generation. It asks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.
30	Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation.	For as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be to this generation.	For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation.
31	At the judgment the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation and she will condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and there is something greater than Solomon here.	The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.	The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the people of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom; and now something greater than Solomon is here.
32	At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because at the preaching of Jonah they repented, and there is something greater than Jonah here.	The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here. 33	“No one who lights a lamp hides it away or places it [under a bushel basket], but on a lampstand so that those who enter might see the light.	“No one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar or under a basket, but on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light.	“No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light.
34	The lamp of the body is your eye. When your eye is sound, then your whole body is filled with light, but when it is bad, then your body is in darkness.	Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but when it is bad, your body is full of darkness.	Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of darkness.
35	Take care, then, that the light in you not become darkness.	Therefore be careful lest the light in you be darkness.	See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness.
36	If your whole body is full of light, and no part of it is in darkness, then it will be as full of light as a lamp illuminating you with its brightness.”	If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly bright, as when a lamp with its rays gives you light.”	Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.”
37	After he had spoken, a Pharisee invited him to dine at his home. He entered and reclined at table to eat.	While Jesus was speaking, a Pharisee asked him to dine with him, so he went in and reclined at table.	When Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him to eat with him; so he went in and reclined at the table.
38	The Pharisee was amazed to see that he did not observe the prescribed washing before the meal.	The Pharisee was astonished to see that he did not first wash before dinner.	But the Pharisee was surprised when he noticed that Jesus did not first wash before the meal.
39	The Lord said to him, “Oh you Pharisees! Although you cleanse the outside of the cup and the dish, inside you are filled with plunder and evil.	And the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.	Then the Lord said to him, “Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.
40	You fools! Did not the maker of the outside also make the inside?	You fools! Did not he who made the outside make the inside also?	You foolish people! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also?
41	But as to what is within, give alms, and behold, everything will be clean for you.	But give as alms those things that are within, and behold, everything is clean for you.	But now as for what is inside you—be generous to the poor, and everything will be clean for you.
42	Woe to you Pharisees! You pay tithes of mint and of rue and of every garden herb, but you pay no attention to judgment and to love for God. These you should have done, without overlooking the others.	“But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.	“Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.
43	Woe to you Pharisees! You love the seat of honor in synagogues and greetings in marketplaces.	Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the best seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces.	“Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and respectful greetings in the marketplaces.
44	Woe to you! You are like unseen graves over which people unknowingly walk.”	Woe to you! For you are like unmarked graves, and people walk over them without knowing it.”	“Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves, which people walk over without knowing it.”
45	Then one of the scholars of the law said to him in reply, “Teacher, by saying this you are insulting us too.”	One of the lawyers answered him, “Teacher, in saying these things you insult us also.”	One of the experts in the law answered him, “Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also.”
46	And he said, “Woe also to you scholars of the law! You impose on people burdens hard to carry, but you yourselves do not lift one finger to touch them.	And he said, “Woe to you lawyers also! For you load people with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers.	Jesus replied, “And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.
47	Woe to you! You build the memorials of the prophets whom your ancestors killed.	Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed.	“Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your ancestors who killed them.
48	Consequently, you bear witness and give consent to the deeds of your ancestors, for they killed them and you do the building.	So you are witnesses and you consent to the deeds of your fathers, for they killed them, and you build their tombs.	So you testify that you approve of what your ancestors did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs.
49	Therefore, the wisdom of God said, ‘I will send to them prophets and apostles; some of them they will kill and persecute’	Therefore also the Wisdom of God said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,’	Because of this, God in his wisdom said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.’
50	in order that this generation might be charged with the blood of all the prophets shed since the foundation of the world,	so that the blood of all the prophets, shed from the foundation of the world, may be charged against this generation,	Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world,
51	from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah who died between the altar and the temple building. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be charged with their blood!	from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be required of this generation.	from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all.
52	Woe to you, scholars of the law! You have taken away the key of knowledge. You yourselves did not enter and you stopped those trying to enter.”	Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge. You did not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering.”	“Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.”
53	When he left, the scribes and Pharisees began to act with hostility toward him and to interrogate him about many things,	As he went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard and to provoke him to speak about many things,	When Jesus went outside, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions,
54	for they were plotting to catch him at something he might say.	lying in wait for him, to catch him in something he might say.	waiting to catch him in something he might say.
