1 Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them to the end. Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him; During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him, The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus.
3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God; Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God;
4 He rises from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist.
5 After that he pours water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which he was girded. 7 Jesus answered and said to him, What I do you know not now; but you shall know hereafter. Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”
8 Peter said to him, You shall never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash you not, you have no part with me. Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”
9 Simon Peter said to him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”
10 Jesus said to him, He that is washed needs not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and you are clean, but not all. Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.” Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.”
11 For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, You are not all clean. For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.” For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.
12 So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said to them, Know you what I have done to you? When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them.
13 You call me Master and Lord: and you say well; for so I am. You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am.
14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; you also ought to wash one another's feet. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.
15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
16 Truly, truly, I say to you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
17 If you know these things, happy are you if you do them. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
18 I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eats bread with me has lifted up his heel against me. I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture will be fulfilled, ‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’ “I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture: ‘He who shared my bread has turned against me.’
19 Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, you may believe that I am he. I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. “I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am who I am.
20 Truly, truly, I say to you, He that receives whomsoever I send receives me; and he that receives me receives him that sent me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.” Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”
21 When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Truly, truly, I say to you, that one of you shall betray me. After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.”
22 Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spoke. The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant.
23 Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved. One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table at Jesus’ side, One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him.
24 Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spoke. so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus of whom he was speaking. Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means.”
25 He then lying on Jesus' breast said to him, Lord, who is it? So that disciple, leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?”
26 Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.
27 And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus to him, That you do, do quickly. Then after he had taken the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.” As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.”
28 Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spoke this to him. Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him.
29 For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said to him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor. Some thought that, because Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor. Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival, or to give something to the poor.
30 He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night. So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. And it was night. As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.
31 Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him. When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in him.
32 If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him. If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once. If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once.
33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You shall seek me: and as I said to the Jews, Where I go, you cannot come; so now I say to you. Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’ “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.
34 A new commandment I give to you, That you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
35 By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love one to another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
36 Simon Peter said to him, Lord, where go you? Jesus answered him, Where I go, you can not follow me now; but you shall follow me afterwards. Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but you will follow afterward.” Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.”
37 Peter said to him, Lord, why cannot I follow you now? I will lay down my life for your sake. Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”
38 Jesus answered him, Will you lay down your life for my sake? Truly, truly, I say to you, The cock shall not crow, till you have denied me thrice. Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times. Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!
