2	And he began to speak: “Men, brothers and fathers, listen! The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham, being in Mesopotamia before his dwelling in Haran,	And Stephen said: “Brothers and fathers, hear me. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran,	To this he replied: “Brothers and fathers, listen to me! The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham while he was still in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Harran.
3	and He said to him, ‘Go out of your country and from your kindred, and come into the land that I will show to you.’	and said to him, ‘Go out from your land and from your kindred and go into the land that I will show you.’	Leave your country and your people,’ God said, ‘and go to the land I will show you.’
4	Then, having gone out from the land of the Chaldeans, he dwelt in Haran. And from there, after his father died, He transferred him into this land in which you⁺ now dwell.	Then he went out from the land of the Chaldeans and lived in Haran. And after his father died, God removed him from there into this land in which you are now living.	“So he left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Harran. After the death of his father, God sent him to this land where you are now living.
5	And He did not give to him an inheritance in it, not even the length of a foot; but He promised to give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him—there being to him no child.	Yet he gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot’s length, but promised to give it to him as a possession and to his offspring after him, though he had no child.	He gave him no inheritance here, not even enough ground to set his foot on. But God promised him that he and his descendants after him would possess the land, even though at that time Abraham had no child.
6	And God spoke thus, that his seed will be a sojourner in a strange land, and they will enslave it and will mistreat it four hundred years.	And God spoke to this effect—that his offspring would be sojourners in a land belonging to others, who would enslave them and afflict them four hundred years.	God spoke to him in this way: ‘For four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated.
7	‘And the nation to which they will be in bondage, I will judge,’ God said, ‘and after these things they will come out and will serve Me in this place.’	‘But I will judge the nation that they serve,’ said God, ‘and after that they shall come out and worship me in this place.’	But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves,’ God said, ‘and afterward they will come out of that country and worship me in this place.’
8	And He gave to him the covenant of circumcision; and thus he begat Isaac and circumcised him on the eighth day, and Isaac Jacob, and Jacob the twelve patriarchs.	And he gave him the covenant of circumcision. And so Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day, and Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs.	Then he gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision. And Abraham became the father of Isaac and circumcised him eight days after his birth. Later Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs.
9	And the patriarchs, having envied Joseph, sold him into Egypt. And God was with him,	“And the patriarchs, jealous of Joseph, sold him into Egypt; but God was with him	“Because the patriarchs were jealous of Joseph, they sold him as a slave into Egypt. But God was with him
10	and He rescued him out of all his tribulations, and He gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he appointed him ruler over Egypt and over all his house.	and rescued him out of all his afflictions and gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt, who made him ruler over Egypt and over all his household.	and rescued him from all his troubles. He gave Joseph wisdom and enabled him to gain the goodwill of Pharaoh king of Egypt. So Pharaoh made him ruler over Egypt and all his palace.
11	And there was a famine upon all Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction, and our fathers were not finding sustenance.	Now there came a famine throughout all Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction, and our fathers could find no food.	“Then a famine struck all Egypt and Canaan, bringing great suffering, and our ancestors could not find food.
12	Now Jacob, having heard there is grain in Egypt, sent forth our fathers first.	But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers on their first visit.	When Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our forefathers on their first visit.
13	And on the second time, Joseph was made known to his brothers, and the family of Joseph became known to Pharaoh.	And on the second visit Joseph made himself known to his brothers, and Joseph’s family became known to Pharaoh.	On their second visit, Joseph told his brothers who he was, and Pharaoh learned about Joseph’s family.
14	And Joseph, having sent, called for his father Jacob and all his kindred, seventy-five souls in all.	And Joseph sent and summoned Jacob his father and all his kindred, seventy-five persons in all.	After this, Joseph sent for his father Jacob and his whole family, seventy-five in all.
15	And Jacob went down into Egypt, and he died—he and our fathers,	And Jacob went down into Egypt, and he died, he and our fathers,	Then Jacob went down to Egypt, where he and our ancestors died.
16	and they were carried over into Shechem and were placed in the tomb that Abraham bought for a price of silver from the sons of Hamor in Shechem.	and they were carried back to Shechem and laid in the tomb that Abraham had bought for a sum of silver from the sons of Hamor in Shechem.	Their bodies were brought back to Shechem and placed in the tomb that Abraham had bought from the sons of Hamor at Shechem for a certain sum of money.
17	Now as the time of the promise that God swore to Abraham was drawing near, the people increased and multiplied in Egypt,	“But as the time of the promise drew near, which God had granted to Abraham, the people increased and multiplied in Egypt	“As the time drew near for God to fulfill his promise to Abraham, the number of our people in Egypt had greatly increased.
18	until there arose another king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph.	until there arose over Egypt another king who did not know Joseph.	Then ‘a new king, to whom Joseph meant nothing, came to power in Egypt.’
