But now the youngest have laughed me to scorn, now they reprove me in their turn, whose fathers I set at nought; whom I did not deem worthy to be with my shepherd dogs. | “But now they laugh at me, men who are younger than I, whose fathers I would have disdained to set with the dogs of my flock. | “But now they mock me, men younger than I, whose fathers I would have disdained to put with my sheep dogs. |
Yea, why had I the strength of their hands? for them the full term of life was lost. | What could I gain from the strength of their hands, men whose vigor is gone? | Of what use was the strength of their hands to me, since their vigor had gone from them? |
One is childless in want and famine, such as they that fled but lately the distress and misery of drought. | Through want and hard hunger they gnaw the dry ground by night in waste and desolation; | Haggard from want and hunger, they roamed the parched land in desolate wastelands at night. |
Who compass the salt places on the sounding shore , who had salt herbs for their food, and were dishonorable and of no repute, in want of every good thing; who also ate roots of trees by reason of great hunger. | they pick saltwort and the leaves of bushes, and the roots of the broom tree for their food. | In the brush they gathered salt herbs, and their food was the root of the broom bush. |
Thieves have risen up against me, | They are driven out from human company; they shout after them as after a thief. | They were banished from human society, shouted at as if they were thieves. |
whose houses were the caves of the rocks, who lived under the wild shrubs. | In the gullies of the torrents they must dwell, in holes of the earth and of the rocks. | They were forced to live in the dry stream beds, among the rocks and in holes in the ground. |
They will cry out among the rustling bushes . | Among the bushes they bray; under the nettles they huddle together. | They brayed among the bushes and huddled in the undergrowth. |
They are sons of fools and vile men, whose name and glory are quenched from off the earth. | A senseless, a nameless brood, they have been whipped out of the land. | A base and nameless brood, they were driven out of the land. |
But now I am their music, and they have me for a by-word. | “And now I have become their song; I am a byword to them. | “And now those young men mock me in song; I have become a byword among them. |
And they stood aloof and abhorred me, and spared not to spit in my face. | They abhor me; they keep aloof from me; they do not hesitate to spit at the sight of me. | They detest me and keep their distance; they do not hesitate to spit in my face. |
For he has opened his quiver and afflicted me: they also have cast off the restraint of my presence. | Because God has loosed my cord and humbled me, they have cast off restraint in my presence. | Now that God has unstrung my bow and afflicted me, they throw off restraint in my presence. |
They have risen up against me on the right hand of their offspring; they have stretched out their foot, and directed against me the ways of their destruction. | On my right hand the rabble rise; they push away my feet; they cast up against me their ways of destruction. | On my right the tribe attacks; they lay snares for my feet, they build their siege ramps against me. |
My paths are ruined; for they have stripped off my raiment: he has shot at me with his weapons. | They break up my path; they promote my calamity; they need no one to help them. | They break up my road; they succeed in destroying me. ‘No one can help him,’ they say. |
And he has pleaded against me as he will: I am overwhelmed with pains. | As through a wide breach they come; amid the crash they roll on. | They advance as through a gaping breach; amid the ruins they come rolling in. |
My pains return upon me ; my hope is gone like the wind, and my safety as a cloud. | Terrors are turned upon me; my honor is pursued as by the wind, and my prosperity has passed away like a cloud. | Terrors overwhelm me; my dignity is driven away as by the wind, my safety vanishes like a cloud. |
Even now my life shall be poured forth upon me; and days of anguish seize me. | “And now my soul is poured out within me; days of affliction have taken hold of me. | “And now my life ebbs away; days of suffering grip me. |
And by night my bones are confounded; and my sinews are relaxed. | The night racks my bones, and the pain that gnaws me takes no rest. | Night pierces my bones; my gnawing pains never rest. |
With great force my disease has taken hold of my garment: it has compassed me as the collar of my coat. | With great force my garment is disfigured; it binds me about like the collar of my tunic. | In his great power God becomes like clothing to me; he binds me like the neck of my garment. |
And thou hast counted me as clay; my portion in dust and ashes. | God has cast me into the mire, and I have become like dust and ashes. | He throws me into the mud, and I am reduced to dust and ashes. |
And I have cried to thee, but thou hearest me not: but they stood still, and observed me. | I cry to you for help and you do not answer me; I stand, and you only look at me. | “I cry out to you, God, but you do not answer; I stand up, but you merely look at me. |
They attacked me also without mercy: thou hast scourged me with a strong hand. | You have turned cruel to me; with the might of your hand you persecute me. | You turn on me ruthlessly; with the might of your hand you attack me. |
And thou hast put me to grief, and hast cast me away from safety. | You lift me up on the wind; you make me ride on it, and you toss me about in the roar of the storm. | You snatch me up and drive me before the wind; you toss me about in the storm. |
For I know that death will destroy me: for the earth is the house appointed for every mortal. | For I know that you will bring me to death and to the house appointed for all living. | I know you will bring me down to death, to the place appointed for all the living. |
Oh then that I might lay hands upon myself, or at least ask another, and he should do this for me. | “Yet does not one in a heap of ruins stretch out his hand, and in his disaster cry for help? | “Surely no one lays a hand on a broken man when he cries for help in his distress. |
Yet I wept over every helpless man; I groaned when I saw a man in distress. | Did not I weep for him whose day was hard? Was not my soul grieved for the needy? | Have I not wept for those in trouble? Has not my soul grieved for the poor? |
But I, when I waited for good things, behold, days of evils came the more upon me. | But when I hoped for good, evil came, and when I waited for light, darkness came. | Yet when I hoped for good, evil came; when I looked for light, then came darkness. |
My belly boiled, and would not cease: the days of poverty prevented me. | My inward parts are in turmoil and never still; days of affliction come to meet me. | The churning inside me never stops; days of suffering confront me. |
I went mourning without restraint: and I have stood and cried out in the assembly. | I go about darkened, but not by the sun; I stand up in the assembly and cry for help. | I go about blackened, but not by the sun; I stand up in the assembly and cry for help. |
I am become a brother of monsters, and a companion of ostriches. | I am a brother of jackals and a companion of ostriches. | I have become a brother of jackals, a companion of owls. |
And my skin has been greatly blackened, and my bones are burned with heat. | My skin turns black and falls from me, and my bones burn with heat. | My skin grows black and peels; my body burns with fever. |
My harp also has been turned into mourning, and my song into my weeping. | My lyre is turned to mourning, and my pipe to the voice of those who weep. | My lyre is tuned to mourning, and my pipe to the sound of wailing. |
