1	Nebuchadnezzar the king, to all the peoples, nations, and languages who are dwelling in all the earth: Your⁺ peace be multiplied!	King Nebuchadnezzar to all peoples, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied to you!	King Nebuchadnezzar, To the nations and peoples of every language, who live in all the earth: May you prosper greatly!
2	The signs and wonders that the Most High God has worked for me, it seemed proper for me to show.	It has seemed good to me to show the signs and wonders that the Most High God has done for me.	It is my pleasure to tell you about the miraculous signs and wonders that the Most High God has performed for me.
3	His signs, how great, and His wonders, how mighty! His kingdom is a kingdom for the age, and His dominion is from generation to generation!	How great are his signs, how mighty his wonders! His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion endures from generation to generation.	How great are his signs, how mighty his wonders! His kingdom is an eternal kingdom; his dominion endures from generation to generation.
4	I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at ease in my house, and flourishing in my palace.	I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at ease in my house and prospering in my palace.	I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at home in my palace, contented and prosperous.
5	I saw a dream, and it frightened me, and the thoughts upon my bed and visions of my head alarmed me.	I saw a dream that made me afraid. As I lay in bed the fancies and the visions of my head alarmed me.	I had a dream that made me afraid. As I was lying in bed, the images and visions that passed through my mind terrified me.
6	And from me a decree was set forth to bring in before me all the wise men of Babylon, that the interpretation of the dream they should make known to me.	So I made a decree that all the wise men of Babylon should be brought before me, that they might make known to me the interpretation of the dream.	So I commanded that all the wise men of Babylon be brought before me to interpret the dream for me.
7	Then came in the magicians, the enchanters, the astrologers, and the diviners; and I told the dream before them, and its interpretation they could not make known to me.	Then the magicians, the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the astrologers came in, and I told them the dream, but they could not make known to me its interpretation.	When the magicians, enchanters, astrologers and diviners came, I told them the dream, but they could not interpret it for me.
8	And at last came before me Daniel—of whom his name is Belteshazzar according to the name of my god, and for whom the Spirit of the holy gods is in him—and I told the dream before him:	At last Daniel came in before me—he who was named Belteshazzar after the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods—and I told him the dream, saying,	Finally, Daniel came into my presence and I told him the dream. (He is called Belteshazzar, after the name of my god, and the spirit of the holy gods is in him.)
9	“O Belteshazzar, chief of the magicians, because I know that the Spirit of the holy gods is in you, and a secret is not constraining for you, may you tell to me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and its interpretation.	“O Belteshazzar, chief of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in you and that no mystery is too difficult for you, tell me the visions of my dream that I saw and their interpretation.	I said, “Belteshazzar, chief of the magicians, I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in you, and no mystery is too difficult for you. Here is my dream; interpret it for me.
10	And the visions of my head upon my bed: I was looking, and behold, a tree in the midst of the earth, and its height was great.	The visions of my head as I lay in bed were these: I saw, and behold, a tree in the midst of the earth, and its height was great.	These are the visions I saw while lying in bed: I looked, and there before me stood a tree in the middle of the land. Its height was enormous.
11	The tree grew large and became strong, and its height reached to the heavens, and the sight of it to the ends of all the earth.	The tree grew and became strong, and its top reached to heaven, and it was visible to the end of the whole earth.	The tree grew large and strong and its top touched the sky; it was visible to the ends of the earth.
12	Its leaves were lovely, and its fruit abundant, and food for all was in it; under it the beasts of the field found shade, and in its branches the birds of the heavens dwelt, and from it all flesh was fed.	Its leaves were beautiful and its fruit abundant, and in it was food for all. The beasts of the field found shade under it, and the birds of the heavens lived in its branches, and all flesh was fed from it.	Its leaves were beautiful, its fruit abundant, and on it was food for all. Under it the wild animals found shelter, and the birds lived in its branches; from it every creature was fed.
13	I was looking at the visions of my head upon my bed, and behold, a watcher, a holy one from heaven, was coming down.	“I saw in the visions of my head as I lay in bed, and behold, a watcher, a holy one, came down from heaven.	“In the visions I saw while lying in bed, I looked, and there before me was a holy one, a messenger, coming down from heaven.
14	He called out with strength, and thus said: ‘Chop down the tree and cut off its branches. Strip off its leaves and scatter its fruit. Let the beasts flee from under it, and the birds from its branches.	He proclaimed aloud and said thus: ‘Chop down the tree and lop off its branches, strip off its leaves and scatter its fruit. Let the beasts flee from under it and the birds from its branches.	He called in a loud voice: ‘Cut down the tree and trim off its branches; strip off its leaves and scatter its fruit. Let the animals flee from under it and the birds from its branches.