19	Having dealt treacherously with our kindred, this one mistreated our fathers, making them expose their infants, that they would not live.	He dealt shrewdly with our race and forced our fathers to expose their infants, so that they would not be kept alive.	He dealt treacherously with our people and oppressed our ancestors by forcing them to throw out their newborn babies so that they would die.
20	In that time Moses was born (and he was beautiful to God), who was brought up three months in the house of his father.	At this time Moses was born; and he was beautiful in God’s sight. And he was brought up for three months in his father’s house,	“At that time Moses was born, and he was no ordinary child. For three months he was cared for by his family.
21	And on his having been exposed, the daughter of Pharaoh took him up and brought him up for herself for a son.	and when he was exposed, Pharaoh’s daughter adopted him and brought him up as her own son.	When he was placed outside, Pharaoh’s daughter took him and brought him up as her own son.
22	And Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was mighty in his words and deeds.	And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was mighty in his words and deeds.	Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was powerful in speech and action.
23	Now when a period of forty years was fulfilled to him, it came into his heart to visit his brothers, the sons of Israel.	“When he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brothers, the children of Israel.	“When Moses was forty years old, he decided to visit his own people, the Israelites.
24	And having seen a certain one being wronged, he defended and did vengeance for the one being oppressed, having struck down the Egyptian.	And seeing one of them being wronged, he defended the oppressed man and avenged him by striking down the Egyptian.	He saw one of them being mistreated by an Egyptian, so he went to his defense and avenged him by killing the Egyptian.
25	And he was supposing his brothers to understand that God is giving them salvation by his hand, but they did not understand.	He supposed that his brothers would understand that God was giving them salvation by his hand, but they did not understand.	Moses thought that his own people would realize that God was using him to rescue them, but they did not.
26	And on the following day, he appeared to those who were quarreling and urged them to peace, having said, ‘Men, you⁺ are brothers. Why do you⁺ wrong one another?’	And on the following day he appeared to them as they were quarreling and tried to reconcile them, saying, ‘Men, you are brothers. Why do you wrong each other?’	The next day Moses came upon two Israelites who were fighting. He tried to reconcile them by saying, ‘Men, you are brothers; why do you want to hurt each other?’
27	But the one mistreating the neighbor pushed him away, having said, ‘Who appointed you ruler and judge over us?	But the man who was wronging his neighbor thrust him aside, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge over us?	“But the man who was mistreating the other pushed Moses aside and said, ‘Who made you ruler and judge over us?
28	Do you want to kill me the same way you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’	Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’	Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’
29	Now at this word Moses fled, and he became a sojourner in the land of Midian, where he begat two sons.	At this retort Moses fled and became an exile in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons.	When Moses heard this, he fled to Midian, where he settled as a foreigner and had two sons.
30	And forty years having been fulfilled, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire of a bush.	“Now when forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush.	“After forty years had passed, an angel appeared to Moses in the flames of a burning bush in the desert near Mount Sinai.
31	And Moses, having seen, marveled at the vision. And on his coming near to behold, there was the voice of the Lord:	When Moses saw it, he was amazed at the sight, and as he drew near to look, there came the voice of the Lord:	When he saw this, he was amazed at the sight. As he went over to get a closer look, he heard the Lord say:
32	‘I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob.’ And Moses, having become terrified, did not dare to look.	‘I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob.’ And Moses trembled and did not dare to look.	I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.’ Moses trembled with fear and did not dare to look.
33	And the Lord said to him, ‘Loose the sandal of your feet, for the place on which you stand is holy ground.	Then the Lord said to him, ‘Take off the sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.	“Then the Lord said to him, ‘Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.
34	I have surely seen the oppression of My people in Egypt, and I heard their groans, and I came down to deliver them. And now come, I will send you to Egypt.’	I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their groaning, and I have come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send you to Egypt.’	I have indeed seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their groaning and have come down to set them free. Now come, I will send you back to Egypt.’
35	This Moses, whom they rejected, having said, ‘Who appointed you ruler and judge?’—this one whom God sent as both ruler and redeemer by the hand of the angel having appeared to him in the bush—	“This Moses, whom they rejected, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’—this man God sent as both ruler and redeemer by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.	“This is the same Moses they had rejected with the words, ‘Who made you ruler and judge?’ He was sent to be their ruler and deliverer by God himself, through the angel who appeared to him in the bush.
36	this one led them out, having done wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness forty years.	This man led them out, performing wonders and signs in Egypt and at the Red Sea and in the wilderness for forty years.	He led them out of Egypt and performed wonders and signs in Egypt, at the Red Sea and for forty years in the wilderness.
37	This is the Moses having said to the sons of Israel, ‘God will raise up for you⁺ a prophet like me from among your⁺ brothers.’	This is the Moses who said to the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers.’	“This is the Moses who told the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your own people.’
38	This is the one having been in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel speaking to him in Mount Sinai, and with our fathers, who received living oracles to give to us,	This is the one who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and with our fathers. He received living oracles to give to us.	He was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors; and he received living words to pass on to us.
