1 And it was after this that Absalom son of David had a lovely sister, and her name was Tamar. And Amnon son of David loved her. Now Absalom, David’s son, had a beautiful sister, whose name was Tamar. And after a time Amnon, David’s son, loved her. In the course of time, Amnon son of David fell in love with Tamar, the beautiful sister of Absalom son of David.
2 And Amnon was so distressed that he became sick over Tamar his sister, for she was a virgin, and it was improper in the eyes of Amnon to do anything to her. And Amnon was so tormented that he made himself ill because of his sister Tamar, for she was a virgin, and it seemed impossible to Amnon to do anything to her. Amnon became so obsessed with his sister Tamar that he made himself ill. She was a virgin, and it seemed impossible for him to do anything to her.
3 And Amnon had a friend, and his name was Jonadab son of Shimeah, brother of David. And Jonadab was a very shrewd man. But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David’s brother. And Jonadab was a very crafty man. Now Amnon had an adviser named Jonadab son of Shimeah, David’s brother. Jonadab was a very shrewd man.
4 And he said to him, “Why are you so depressed, son of the king, morning after morning? Will you not tell me?” And Amnon said to him, “I am loving Tamar, sister of Absalom my brother.” And he said to him, “O son of the king, why are you so haggard morning after morning? Will you not tell me?” Amnon said to him, “I love Tamar, my brother Absalom’s sister.” He asked Amnon, “Why do you, the king’s son, look so haggard morning after morning? Won’t you tell me?” Amnon said to him, “I’m in love with Tamar, my brother Absalom’s sister.”
5 And Jonadab said to him, “Lie down on your bed and pretend to be ill. When your father comes to see you, say to him, ‘Please let Tamar my sister come and give me food, and prepare the food in my sight, so that I may see and eat it from her hand.’” Jonadab said to him, “Lie down on your bed and pretend to be ill. And when your father comes to see you, say to him, ‘Let my sister Tamar come and give me bread to eat, and prepare the food in my sight, that I may see it and eat it from her hand.’” “Go to bed and pretend to be ill,” Jonadab said. “When your father comes to see you, say to him, ‘I would like my sister Tamar to come and give me something to eat. Let her prepare the food in my sight so I may watch her and then eat it from her hand.’”
6 And Amnon lay down and pretended to be ill, and the king came to see him, and Amnon said to the king, “Please let Tamar my sister come and make for me in my sight two cakes, that I may eat from her hand.” So Amnon lay down and pretended to be ill. And when the king came to see him, Amnon said to the king, “Please let my sister Tamar come and make a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat from her hand.” So Amnon lay down and pretended to be ill. When the king came to see him, Amnon said to him, “I would like my sister Tamar to come and make some special bread in my sight, so I may eat from her hand.”
7 And David sent to Tamar, to the house, saying, “Go now to the house of Amnon, to your brother, and prepare for him food.” Then David sent home to Tamar, saying, “Go to your brother Amnon’s house and prepare food for him.” David sent word to Tamar at the palace: “Go to the house of your brother Amnon and prepare some food for him.”
8 And Tamar went to the house of Amnon her brother, and he was lying down. And she took the dough and kneaded it and made cakes in his eyes, and she baked the cakes. So Tamar went to her brother Amnon’s house, where he was lying down. And she took dough and kneaded it and made cakes in his sight and baked the cakes. So Tamar went to the house of her brother Amnon, who was lying down. She took some dough, kneaded it, made the bread in his sight and baked it.
9 And she took the pan and placed them out before his face, and he refused to eat. And Amnon said, “Have every man go out from me.” And they went out, every man from him. And she took the pan and emptied it out before him, but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, “Send out everyone from me.” So everyone went out from him. Then she took the pan and served him the bread, but he refused to eat. “Send everyone out of here,” Amnon said. So everyone left him.
10 And Amnon said to Tamar, “Bring the food into the bedroom, that I may eat from your hand.” And Tamar took the cakes that she had made, and she brought them to Amnon her brother in the bedroom. Then Amnon said to Tamar, “Bring the food into the chamber, that I may eat from your hand.” And Tamar took the cakes she had made and brought them into the chamber to Amnon her brother. Then Amnon said to Tamar, “Bring the food here into my bedroom so I may eat from your hand.” And Tamar took the bread she had prepared and brought it to her brother Amnon in his bedroom.
11 And she had brought them to him to eat, and he took hold of her and said to her, “Come, lie with me, my sister.” But when she brought them near him to eat, he took hold of her and said to her, “Come, lie with me, my sister.” But when she took it to him to eat, he grabbed her and said, “Come to bed with me, my sister.”
12 And she answered him, “No, my brother, do not force me, for such should not be done in Israel. Do not do this disgraceful thing. She answered him, “No, my brother, do not violate me, for such a thing is not done in Israel; do not do this outrageous thing. “No, my brother!” she said to him. “Don’t force me! Such a thing should not be done in Israel! Don’t do this wicked thing.