15	Nevertheless, leave the stump and its roots in the ground, with a band of iron and bronze, in the grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and his portion with the beasts in the grass of the earth.	But leave the stump of its roots in the earth, bound with a band of iron and bronze, amid the tender grass of the field. Let him be wet with the dew of heaven. Let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth.	But let the stump and its roots, bound with iron and bronze, remain in the ground, in the grass of the field. “’Let him be drenched with the dew of heaven, and let him live with the animals among the plants of the earth.
16	Let his heart be changed from that of a man, and let the heart of a beast be given to him, and let seven times pass over him.	Let his mind be changed from a man’s, and let a beast’s mind be given to him; and let seven periods of time pass over him.	Let his mind be changed from that of a man and let him be given the mind of an animal, till seven times pass by for him.
17	By decree of the watchers is the sentence, and by word of the holy ones is the decision, in order that those living may know that the Most High is ruling over the kingdom of men; and to whom He wishes, He gives it, and the lowest of men He sets over it.’	The sentence is by the decree of the watchers, the decision by the word of the holy ones, to the end that the living may know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will and sets over it the lowliest of men.’	“’The decision is announced by messengers, the holy ones declare the verdict, so that the living may know that the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes and sets over them the lowliest of people.’
18	This dream I, King Nebuchadnezzar, have seen; and you, Belteshazzar, must declare its interpretation, inasmuch as all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known to me the interpretation. And you are able, for the Spirit of the holy gods is in you.”	This dream I, King Nebuchadnezzar, saw. And you, O Belteshazzar, tell me the interpretation, because all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known to me the interpretation, but you are able, for the spirit of the holy gods is in you.”	“This is the dream that I, King Nebuchadnezzar, had. Now, Belteshazzar, tell me what it means, for none of the wise men in my kingdom can interpret it for me. But you can, because the spirit of the holy gods is in you.”
19	Then Daniel, of whom his name is Belteshazzar, was dismayed for one moment, and his thoughts disturbed him. The king answered and said, “Belteshazzar, the dream and its interpretation, do not let it trouble you.” Belteshazzar answered and said, “My lord, the dream, be for those hating you, and its interpretation for your enemies!”	Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was dismayed for a while, and his thoughts alarmed him. The king answered and said, “Belteshazzar, let not the dream or the interpretation alarm you.” Belteshazzar answered and said, “My lord, may the dream be for those who hate you and its interpretation for your enemies!	Then Daniel (also called Belteshazzar) was greatly perplexed for a time, and his thoughts terrified him. So the king said, “Belteshazzar, do not let the dream or its meaning alarm you.” Belteshazzar answered, “My lord, if only the dream applied to your enemies and its meaning to your adversaries!
20	The tree that you saw, which grew large and became strong, and whose height reached to the heavens, and in view of all the earth,	The tree you saw, which grew and became strong, so that its top reached to heaven, and it was visible to the end of the whole earth,	The tree you saw, which grew large and strong, with its top touching the sky, visible to the whole earth,
21	and whose leaves were lovely, and its fruit abundant, and food for all was in it, under which dwelt the beasts of the field, and in whose branches the birds of the heavens dwelt—	whose leaves were beautiful and its fruit abundant, and in which was food for all, under which beasts of the field found shade, and in whose branches the birds of the heavens lived—	with beautiful leaves and abundant fruit, providing food for all, giving shelter to the wild animals, and having nesting places in its branches for the birds—
22	it is you, O king, who have grown great and become strong; for your greatness has grown great, and it reaches to the heavens, and your dominion to the end of the earth.	it is you, O king, who have grown and become strong. Your greatness has grown and reaches to heaven, and your dominion to the ends of the earth.	Your Majesty, you are that tree! You have become great and strong; your greatness has grown until it reaches the sky, and your dominion extends to distant parts of the earth.
23	In that the king saw a watcher and a holy one coming down from heaven and saying, ‘Chop down the tree and destroy it, but its stump and roots leave in the earth, with a band that is of iron and bronze, in the tender grass that is of the field; and with the dew of heaven let it be wet, and with the beasts of the field let his portion be, until that seven times should pass over him!’	And because the king saw a watcher, a holy one, coming down from heaven and saying, ‘Chop down the tree and destroy it, but leave the stump of its roots in the earth, bound with a band of iron and bronze, in the tender grass of the field, and let him be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts of the field, till seven periods of time pass over him,’	“Your Majesty saw a holy one, a messenger, coming down from heaven and saying, ‘Cut down the tree and destroy it, but leave the stump, bound with iron and bronze, in the grass of the field, while its roots remain in the ground. Let him be drenched with the dew of heaven; let him live with the wild animals, until seven times pass by for him.’
24	This is the interpretation, O king, and the decree of the Most High it is that has come upon my lord the king:	this is the interpretation, O king: It is a decree of the Most High, which has come upon my lord the king,	“This is the interpretation, Your Majesty, and this is the decree the Most High has issued against my lord the king:
25	That they shall drive you away from men, and with the beasts of the field shall be your dwelling; and they shall make you eat grass like oxen, and from the dew of heaven they shall wet you; and seven times shall pass over you, until that you come to know that the Most High is ruling over the kingdom of men, and to whom that, He chooses He gives it.	that you shall be driven from among men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field. You shall be made to eat grass like an ox, and you shall be wet with the dew of heaven, and seven periods of time shall pass over you, till you know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will.	You will be driven away from people and will live with the wild animals; you will eat grass like the ox and be drenched with the dew of heaven. Seven times will pass by for you until you acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes.
