1 “As for you, take up a lament for the princes of Israel And you, take up a lamentation for the princes of Israel, Moreover take thou up a lamentation for the princes of Israel, “As for you, take up a song of mourning for the leaders of Israel “Take up a lament concerning the princes of Israel
2 and say: ‘What was your mother? A lioness among the lions! She lay down among the young lions; she reared her cubs. and say: What was your mother? A lioness! Among lions she crouched; in the midst of young lions she reared her cubs. And say, What <i>is</i> thy mother? A lioness: she lay down among lions, she nourished her whelps among young lions. and say, ‘What was your mother? A lioness among lions! She lay down among young lions, She raised her cubs. and say: “’What a lioness was your mother among the lions! She lay down among them and reared her cubs.
3 She brought up one of her cubs, and he became a young lion. After learning to tear his prey, he devoured men. And she brought up one of her cubs; he became a young lion, and he learned to catch prey; he devoured men. And she brought up one of her whelps: it became a young lion, and it learned to catch the prey; it devoured men. ‘When she brought up one of her cubs, He became a young lion, And he learned to tear <i>his</i> prey; He devoured people. She brought up one of her cubs, and he became a strong lion. He learned to tear the prey and he became a man-eater.
4 When the nations heard of him, he was trapped in their pit. With hooks they led him away to the land of Egypt. The nations heard about him; he was caught in their pit, and they brought him with hooks to the land of Egypt. The nations also heard of him; he was taken in their pit, and they brought him with chains unto the land of Egypt. ‘Then nations heard about him; He was caught in their trap, And they brought him with hooks To the land of Egypt. 5 When she saw that she had waited in vain, that her hope was lost, she took another of her cubs and made him a young lion. 7 He broke down their strongholds and devastated their cities. The land and everything in it shuddered at the sound of his roaring. and seized their widows. He laid waste their cities, and the land was appalled and all who were in it at the sound of his roaring. And he knew their desolate palaces, and he laid waste their cities; and the land was desolate, and the fulness thereof, by the noise of his roaring. ‘He destroyed their palaces And laid waste their cities; And the land and its fullness were appalled Because of the sound of his roaring. He broke down their strongholds and devastated their towns. The land and all who were in it were terrified by his roaring.
8 Then the nations set out against him from the provinces on every side. They spread their net over him; he was trapped in their pit. 10 Your mother was like a vine in your vineyard, planted by the water; it was fruitful and full of branches because of the abundant waters. 11 It had strong branches, fit for a ruler’s scepter. It towered high above the thick branches, conspicuous for its height and for its dense foliage. Its strong stems became rulers’ scepters; it towered aloft among the thick boughs; it was seen in its height with the mass of its branches. And she had strong rods for the sceptres of them that bare rule, and her stature was exalted among the thick branches, and she appeared in her height with the multitude of her branches. ‘And it had strong stems <i>fit</i> for scepters of rulers, And its height was raised above the clouds So that it was seen in its height with the mass of its branches. Its branches were strong, fit for a ruler’s scepter. It towered high above the thick foliage, conspicuous for its height and for its many branches.
12 But it was uprooted in fury, cast down to the ground, and the east wind dried up its fruit. Its strong branches were stripped off and they withered; the fire consumed them. But the vine was plucked up in fury, cast down to the ground; the east wind dried up its fruit; they were stripped off and withered. As for its strong stem, fire consumed it. But she was plucked up in fury, she was cast down to the ground, and the east wind dried up her fruit: her strong rods were broken and withered; the fire consumed them. ‘But it was uprooted in fury; It was thrown down to the ground; And the east wind dried up its fruit. 14 Fire has gone out from its main branch and devoured its fruit; on it no strong branch remains fit for a ruler’s scepter.’ This is a lament and shall be used as a lament.” And fire has gone out from the stem of its shoots, has consumed its fruit, so that there remains in it no strong stem, no scepter for ruling. This is a lamentation and has become a lamentation. And fire is gone out of a rod of her branches, <i>which</i> hath devoured her fruit, so that she hath no strong rod <i>to be</i> a sceptre to rule. This <i>is</i> a lamentation, and shall be for a lamentation. ‘And fire has gone out from <i>its</i> stem; It has consumed its shoots <i>and</i> fruit, So that there is no strong stem in it, A scepter to rule.’” This is a song of mourning, and has become a song of mourning. Fire spread from one of its main branches and consumed its fruit. No strong branch is left on it fit for a ruler’s scepter.’ “This is a lament and is to be used as a lament.”