13 And I, where could I take my shame? And as for you, you would be like one of the fools in Israel. And now speak, please, to the king, for he will not withhold me from you.” As for me, where could I carry my shame? And as for you, you would be as one of the outrageous fools in Israel. Now therefore, please speak to the king, for he will not withhold me from you.” What about me? Where could I get rid of my disgrace? And what about you? You would be like one of the wicked fools in Israel. Please speak to the king; he will not keep me from being married to you.”
14 And he would not listen to her voice, and he was stronger than she, and he forced her and lay with her. But he would not listen to her, and being stronger than she, he violated her and lay with her. But he refused to listen to her, and since he was stronger than she, he raped her.
15 And Amnon hated her with exceedingly great hatred, so that greater the hatred was with which he hated her than the love with which he had loved her. And Amnon said to her, “Arise, be gone.” Then Amnon hated her with very great hatred, so that the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her. And Amnon said to her, “Get up! Go!” Then Amnon hated her with intense hatred. In fact, he hated her more than he had loved her. Amnon said to her, “Get up and get out!”
16 And she said to him, “No, because this is greater evil than the other that you did to me—sending me away.” And he would not listen to her. But she said to him, “No, my brother, for this wrong in sending me away is greater than the other that you did to me.” But he would not listen to her. “No!” she said to him. “Sending me away would be a greater wrong than what you have already done to me.” But he refused to listen to her.
17 And he called his servant who attended him, and he said, “Send away, please, this woman from me outside, and bolt the door behind her.” He called the young man who served him and said, “Put this woman out of my presence and bolt the door after her.” He called his personal servant and said, “Get this woman out of my sight and bolt the door after her.”
18 And she had on a tunic of many colors, for such apparel virgin daughters of the king wore. And his servant put her outside, and he bolted the door behind her. Now she was wearing a long robe with sleeves, for thus were the virgin daughters of the king dressed. So his servant put her out and bolted the door after her. So his servant put her out and bolted the door after her. She was wearing an ornate robe, for this was the kind of garment the virgin daughters of the king wore.
19 And Tamar put ashes on her head, and she tore her tunic of many colors that was on her, and she put her hand on her head and went, going on and crying bitterly. And Tamar put ashes on her head and tore the long robe that she wore. And she laid her hand on her head and went away, crying aloud as she went. Tamar put ashes on her head and tore the ornate robe she was wearing. She put her hands on her head and went away, weeping aloud as she went.
20 And Absalom her brother said to her, “Amnon your brother has been with you, and my sister, keep silent. He is your brother; do not put this thing to heart.” And Tamar was desolate and remained in the house of Absalom her brother. And her brother Absalom said to her, “Has Amnon your brother been with you? Now hold your peace, my sister. He is your brother; do not take this to heart.” So Tamar lived, a desolate woman, in her brother Absalom’s house. Her brother Absalom said to her, “Has that Amnon, your brother, been with you? Be quiet for now, my sister; he is your brother. Don’t take this thing to heart.” And Tamar lived in her brother Absalom’s house, a desolate woman.
21 And King David heard of all these things, and he was very hot. When King David heard of all these things, he was very angry. When King David heard all this, he was furious.
22 And Absalom did not speak to Amnon bad or good, for Absalom hated Amnon, upon the matter that he had disgraced Tamar his sister. But Absalom spoke to Amnon neither good nor bad, for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had violated his sister Tamar. And Absalom never said a word to Amnon, either good or bad; he hated Amnon because he had disgraced his sister Tamar.
23 And it came to pass after two full years, that Absalom had sheepshearers at Baal-hazor, which is near Ephraim. And Absalom invited all the sons of the king. After two full years Absalom had sheepshearers at Baal-hazor, which is near Ephraim, and Absalom invited all the king’s sons. Two years later, when Absalom’s sheepshearers were at Baal Hazor near the border of Ephraim, he invited all the king’s sons to come there.
24 And Absalom came to the king and said, “Behold, now, your servant has sheepshearers. Let the king go, please, and his servants, with your servant.” And Absalom came to the king and said, “Behold, your servant has sheepshearers. Please let the king and his servants go with your servant.” Absalom went to the king and said, “Your servant has had shearers come. Will the king and his attendants please join me?”
25 And the king said to Absalom, “No, my son, let us not all go now, and we will not be a burden to you.” And he urged him, and he would not go, and he blessed him. But the king said to Absalom, “No, my son, let us not all go, lest we be burdensome to you.” He pressed him, but he would not go but gave him his blessing. “No, my son,” the king replied. “All of us should not go; we would only be a burden to you.” Although Absalom urged him, he still refused to go but gave him his blessing.
26 And Absalom said, “If not, please let Amnon my brother go with us.” And the king said to him, “Why should he go with you?” Then Absalom said, “If not, please let my brother Amnon go with us.” And the king said to him, “Why should he go with you?” Then Absalom said, “If not, please let my brother Amnon come with us.” The king asked him, “Why should he go with you?”
