2	And Stephen declared: “Brothers and fathers, listen to me! The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham while he was still in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran,	And Stephen said: “Brothers and fathers, hear me. 3	and told him, ‘Leave your country and your kindred and go to the land I will show you.’	and said to him, ‘Go out from your land and from your kindred and go into the land that I will show you.’	Leave your country and your people,’ God said, ‘and go to the land I will show you.’
4	So Abraham left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Haran. After his father died, God brought him out of that place and into this land where you are now living.	Then he went out from the land of the Chaldeans and lived in Haran. And after his father died, God removed him from there into this land in which you are now living.	“So he left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Harran. After the death of his father, God sent him to this land where you are now living.
5	He gave him no inheritance here, not even a foot of ground. But God promised to give possession of the land to Abraham and his descendants, even though he did not yet have a child.	Yet he gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot’s length, but promised to give it to him as a possession and to his offspring after him, though he had no child.	He gave him no inheritance here, not even enough ground to set his foot on. But God promised him that he and his descendants after him would possess the land, even though at that time Abraham had no child.
6	God told him that his descendants would be foreigners in a strange land, and that they would be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years.	And God spoke to this effect—that his offspring would be sojourners in a land belonging to others, who would enslave them and afflict them four hundred years.	God spoke to him in this way: ‘For four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated.
7	‘But I will punish the nation that enslaves them,’ God said, ‘and afterward they will come forth and worship Me in this place.’	‘But I will judge the nation that they serve,’ said God, ‘and after that they shall come out and worship me in this place.’	But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves,’ God said, ‘and afterward they will come out of that country and worship me in this place.’
8	Then God gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision, and Abraham became the father of Isaac and circumcised him on the eighth day. And Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs.	And he gave him the covenant of circumcision. And so Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day, and Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs.	Then he gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision. And Abraham became the father of Isaac and circumcised him eight days after his birth. Later Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs.

10	and rescued him from all his troubles. 19	He exploited our people and oppressed our fathers, forcing them to abandon their infants so they would die.	He dealt shrewdly with our race and forced our fathers to expose their infants, so that they would not be kept alive.	He dealt treacherously with our people and oppressed our ancestors by forcing them to throw out their newborn babies so that they would die.
20	At that time Moses was born, and he was beautiful in the sight of God. For three months he was nurtured in his father’s house.	At this time Moses was born; and he was beautiful in God’s sight. And he was brought up for three months in his father’s house,	“At that time Moses was born, and he was no ordinary child. For three months he was cared for by his family.

25	He assumed his brothers would understand that God was using him to deliver them, but they did not. 26	The next day he came upon two Israelites who were fighting, and he tried to reconcile them, saying, ‘Men, you are brothers. Why are you mistreating each other?’	And on the following day he appeared to them as they were quarreling and tried to reconcile them, saying, ‘Men, you are brothers. Why do you wrong each other?’	The next day Moses came upon two Israelites who were fighting. He tried to reconcile them by saying, ‘Men, you are brothers; why do you want to hurt each other?’
27	But the man who was abusing his neighbor pushed Moses aside and said, ‘Who made you ruler and judge over us?	But the man who was wronging his neighbor thrust him aside, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge over us?	“But the man who was mistreating the other pushed Moses aside and said, ‘Who made you ruler and judge over us?
28	Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’	Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’	Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’
29	At this remark, Moses fled to the land of Midian, where he lived as a foreigner and had two sons.	At this retort Moses fled and became an exile in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons. 34	I have indeed seen the oppression of My people in Egypt. I have heard their groaning and have come down to deliver them. Now come, I will send you back to Egypt.’	I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their groaning, and I have come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send you to Egypt.’	I have indeed seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their groaning and have come down to set them free. Now come, I will send you back to Egypt.’
35	This Moses, whom they had rejected with the words, ‘Who made you ruler and judge?’ is the one whom God sent to be their ruler and redeemer through the angel who appeared to him in the bush.	“This Moses, whom they rejected, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’—this man God sent as both ruler and redeemer by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.	“This is the same Moses they had rejected with the words, ‘Who made you ruler and judge?’ He was sent to be their ruler and deliverer by God himself, through the angel who appeared to him in the bush.
36	He led them out and performed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, at the Red Sea, and for forty years in the wilderness.	This man led them out, performing wonders and signs in Egypt and at the Red Sea and in the wilderness for forty years.	He led them out of Egypt and performed wonders and signs in Egypt, at the Red Sea and for forty years in the wilderness.
37	This is the same Moses who told the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers.’	This is the Moses who said to the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers.’	“This is the Moses who told the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your own people.’
38	He was in the assembly in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our fathers. And he received living words to pass on to us.	This is the one who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and with our fathers. He received living oracles to give to us.	He was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors; and he received living words to pass on to us.
39	But our fathers refused to obey him. Instead, they rejected him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt. 41	At that time they made a calf and offered a sacrifice to the idol, rejoicing in the works of their hands. They brought sacrifices to it and reveled in what their own hands had made.
42	But God turned away from them and gave them over to the worship of the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: ‘Did you bring Me sacrifices and offerings forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel? 43	You have taken along the tabernacle of Molech and the star of your god Rephan, the idols you made to worship. Therefore I will send you into exile beyond Babylon.’	You took up the tent of Moloch and the star of your god Rephan, the images that you made to worship; and I will send you into exile beyond Babylon.’	You have taken up the tabernacle of Molek and the star of your god Rephan, the idols you made to worship. 44	Our fathers had the tabernacle of the Testimony with them in the wilderness. It was constructed exactly as God had directed Moses, according to the pattern he had seen.	“Our fathers had the tent of witness in the wilderness, just as he who spoke to Moses directed him to make it, according to the pattern that he had seen.	“Our ancestors had the tabernacle of the covenant law with them in the wilderness. It had been made as God directed Moses, according to the pattern he had seen.
45	And our fathers who received it brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations God drove out before them. What kind of house will you build for me? says the Lord. Or where will my resting place be?
50	Has not My hand made all these things?’	Did not my hand make all these things?’	Has not my hand made all these things?’
51	You stiff-necked people with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit, just as your fathers did.	“You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you.	“You stiff-necked people! Your hearts and ears are still uncircumcised. You are just like your ancestors: You always resist the Holy Spirit!
52	Which of the prophets did your fathers fail to persecute? They even killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One. And now you are His betrayers and murderers—	Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered,	Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him—
53	you who received the law ordained by angels, yet have not kept it.”	you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it.”	you who have received the law that was given through angels but have not obeyed it.”
54	On hearing this, the members of the Sanhedrin were enraged, and they gnashed their teeth at him.	Now when they heard these things they were enraged, and they ground their teeth at him.	When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him.
55	But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked intently into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.	But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. Then he fell on his knees and cried out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he had said this, he fell asleep.
