The Lord now chose seventy-two other disciples and sent them ahead in pairs to all the towns and places he planned to visit.1After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come.
These were his instructions to them: “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.2Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.
Now go, and remember that I am sending you out as lambs among wolves.3Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves.
Don’t take any money with you, nor a traveler’s bag, nor an extra pair of sandals. And don’t stop to greet anyone on the road.4Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way.
“Whenever you enter someone’s home, first say, ‘May God’s peace be on this house.’5And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house.
If those who live there are peaceful, the blessing will stand; if they are not, the blessing will return to you.6And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again.
Don’t move around from home to home. Stay in one place, eating and drinking what they provide. Don’t hesitate to accept hospitality, because those who work deserve their pay.7And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house.
“If you enter a town and it welcomes you, eat whatever is set before you.8And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you:
Heal the sick, and tell them, ‘The Kingdom of God is near you now.’9And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.
But if a town refuses to welcome you, go out into its streets and say,10But into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say,
‘We wipe even the dust of your town from our feet to show that we have abandoned you to your fate. And know this—the Kingdom of God is near!’11Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.
I assure you, even wicked Sodom will be better off than such a town on judgment day.12But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city.
“What sorrow awaits you, Korazin and Bethsaida! For if the miracles I did in you had been done in wicked Tyre and Sidon, their people would have repented of their sins long ago, clothing themselves in burlap and throwing ashes on their heads to show their remorse.13Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon, which have been done in you, they had a great while ago repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.
Yes, Tyre and Sidon will be better off on judgment day than you.14But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you.
And you people of Capernaum, will you be honored in heaven? No, you will go down to the place of the dead. ”15And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to heaven, shalt be thrust down to hell.
Then he said to the disciples, “Anyone who accepts your message is also accepting me. And anyone who rejects you is rejecting me. And anyone who rejects me is rejecting God, who sent me.”16He that heareth you heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me.
When the seventy-two disciples returned, they joyfully reported to him, “Lord, even the demons obey us when we use your name!”17And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.
“Yes,” he told them, “I saw Satan fall from heaven like lightning!18And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.
Look, I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy, and you can walk among snakes and scorpions and crush them. Nothing will injure you.19Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
But don’t rejoice because evil spirits obey you; rejoice because your names are registered in heaven.” Jesus’ Prayer of Thanksgiving20Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
At that same time Jesus was filled with the joy of the Holy Spirit, and he said, “O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike. Yes, Father, it pleased you to do it this way.21In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.
“My Father has entrusted everything to me. No one truly knows the Son except the Father, and no one truly knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”22All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.
Then when they were alone, he turned to the disciples and said, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you have seen.23And he turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see:
I tell you, many prophets and kings longed to see what you see, but they didn’t see it. And they longed to hear what you hear, but they didn’t hear it.” The Most Important Commandment24For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.
One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question: “Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?”25And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
Jesus replied, “What does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?”26He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou?
The man answered, “‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ And, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”27And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.
“Right!” Jesus told him. “Do this and you will live!”28And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.
The man wanted to justify his actions, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Parable of the Good Samaritan29But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour?
Jesus replied with a story: “A Jewish man was traveling from Jerusalem down to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road.30And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.
“By chance a priest came along. But when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by.31And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
A Temple assistant walked over and looked at him lying there, but he also passed by on the other side.32And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.
“Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him.33But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,
Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him.34And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.
The next day he handed the innkeeper two silver coins, telling him, ‘Take care of this man. If his bill runs higher than this, I’ll pay you the next time I’m here.’35And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.
“Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?” Jesus asked.36Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?
The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.” Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.” Jesus Visits Martha and Mary37And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.
As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home.38Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.
Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught.39And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.
But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.”40But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.
But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details!41And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:
There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”42But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