27 And Absalom urged him, and he sent with him Amnon and all the sons of the king. But Absalom pressed him until he let Amnon and all the king’s sons go with him. But Absalom urged him, so he sent with him Amnon and the rest of the king’s sons.
28 And Absalom had commanded his young men, saying, “Watch now, when the heart of Amnon is merry with wine, and I say to you⁺, strike Amnon and kill him. Do not be afraid. Is it not that I have commanded you⁺? Be courageous and be sons of valor.” Then Absalom commanded his servants, “Mark when Amnon’s heart is merry with wine, and when I say to you, ‘Strike Amnon,’ then kill him. Do not fear; have I not commanded you? Be courageous and be valiant.” Absalom ordered his men, “Listen! When Amnon is in high spirits from drinking wine and I say to you, ‘Strike Amnon down,’ then kill him. Don’t be afraid. Haven’t I given you this order? Be strong and brave.”
29 And the servants of Absalom did to Amnon as Absalom had commanded, and all the sons of the king arose, and they rode each one on his mule, and they fled. So the servants of Absalom did to Amnon as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king’s sons arose, and each mounted his mule and fled. So Absalom’s men did to Amnon what Absalom had ordered. Then all the king’s sons got up, mounted their mules and fled.
30 And it came to pass, they were on the way, that news came to David, saying, “Absalom has killed all the sons of the king, and not one of them is left.” While they were on the way, news came to David, “Absalom has struck down all the king’s sons, and not one of them is left.” While they were on their way, the report came to David: “Absalom has struck down all the king’s sons; not one of them is left.”
31 And the king arose and tore his garments, and he laid down on the ground. And all his servants stood by, with their clothes torn. Then the king arose and tore his garments and lay on the earth. And all his servants who were standing by tore their garments. The king stood up, tore his clothes and lay down on the ground; and all his attendants stood by with their clothes torn.
32 And Jonadab son of Shimeah, brother of David, answered and said, “Let not my lord say all the young men, the sons of the king, they have killed. For Amnon alone is dead. For by the mouth of Absalom this has been determined from the day that he violated Tamar his sister. But Jonadab the son of Shimeah, David’s brother, said, “Let not my lord suppose that they have killed all the young men, the king’s sons, for Amnon alone is dead. For by the command of Absalom this has been determined from the day he violated his sister Tamar. But Jonadab son of Shimeah, David’s brother, said, “My lord should not think that they killed all the princes; only Amnon is dead. This has been Absalom’s express intention ever since the day Amnon raped his sister Tamar.
33 And now let not my lord the king put to his heart the thing, to think that all the sons of the king are dead. For Amnon alone is dead.” Now therefore let not my lord the king so take it to heart as to suppose that all the king’s sons are dead, for Amnon alone is dead.” My lord the king should not be concerned about the report that all the king’s sons are dead. Only Amnon is dead.”
34 And Absalom fled, and the young man who was watching lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold, many people were coming from the road west of him on the side of the hill. And the watchman went and reported to the king, “I see men coming from the direction of Horonaim, along the side of the hill. But Absalom fled. And the young man who kept the watch lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, many people were coming from the road behind him by the side of the mountain. Meanwhile, Absalom had fled. Now the man standing watch looked up and saw many people on the road west of him, coming down the side of the hill. The watchman went and told the king, “I see men in the direction of Horonaim, on the side of the hill.”
35 And Jonadab said to the king, “Behold, the sons of the king have come. As spoke your servant, so it is.” And Jonadab said to the king, “Behold, the king’s sons have come; as your servant said, so it has come about.” Jonadab said to the king, “See, the king’s sons have come; it has happened just as your servant said.”
36 And it came to pass, as he finished speaking, that indeed the sons of the king came, and they lifted up their voices and wept, and the king and all his servants wept, weeping very bitterly. And as soon as he had finished speaking, behold, the king’s sons came and lifted up their voice and wept. And the king also and all his servants wept very bitterly. As he finished speaking, the king’s sons came in, wailing loudly. The king, too, and all his attendants wept very bitterly.
37 And Absalom fled and went to Talmai son of Ammihud king of Geshur. And he mourned for his son all the days. But Absalom fled and went to Talmai the son of Ammihud, king of Geshur. And David mourned for his son day after day. Absalom fled and went to Talmai son of Ammihud, the king of Geshur. But King David mourned many days for his son.
38 And Absalom fled and went to Geshur, and he was there three years. So Absalom fled and went to Geshur, and was there three years. After Absalom fled and went to Geshur, he stayed there three years.
39 And king David longed to go to Absalom. For he had been comforted concerning Amnon, because he was dead. And the spirit of the king longed to go out to Absalom, because he was comforted about Amnon, since he was dead. And King David longed to go to Absalom, for he was consoled concerning Amnon’s death.
