“But now those younger than I mock and laugh at me, Whose fathers I refused to put with the sheepdogs of my flock. | “But now they laugh at me, men who are younger than I, whose fathers I would have disdained to set with the dogs of my flock. | “But now they mock me, men younger than I, whose fathers I would have disdained to put with my sheep dogs. |
“Indeed, how could the strength of their hands profit me? Vigor had perished from them. | What could I gain from the strength of their hands, men whose vigor is gone? | Of what use was the strength of their hands to me, since their vigor had gone from them? |
“They are gaunt with want and famine; They gnaw the dry and barren ground by night in [the gloom of] waste and desolation. | Through want and hard hunger they gnaw the dry ground by night in waste and desolation; | Haggard from want and hunger, they roamed the parched land in desolate wastelands at night. |
“They pluck [and eat] saltwort (mallows) among the bushes, And their food is the root of the broom shrub. | they pick saltwort and the leaves of bushes, and the roots of the broom tree for their food. | In the brush they gathered salt herbs, and their food was the root of the broom bush. |
“They are driven from the community; They shout after them as after a thief. | They are driven out from human company; they shout after them as after a thief. | They were banished from human society, shouted at as if they were thieves. |
“They must dwell on the slopes of wadis And in holes in the ground and in rocks. | In the gullies of the torrents they must dwell, in holes of the earth and of the rocks. | They were forced to live in the dry stream beds, among the rocks and in holes in the ground. |
“Among the bushes they cry out [like wild animals]; Beneath the prickly scrub they gather and huddle together. | Among the bushes they bray; under the nettles they huddle together. | They brayed among the bushes and huddled in the undergrowth. |
“They are the sons of [worthless and nameless] fools, They have been driven out of the land. | A senseless, a nameless brood, they have been whipped out of the land. | A base and nameless brood, they were driven out of the land. |
“And now I have become [the subject of] their taunting; Yes, I am a byword and a laughingstock to them. | “And now I have become their song; I am a byword to them. | “And now those young men mock me in song; I have become a byword among them. |
“They hate me, they stand aloof from me, And do not refrain from spitting in my face. | They abhor me; they keep aloof from me; they do not hesitate to spit at the sight of me. | They detest me and keep their distance; they do not hesitate to spit in my face. |
“For God has loosed His bowstring [attacking me] and [He has] afflicted and humbled me; They have cast off the bridle [of restraint] before me. | Because God has loosed my cord and humbled me, they have cast off restraint in my presence. | Now that God has unstrung my bow and afflicted me, they throw off restraint in my presence. |
“On my right the [rabble] brood rises; They push my feet away, and they build up their ways of destruction against me [like an advancing army]. | On my right hand the rabble rise; they push away my feet; they cast up against me their ways of destruction. | On my right the tribe attacks; they lay snares for my feet, they build their siege ramps against me. |
“They break up and clutter my path [upsetting my plans], They profit from my destruction; No one restrains them. | They break up my path; they promote my calamity; they need no one to help them. | They break up my road; they succeed in destroying me. ‘No one can help him,’ they say. |
“As through a wide breach they come, Amid the crash [of falling walls] they roll on [over me]. | As through a wide breach they come; amid the crash they roll on. | They advance as through a gaping breach; amid the ruins they come rolling in. |
“Terrors are turned upon me; They chase away my honor and reputation like the wind, And my prosperity has passed away like a cloud. | Terrors are turned upon me; my honor is pursued as by the wind, and my prosperity has passed away like a cloud. | Terrors overwhelm me; my dignity is driven away as by the wind, my safety vanishes like a cloud. |
“And now my soul is poured out within me; The days of affliction have seized me. | “And now my soul is poured out within me; days of affliction have taken hold of me. | “And now my life ebbs away; days of suffering grip me. |
“My bones are pierced [with aching] in the night season, And the pains that gnaw me take no rest. | The night racks my bones, and the pain that gnaws me takes no rest. | Night pierces my bones; my gnawing pains never rest. |
“By the great force [of my disease] my garment (skin) is disfigured and blemished; It binds about me [choking me] like the collar of my coat. | With great force my garment is disfigured; it binds me about like the collar of my tunic. | In his great power God becomes like clothing to me; he binds me like the neck of my garment. |
“God has cast me into the mire [a swampland of crisis], And I have become [worthless] like dust and ashes. | God has cast me into the mire, and I have become like dust and ashes. | He throws me into the mud, and I am reduced to dust and ashes. |
“I cry to You for help, [Lord,] but You do not answer me; I stand up, but You [only] gaze [indifferently] at me. | I cry to you for help and you do not answer me; I stand, and you only look at me. | “I cry out to you, God, but you do not answer; I stand up, but you merely look at me. |
“You have become harsh and cruel to me; With the might of Your hand You [keep me alive only to] persecute me. | You have turned cruel to me; with the might of your hand you persecute me. | You turn on me ruthlessly; with the might of your hand you attack me. |
“You lift me up on the wind and cause me to ride [upon it]; And You toss me about in the tempest and dissolve me in the storm. | You lift me up on the wind; you make me ride on it, and you toss me about in the roar of the storm. | You snatch me up and drive me before the wind; you toss me about in the storm. |
“For I know that You will bring me to death And to the house of meeting [appointed] for all the living. | For I know that you will bring me to death and to the house appointed for all living. | I know you will bring me down to death, to the place appointed for all the living. |
“However, does not one falling in a heap of ruins stretch out his hand? Or in his disaster [will he not] therefore cry out for help? | “Yet does not one in a heap of ruins stretch out his hand, and in his disaster cry for help? | “Surely no one lays a hand on a broken man when he cries for help in his distress. |
“Did I not weep for one whose life was hard and filled with trouble? Was not my heart grieved for the needy? | Did not I weep for him whose day was hard? Was not my soul grieved for the needy? | Have I not wept for those in trouble? Has not my soul grieved for the poor? |
“When I expected good, then came evil [to me]; And when I waited for light, then came darkness. | But when I hoped for good, evil came, and when I waited for light, darkness came. | Yet when I hoped for good, evil came; when I looked for light, then came darkness. |
“I am seething within and my heart is troubled and cannot rest; Days of affliction come to meet me. | My inward parts are in turmoil and never still; days of affliction come to meet me. | The churning inside me never stops; days of suffering confront me. |
“I go about mourning without comfort [my skin blackened by disease, not by the heat of the sun]; I stand up in the assembly and cry out for help. | I go about darkened, but not by the sun; I stand up in the assembly and cry for help. | I go about blackened, but not by the sun; I stand up in the assembly and cry for help. |
“I am a brother to [howling] jackals, And a companion to ostriches [which scream dismally]. | I am a brother of jackals and a companion of ostriches. | I have become a brother of jackals, a companion of owls. |
“My skin falls from me in blackened flakes, And my bones are burned with fever. | My skin turns black and falls from me, and my bones burn with heat. | My skin grows black and peels; my body burns with fever. |
“Therefore my lyre (harp) is used for [the sound of] mourning, And my flute for the [sound of the] voices of those who weep. | My lyre is turned to mourning, and my pipe to the voice of those who weep. | My lyre is tuned to mourning, and my pipe to the sound of wailing. |