26	And as they commanded to leave the stump and its roots for the tree, your kingdom will be assured to you from when you come to know that Heaven is ruling.	And as it was commanded to leave the stump of the roots of the tree, your kingdom shall be confirmed for you from the time that you know that Heaven rules.	The command to leave the stump of the tree with its roots means that your kingdom will be restored to you when you acknowledge that Heaven rules.
27	Therefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to you; and may you break off your sins with righteousness, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor, that there may be a lengthening of your prosperity.”	Therefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to you: break off your sins by practicing righteousness, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the oppressed, that there may perhaps be a lengthening of your prosperity.”	Therefore, Your Majesty, be pleased to accept my advice: Renounce your sins by doing what is right, and your wickedness by being kind to the oppressed. It may be that then your prosperity will continue.”
28	This all came upon Nebuchadnezzar the king.	All this came upon King Nebuchadnezzar.	All this happened to King Nebuchadnezzar.
29	At the end of twelve months, he was walking about the palace of the kingdom of Babylon.	At the end of twelve months he was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon,	Twelve months later, as the king was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon,
30	The king answered and said, “Is not this the great Babylon, which I myself have built as a house for the kingdom by the might of my power and for the honor of my majesty?”	and the king answered and said, “Is not this great Babylon, which I have built by my mighty power as a royal residence and for the glory of my majesty?”	he said, “Is not this the great Babylon I have built as the royal residence, by my mighty power and for the glory of my majesty?”
31	The words still in the mouth of the king, a voice from heaven fell: “To you it is spoken, Nebuchadnezzar the king: The kingdom has passed away from you!	While the words were still in the king’s mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, “O King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: The kingdom has departed from you,	Even as the words were on his lips, a voice came from heaven, “This is what is decreed for you, King Nebuchadnezzar: Your royal authority has been taken from you.
32	And they shall drive you away from men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field; they shall make you eat you grass like oxen, and seven times shall pass over you, until when you come to know that the Most High is ruling over the kingdom of man, and to whom that He chooses, He gives it.”	and you shall be driven from among men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field. And you shall be made to eat grass like an ox, and seven periods of time shall pass over you, until you know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will.”	You will be driven away from people and will live with the wild animals; you will eat grass like the ox. Seven times will pass by for you until you acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes.”
33	At that moment the word was fulfilled concerning Nebuchadnezzar, and he was driven from men, and he ate grass like oxen, and with the dew of heaven his body became wet, until his hair had grown as eagles, and his nails as birds.	Immediately the word was fulfilled against Nebuchadnezzar. He was driven from among men and ate grass like an ox, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven till his hair grew as long as eagles’ feathers, and his nails were like birds’ claws.	Immediately what had been said about Nebuchadnezzar was fulfilled. He was driven away from people and ate grass like the ox. His body was drenched with the dew of heaven until his hair grew like the feathers of an eagle and his nails like the claws of a bird.
34	And at the end of the days, I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to the heavens, and my understanding returned to me, and to the Most High I offered blessing, and to the One Living forever I gave praise and honor: “For His dominion is a dominion everlasting, and His kingdom is from generation to generation;	At the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my reason returned to me, and I blessed the Most High, and praised and honored him who lives forever, for his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom endures from generation to generation;	At the end of that time, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes toward heaven, and my sanity was restored. Then I praised the Most High; I honored and glorified him who lives forever. His dominion is an eternal dominion; his kingdom endures from generation to generation.
35	and all those dwelling in the earth are regarded as nothing, and He does according to His will among the host of the heaven and those dwelling in the earth; and there is no one who can strike on His hand or say to Him, ‘What have You done?’”	all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and he does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, “What have you done?”	All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing. He does as he pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back his hand or say to him: “What have you done?”
36	At that time my reason returned to me, and for the glory of my kingdom, my honor and splendor returned to me; and my counselors and nobles sought for me, and to my kingdom I was restored, and surpassing greatness was added to me.	At the same time my reason returned to me, and for the glory of my kingdom, my majesty and splendor returned to me. My counselors and my lords sought me, and I was established in my kingdom, and still more greatness was added to me.	At the same time that my sanity was restored, my honor and splendor were returned to me for the glory of my kingdom. My advisers and nobles sought me out, and I was restored to my throne and became even greater than before.
37	Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, for whom all His works are true, and His ways justice, and those who walk about in pride, He is able to bring low.	Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, for all his works are right and his ways are just; and those who walk in pride he is able to humble.	Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and exalt and glorify the King of heaven, because everything he does is right and all his ways are just. And those who walk in pride he is able to humble.
