1 And YHWH sent Nathan to David, and he came to him and said to him, “There were two men in one city—one rich and one poor. And the LORD sent Nathan to David. He came to him and said to him, “There were two men in a certain city, the one rich and the other poor. The LORD sent Nathan to David. When he came to him, he said, “There were two men in a certain town, one rich and the other poor.
2 The rich one had flocks and herds exceedingly many. The rich man had very many flocks and herds, The rich man had a very large number of sheep and cattle,
3 And the poor one had not anything, but if one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and kept alive. And it grew up with him and with his children together. Of his own food it ate, and from his own cup it drank, and in his bosom it lay, and it was to him like a daughter. but the poor man had nothing but one little ewe lamb, which he had bought. And he brought it up, and it grew up with him and with his children. It used to eat of his morsel and drink from his cup and lie in his arms, and it was like a daughter to him. but the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children. It shared his food, drank from his cup and even slept in his arms. It was like a daughter to him.
4 And a traveler came to the rich man, who refused to take from his own flock and from his own herd to prepare for the wayfaring man who had come to him. And he took the ewe lamb of the poor man and prepared it for the man who had come to him.” Now there came a traveler to the rich man, and he was unwilling to take one of his own flock or herd to prepare for the guest who had come to him, but he took the poor man’s lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him.” “Now a traveler came to the rich man, but the rich man refrained from taking one of his own sheep or cattle to prepare a meal for the traveler who had come to him. Instead, he took the ewe lamb that belonged to the poor man and prepared it for the one who had come to him.”
5 And the anger of David was kindled against the man greatly, and he said to Nathan, “As YHWH lives, surely shall die the man who has done this. Then David’s anger was greatly kindled against the man, and he said to Nathan, “As the LORD lives, the man who has done this deserves to die, David burned with anger against the man and said to Nathan, “As surely as the LORD lives, the man who did this must die!
6 And for the lamb he shall restore fourfold, on account that he did this thing, and because he pitied not.” and he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.” He must pay for that lamb four times over, because he did such a thing and had no pity.”
7 And Nathan said to David, “You are the man. Thus says YHWH, God of Israel, ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I snatched you up from the hand of Saul. Nathan said to David, “You are the man! Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul. Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man! This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul.
8 And I gave to you the house of your master and the wives of your master into your bosom, and I gave to you the house of Israel and Judah. And if that was too little, I would have given to you like them and like them. And I gave you your master’s house and your master’s wives into your arms and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah. And if this were too little, I would add to you as much more. I gave your master’s house to you, and your master’s wives into your arms. I gave you all Israel and Judah. And if all this had been too little, I would have given you even more.
9 Why have you despised the commandment of YHWH to do evil in His sight? You have struck Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and his wife you have taken to be your wife, and him have killed with the sword of the sons of Ammon. Why have you despised the word of the LORD, to do what is evil in his sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and have taken his wife to be your wife and have killed him with the sword of the Ammonites. Why did you despise the word of the LORD by doing what is evil in his eyes? You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and took his wife to be your own. You killed him with the sword of the Ammonites.
10 And now the sword shall not depart from your house even to forever, on account that you have despised Me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.’ Now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.’ Now, therefore, the sword will never depart from your house, because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.’
11 Thus says YHWH: ‘Behold, I will raise up against you adversity from your own house, and I will take your wives before your eyes and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the eyes of this sun. Thus says the LORD, ‘Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house. And I will take your wives before your eyes and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of this sun. “This is what the LORD says: ‘Out of your own household I am going to bring calamity on you. Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to one who is close to you, and he will sleep with your wives in broad daylight.
12 For you did it secretly, and I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.’” For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel and before the sun.’” You did it in secret, but I will do this thing in broad daylight before all Israel.’”
13 And David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against YHWH.” And Nathan said to David, “Even YHWH has put away your sin; you shall not die. David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the LORD.” And Nathan said to David, “The LORD also has put away your sin; you shall not die. Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the LORD.” Nathan replied, “The LORD has taken away your sin. You are not going to die.
14 Nevertheless, because you have shown utter contempt for the word of YHWH by this deed, also the son born to you will surely die.” Nevertheless, because by this deed you have utterly scorned the LORD, the child who is born to you shall die.” But because by doing this you have shown utter contempt for the LORD, the son born to you will die.”
15 And Nathan departed to his house. And YHWH struck the child that the wife of Uriah had borne to David, and he became ill. Then Nathan went to his house. And the LORD afflicted the child that Uriah’s wife bore to David, and he became sick. After Nathan had gone home, the LORD struck the child that Uriah’s wife had borne to David, and he became ill.
16 And David pleaded with God for the child, and David kept a fast, and he came in and spent the night and laid down in sackcloth on the ground. David therefore sought God on behalf of the child. And David fasted and went in and lay all night on the ground. David pleaded with God for the child. He fasted and spent the nights lying in sackcloth on the ground.
