1 Before the Passover Festival, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. Jesus replied, “If I don’t wash you, you have no part with me.” Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”
9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not only my feet, but also my hands and my head.” Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”
10 “One who has bathed,” Jesus told him, “doesn’t need to wash anything except his feet, but he is completely clean. You are clean, but not all of you.” Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.” Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.”
11 For he knew who would betray him. This is why he said, “Not all of you are clean.” For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.” For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.
12 When Jesus had washed their feet and put on his outer clothing, he reclined again and said to them, “Do you know what I have done for you? When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them.
13 You call me Teacher and Lord—and you are speaking rightly, since that is what I am. You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am.
14 So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.
15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done for you. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
16 “Truly I tell you, a servant is not greater than his master, and a messenger is not greater than the one who sent him. Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
17 If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
18 “I’m not speaking about all of you; I know those I have chosen. But the Scripture must be fulfilled: The one who eats my bread has raised his heel against me. I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture will be fulfilled, ‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’ “I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture: ‘He who shared my bread has turned against me.’
19 I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am he. I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. “I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am who I am.
20 Truly I tell you, whoever receives anyone I send receives me, and the one who receives me receives him who sent me.” Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.” Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”
21 When Jesus had said this, he was troubled in his spirit and testified, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.” After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.”
22 The disciples started looking at one another—uncertain which one he was speaking about. The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant.
23 One of his disciples, the one Jesus loved, was reclining close beside Jesus. One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table at Jesus’ side, One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him.
24 Simon Peter motioned to him to find out who it was he was talking about. so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus of whom he was speaking. Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means.”
25 So he leaned back against Jesus and asked him, “Lord, who is it? ” So that disciple, leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?”
26 Jesus replied, “He’s the one I give the piece of bread to after I have dipped it.” When he had dipped the bread, he gave it to Judas, Simon Iscariot’s son. Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.
27 After Judas ate the piece of bread, Satan entered him. So Jesus told him, “What you’re doing, do quickly.” Then after he had taken the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.” As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.”
28 None of those reclining at the table knew why he said this to him. Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him.
29 Since Judas kept the money-bag, some thought that Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the festival,” or that he should give something to the poor. Some thought that, because Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor. Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival, or to give something to the poor.
30 After receiving the piece of bread, he immediately left. And it was night. So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. And it was night. As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.
31 When he had left, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in him. When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in him.
32 If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once. If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once.
33 Little children, I am with you a little while longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so now I tell you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’ Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’ “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.
34 “I give you a new command: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you are also to love one another. A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
36 “Lord,” Simon Peter said to him, “where are you going? ” Jesus answered, “Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but you will follow later.” Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but you will follow afterward.” Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.”
37 “Lord,” Peter asked, “why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”
38 Jesus replied, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly I tell you, a rooster will not crow until you have denied me three times. Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times. Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!
