1 Seeing that many took in hand to set in order a narration of the matters that have been fully assured among us, Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that have been accomplished among us, Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us,
2 as they delivered to us, who from the beginning became eyewitnesses, and officers of the word, just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word have delivered them to us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word.
3 it seemed good also to me, having followed from the first after all things exactly, to write to you in order, most noble Theophilus, it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus,
4 that you may know the certainty of the things wherein you were instructed. that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught. so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.
5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest, by name Zacharias, of the division of Abijah, and his wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name Elizabeth; In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, of the division of Abijah. And he had a wife from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron.
6 and they were both righteous before God, going on in all the commands and righteousnesses of the LORD blameless, And they were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and statutes of the Lord. Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly.
7 and they had no child, because that Elizabeth was barren, and both were advanced in their days. But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were advanced in years. But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old.
8 And it came to pass, in his acting as priest, in the order of his division before God, Now while he was serving as priest before God when his division was on duty, Once when Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God,

11 And there appeared to him a messenger of the LORD standing on the right side of the altar of the incense, And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. 12 and Zacharias, having seen, was troubled, and fear fell on him; And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him. When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear.
13 and the messenger said to him, “Do not fear, Zacharias, for your supplication was heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear a son to you, and you will call his name John, But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John.
14 and there will be joy to you, and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth,
15 for he will be great before the LORD, and wine and strong drink he may not drink, and he will be full of the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb; for he will be great before the Lord. And he must not drink wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born.
16 and he will turn many of the sons of Israel to the LORD their God, And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God, He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God.
17 and he will go before Him, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn hearts of fathers to children, and disobedient ones to the wisdom of righteous ones, to make ready for the LORD, a people prepared.” and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared.” And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”
18 And Zacharias said to the messenger, “Whereby will I know this? For I am aged, and my wife is advanced in her days?” And Zechariah said to the angel, “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.” Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.”
19 And the messenger answering said to him, “I am Gabriel, who has been standing near before God, and I was sent to speak to you, and to proclaim this good news to you, And the angel answered him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. The angel said to him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news.
20 and behold, you will be silent, and not able to speak, until the day that these things will come to pass, because you did not believe my words that will be fulfilled in their season.” And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time.” And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time.”
21 And the people were waiting for Zacharias, and wondering at his lingering in the temple, And the people were waiting for Zechariah, and they were wondering at his delay in the temple. Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple.
22 and having come out, he was not able to speak to them, and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple, and he was beckoning to them, and remained mute. And when he came out, he was unable to speak to them, and they realized that he had seen a vision in the temple. And he kept making signs to them and remained mute. When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs to them but remained unable to speak.
23 And it came to pass, when the days of his service were fulfilled, he went away to his house, And when his time of service was ended, he went to his home. When his time of service was completed, he returned home.
24 and after those days, his wife Elizabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying, After these days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she kept herself hidden, saying, After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion.
25 “Thus the LORD has done to me, in days in which He looked on [me], to take away my reproach among men.” “Thus the Lord has done for me in the days when he looked on me, to take away my reproach among people.” “The Lord has done this for me,” she said. “In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace among the people.”
26 And in the sixth month the messenger Gabriel was sent by God, to a city of Galilee, the name of which [is] Nazareth, In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee,
27 to a virgin, betrothed to a man, whose name [is] Joseph, of the house of David, and the name of the virgin [is] Mary. to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.
28 And the messenger having come in to her, said, “Greetings, favored one, the LORD [is] with you; blessed [are] you among women”; And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!” The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”
29 and she, having seen, was troubled at his word, and was reasoning of what kind this salutation may be. But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.
30 And the messenger said to her, “Do not fear, Mary, for you have found favor with God; And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.
31 and behold, you will conceive in the womb, and will bring forth a Son, and call His Name Jesus; And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.
32 He will be great, and He will be called Son of the Highest, and the LORD God will give Him the throne of His father David, He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,
33 and He will reign over the house of Jacob for all ages; and of His kingdom there will be no end.” and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”
34 And Mary said to the messenger, “How will this be, seeing I do not know a husband?” And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”
35 And the messenger answering said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you, therefore also the holy-begotten thing will be called Son of God; And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God. The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.
36 and behold, Elizabeth, your relative, she also has conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month to her who was called barren; And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month.
37 because nothing will be impossible with God.” For nothing will be impossible with God.” For no word from God will ever fail.”
38 And Mary said, “Behold, the maidservant of the LORD; let it be to me according to your saying,” and the messenger went away from her. And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her. “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.
39 And Mary having arisen in those days, went into the hill-country, with haste, to a city of Judea, In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea,
40 and entered into the house of Zacharias, and greeted Elizabeth. and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth.