39	to whom our fathers were not willing to be obedient, but pushed away, and they turned back in their hearts to Egypt,	Our fathers refused to obey him, but thrust him aside, and in their hearts they turned to Egypt,	“But our ancestors refused to obey him. Instead, they rejected him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt.
40	having said to Aaron, ‘Make us gods who will go before us. As for this Moses, who brought us out from the land of Egypt, we do not know what happened to him.’	saying to Aaron, ‘Make for us gods who will go before us. As for this Moses who led us out from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’	They told Aaron, ‘Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who led us out of Egypt—we don’t know what has happened to him!’
41	And in those days they made a calf and offered a sacrifice to the idol, and they were rejoicing in the works of their hands.	And they made a calf in those days, and offered a sacrifice to the idol and were rejoicing in the works of their hands.	That was the time they made an idol in the form of a calf. They brought sacrifices to it and reveled in what their own hands had made.
42	But God turned away and delivered them to worship the host of heaven, as it has been written in the book of the prophets: ‘Did you⁺ offer slain beasts and sacrifices to Me forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?	But God turned away and gave them over to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: “‘Did you bring to me slain beasts and sacrifices, during the forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?	But God turned away from them and gave them over to the worship of the sun, moon and stars. This agrees with what is written in the book of the prophets: “’Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings forty years in the wilderness, people of Israel?
43	And you⁺ took up the tabernacle of Molech and the star of your⁺ god Rephan, the images that you⁺ made to worship them; and I will remove you⁺ beyond Babylon.’	You took up the tent of Moloch and the star of your god Rephan, the images that you made to worship; and I will send you into exile beyond Babylon.’	You have taken up the tabernacle of Molek and the star of your god Rephan, the idols you made to worship. Therefore I will send you into exile’ beyond Babylon.
44	The tabernacle of the Testimony was with our fathers in the wilderness, just as the One speaking to Moses had commanded him to make it according to the pattern that he had seen,	“Our fathers had the tent of witness in the wilderness, just as he who spoke to Moses directed him to make it, according to the pattern that he had seen.	“Our ancestors had the tabernacle of the covenant law with them in the wilderness. It had been made as God directed Moses, according to the pattern he had seen.
45	and which, having received it by succession, our fathers brought in with Joshua in taking possession of the nations whom God drove out from the face of our fathers, until the days of David,	Our fathers in turn brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations that God drove out before our fathers. So it was until the days of David,	After receiving the tabernacle, our ancestors under Joshua brought it with them when they took the land from the nations God drove out before them. It remained in the land until the time of David,
46	who found favor before God and asked to find a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.	who found favor in the sight of God and asked to find a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.	who enjoyed God’s favor and asked that he might provide a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.
47	But Solomon built for Him a house.	But it was Solomon who built a house for him.	But it was Solomon who built a house for him.
48	But the Most High does not dwell in hand-made houses. As the prophet says:	Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made by hands, as the prophet says,	“However, the Most High does not live in houses made by human hands. As the prophet says:
49	‘Heaven is unto Me a throne, and the earth a footstool for My feet. What kind of house will you⁺ build for Me, says the Lord, or what is the place of My rest?	“‘Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord, or what is the place of my rest?	“’Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house will you build for me? says the Lord. Or where will my resting place be?
50	Did not My hand make all these things?’	Did not my hand make all these things?’	Has not my hand made all these things?’
51	You⁺ stiff-necked and uncircumcised in hearts and ears! You⁺ always resist the Holy Spirit! As did your⁺ fathers, also you⁺ do.	“You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you.	“You stiff-necked people! Your hearts and ears are still uncircumcised. You are just like your ancestors: You always resist the Holy Spirit!
52	Which of the prophets did your⁺ fathers not persecute? And they killed those having foretold about the coming of the Righteous One, of whom you⁺ have now become betrayers and murderers,	Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered,	Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him—
53	you who received the law by the ordination of angels, and did not keep it.”	you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it.”	you who have received the law that was given through angels but have not obeyed it.”
54	Now hearing these things, they were cut in their hearts, and they were gnashing the teeth at him.	Now when they heard these things they were enraged, and they ground their teeth at him.	When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him.
55	But being full of the Holy Spirit, having looked intently into heaven, he saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God,	But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.	But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.
56	and he said, “Behold, I see the heavens having been opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”	And he said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”	“Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”
57	And having cried out in a loud voice, they held their ears and rushed upon him with one accord,	But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears and rushed together at him.	At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him,
58	and having cast him out of the city, they began to stone him. And the witnesses laid aside their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.	Then they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.	dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul.
59	And as they were stoning Stephen, he was calling out and saying, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”	And as they were stoning Stephen, he called out, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”	While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”
60	And having fallen on his knees, he cried out in a loud voice, “Lord, do not place this sin on them.” And having said this, he fell asleep.	And falling to his knees he cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.	Then he fell on his knees and cried out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he had said this, he fell asleep.