17 And the elders of his house arose beside him to raise him up from the ground, and he would not, nor did he eat food with them. And the elders of his house stood beside him, to raise him from the ground, but he would not, nor did he eat food with them. The elders of his household stood beside him to get him up from the ground, but he refused, and he would not eat any food with them.
18 And it came to pass on the seventh day that the child died. And the servants of David were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they said, “Indeed, while the child was alive, we spoke to him and he did not listen to our voice. And how can we tell him the child is dead? He may do some harm.” On the seventh day the child died. And the servants of David were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they said, “Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spoke to him, and he did not listen to us. How then can we say to him the child is dead? He may do himself some harm.” On the seventh day the child died. David’s attendants were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they thought, “While the child was still living, he wouldn’t listen to us when we spoke to him. How can we now tell him the child is dead? He may do something desperate.”
19 And David saw that his servants were whispering, and David perceived that the child was dead. And David said to his servants, “Is the child dead?” And they said, “He is dead.” But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David understood that the child was dead. And David said to his servants, “Is the child dead?” They said, “He is dead.” David noticed that his attendants were whispering among themselves, and he realized the child was dead. “Is the child dead?” he asked. “Yes,” they replied, “he is dead.”
20 And David arose from the ground, and he washed and anointed himself and changed his clothes, and he went into the house of YHWH and worshiped. And he went to his own house, and he requested, and they set before him food, and he ate. Then David arose from the earth and washed and anointed himself and changed his clothes. And he went into the house of the LORD and worshiped. He then went to his own house. And when he asked, they set food before him, and he ate. Then David got up from the ground. After he had washed, put on lotions and changed his clothes, he went into the house of the LORD and worshiped. Then he went to his own house, and at his request they served him food, and he ate.
21 And his servants said to him, “What is this thing that you have done? While the child was alive, you fasted and wept; and when the child died, you arose and ate food.” Then his servants said to him, “What is this thing that you have done? You fasted and wept for the child while he was alive; but when the child died, you arose and ate food.” His attendants asked him, “Why are you acting this way? While the child was alive, you fasted and wept, but now that the child is dead, you get up and eat!”
22 And he said, “While the child was alive I fasted and wept, for I said, ‘Who knows that YHWH may be gracious, and the child may live?’ He said, “While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept, for I said, ‘Who knows whether the LORD will be gracious to me, that the child may live?’ He answered, “While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept. I thought, ‘Who knows? The LORD may be gracious to me and let the child live.’
23 And he is dead. Why is this that I should fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, and he shall not return to me.” But now he is dead. Why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.” But now that he is dead, why should I go on fasting? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me.”
24 And David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in to her and lay with her, and she bore a son, and she called his name Solomon. And YHWH loved him. Then David comforted his wife, Bathsheba, and went in to her and lay with her, and she bore a son, and he called his name Solomon. And the LORD loved him Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba, and he went to her and made love to her. She gave birth to a son, and they named him Solomon. The LORD loved him;
25 And He sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet. And He called his name Jedidiah, because of YHWH. and sent a message by Nathan the prophet. So he called his name Jedidiah, because of the LORD. and because the LORD loved him, he sent word through Nathan the prophet to name him Jedidiah.
26 And Joab fought against Rabbah of the sons of Ammon, and he captured the royal city. Now Joab fought against Rabbah of the Ammonites and took the royal city. Meanwhile Joab fought against Rabbah of the Ammonites and captured the royal citadel.
27 And Joab sent messengers to David, and he said, “I have fought against Rabbah; Also I have captured the waters of the city. And Joab sent messengers to David and said, “I have fought against Rabbah; moreover, I have taken the city of waters. Joab then sent messengers to David, saying, “I have fought against Rabbah and taken its water supply.
28 And now gather together the rest of the people and encamp against the city and take it, lest I take the city, and my name it be called after it.” Now then gather the rest of the people together and encamp against the city and take it, lest I take the city and it be called by my name.” Now muster the rest of the troops and besiege the city and capture it. Otherwise I will take the city, and it will be named after me.”
29 And David gathered together all the people, and he went to Rabbah and fought against it and took it. So David gathered all the people together and went to Rabbah and fought against it and took it. So David mustered the entire army and went to Rabbah, and attacked and captured it.
30 And he took the crown of their king from his head, and its weight was a talent of gold, with precious stones; and it was set on the head of David, and the plunder of the city he brought out in great abundance. 31 And the people who were in it he brought out, and he set them to the saw, and to picks of iron, and to axes of iron, and he made pass through to the brick kilns. And so he did to all the cities of the sons of Ammon. And David and all the people returned to Jerusalem. And he brought out the people who were in it and set them to labor with saws and iron picks and iron axes and made them toil at the brick kilns. And thus he did to all the cities of the Ammonites. Then David and all the people returned to Jerusalem. and brought out the people who were there, consigning them to labor with saws and with iron picks and axes, and he made them work at brickmaking. David did this to all the Ammonite towns. Then he and his entire army returned to Jerusalem.