41 And it came to pass, when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the baby leapt in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.
42 and spoke out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed [are] you among women, and blessed [is] the Fruit of your womb; and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!
43 and from where [is] this to me, that the mother of my Lord might come to me? And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44 For behold, when the voice of your salutation came to my ears, the baby in my womb leapt in gladness; For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.
45 and blessed [is] she who believed, for there will be a completion to the things spoken to her from the LORD.” And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.” Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”
46 And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the LORD, And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord
47 And my spirit was glad on God my Savior, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48 Because He looked on the lowliness of His maidservant, || For behold, from now on all the generations will call me blessed, for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed,
49 For He who is mighty did great things to me, || And holy [is] His Name, for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. for the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is his name.
50 And His kindness [is] to generations of generations, || To those fearing Him; And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation.
51 He did powerfully with His arm, || He scattered abroad the proud in the thought of their heart, He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.
52 He brought down the mighty from thrones, || And He exalted the lowly, he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate; He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble.
53 He filled the hungry with good, || And the rich He sent away empty; he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty.
54 He has taken hold of His servant Israel, || To remember kindness, He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful
55 As He spoke to our fathers, || To Abraham and to his seed—throughout the age.” as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever.” to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors.”
56 And Mary remained with her about three months, and turned back to her house. And Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her home. Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.
57 And to Elizabeth was the time fulfilled for her bringing forth, and she bore a son, Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son. When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son.
58 and the neighbors and her relatives heard that the LORD was making His kindness great with her, and they were rejoicing with her. And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy.
59 And it came to pass, on the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child, and they were calling him by the name of his father, Zacharias, And on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child. And they would have called him Zechariah after his father, On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah,
60 and his mother answering said, “No, but he will be called John.” but his mother answered, “No; he shall be called John.” but his mother spoke up and said, “No! He is to be called John.”
61 And they said to her, “There is none among your relatives who is called by this name,” And they said to her, “None of your relatives is called by this name.” They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who has that name.”
62 and they were making signs to his father, what he would wish him to be called, And they made signs to his father, inquiring what he wanted him to be called. Then they made signs to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child.
63 and having asked for a tablet, he wrote, saying, “John is his name”; and they all wondered; And he asked for a writing tablet and wrote, “His name is John.” And they all wondered. He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s astonishment he wrote, “His name is John.”
64 and his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue, and he was speaking, praising God. And immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, blessing God. Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he began to speak, praising God.
65 And fear came on all those dwelling around them, and in all the hill-country of Judea were all these sayings spoken of, And fear came on all their neighbors. And all these things were talked about through all the hill country of Judea, All the neighbors were filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea people were talking about all these things.
66 and all who heard laid them up in their hearts, saying, “What then will this child be?” And the hand of the LORD was with him. and all who heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, “What then will this child be?” For the hand of the Lord was with him. Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking, “What then is this child going to be?” For the Lord’s hand was with him.
67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying, And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying, His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied:
68 “Blessed [is] the LORD, the God of Israel, || Because He looked on, || And worked redemption for His people, “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has come to his people and redeemed them.
69 And raised a horn of salvation to us, || In the house of His servant David, and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David, He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David
70 As He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets, || Which have been from the age; as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, (as he said through his holy prophets of long ago),
71 Salvation from our enemies, || And out of the hand of all hating us, that we should be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us; salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us—
72 To do kindness with our fathers, || And to be mindful of His holy covenant, to show the mercy promised to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant, to show mercy to our ancestors and to remember his holy covenant,
73 An oath that He swore to Abraham our father, the oath that he swore to our father Abraham, to grant us the oath he swore to our father Abraham:
74 To give to us, without fear, || Having been delivered out of the hand of our enemies, that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, to rescue us from the hand of our enemies, and to enable us to serve him without fear
75 To serve Him, in holiness and righteousness || Before Him, all the days of our life. in holiness and righteousness before him all our days. in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.
76 And you, child, || Prophet of the Highest will you be called; For you will go before the face of the LORD, || To prepare His ways. And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him,
77 To give knowledge of salvation to His people || In forgiveness of their sins, to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins, to give his people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins,
78 Through the yearnings of our God, || In which the rising from on high looked on us, because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven
79 To give light to those sitting in darkness and death-shade, || To guide our feet to a way of peace.” to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.” to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace.”
80 And the child grew, and was strengthened in spirit, and he was in the deserts until the day of his showing to Israel. And the child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness until the day of his public appearance to Israel. And the child grew and became strong in spirit; and he lived in the wilderness until he appeared publicly to Israel.
