New Living Translation | International Standard Version |
One day Jesus said to his disciples, “There will always be temptations to sin, but what sorrow awaits the person who does the tempting! | 1Jesus told his disciples, "It is inevitable that temptations to sin will come, but how terrible it will be for the person through whom they come! |
It would be better to be thrown into the sea with a millstone hung around your neck than to cause one of these little ones to fall into sin. | 2It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin. |
So watch yourselves! “If another believer sins, rebuke that person; then if there is repentance, forgive. | 3"Watch yourselves! If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him. |
Even if that person wrongs you seven times a day and each time turns again and asks forgiveness, you must forgive.” | 4Even if he sins against you seven times in a day and comes back to you seven times and says, 'I repent,' you must forgive him." |
The apostles said to the Lord, “Show us how to increase our faith.” | 5Then the apostles told the Lord, "Give us more faith!" |
The Lord answered, “If you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘May you be uprooted and be planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you! | 6The Lord replied, "If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it would obey you! |
“When a servant comes in from plowing or taking care of sheep, does his master say, ‘Come in and eat with me’? | 7"Suppose a man among you has a servant plowing or watching sheep. Would he say to him when he comes in from the field, 'Come at once and have something to eat'? |
No, he says, ‘Prepare my meal, put on your apron, and serve me while I eat. Then you can eat later.’ | 8Of course not. Instead, he would say to him, 'Get dinner ready for me, and put on your apron and wait on me until I eat and drink. Then you can eat and drink.' |
And does the master thank the servant for doing what he was told to do? Of course not. | 9He doesn't praise the servant for doing what was commanded, does he? |
In the same way, when you obey me you should say, ‘We are unworthy servants who have simply done our duty.’” Ten Healed of Leprosy | 10That's the way it is with you. When you have done everything you were ordered to do, say, 'We are worthless servants. We have done only what we ought to have done.'" |
As Jesus continued on toward Jerusalem, he reached the border between Galilee and Samaria. | 11One day, Jesus was traveling along the border between Samaria and Galilee on the way to Jerusalem. |
As he entered a village there, ten men with leprosy stood at a distance, | 12As he was going into a village, ten lepers met him. They stood at a distance |
crying out, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” | 13and shouted, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!" |
He looked at them and said, “Go show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed of their leprosy. | 14When Jesus saw them, he told them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." While they were going, they were made clean. |
One of them, when he saw that he was healed, came back to Jesus, shouting, “Praise God!” | 15But one of them, when he saw that he had been healed, came back and praised God with a loud voice. |
He fell to the ground at Jesus’ feet, thanking him for what he had done. This man was a Samaritan. | 16He fell on his face at Jesus' feet and thanked him. Now that man was a Samaritan. |
Jesus asked, “Didn’t I heal ten men? Where are the other nine? | 17Jesus asked, "Ten men were made clean, weren't they? Where are the other nine? |
Has no one returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?” | 18Except for this foreigner, were any of them found to return and give praise to God?" |
And Jesus said to the man, “Stand up and go. Your faith has healed you. ” The Coming of the Kingdom | 19Then he told the man, "Get up, and go home! Your faith has made you well." |
One day the Pharisees asked Jesus, “When will the Kingdom of God come?” Jesus replied, “The Kingdom of God can’t be detected by visible signs. | 20Once Jesus was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come. He answered them, "The kingdom of God is not coming with a visible display. |
You won’t be able to say, ‘Here it is!’ or ‘It’s over there!’ For the Kingdom of God is already among you. ” | 21People won't be saying, 'Look! Here it is!' or 'There it is!' because now the kingdom of God is among you." |
Then he said to his disciples, “The time is coming when you will long to see the day when the Son of Man returns, but you won’t see it. | 22Then Jesus told the disciples, "The time will come during which you will long to see one of these days when the Son of Man is with you, but you will not see it. |
People will tell you, ‘Look, there is the Son of Man,’ or ‘Here he is,’ but don’t go out and follow them. | 23People will say to you, 'Look! There he is!' or 'Look! Here he is!' But don't go and chase after him. |
For as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other, so it will be on the day when the Son of Man comes. | 24Because just as lightning flashes and shines from one end of the sky to the other, so will the Son of Man be in his time. |
But first the Son of Man must suffer terribly and be rejected by this generation. | 25But first he must suffer a great deal and be rejected by those living today. |
“When the Son of Man returns, it will be like it was in Noah’s day. | 26"Just as it was in Noah's time, so it will be in the days of the Son of Man. |
In those days, the people enjoyed banquets and parties and weddings right up to the time Noah entered his boat and the flood came and destroyed them all. | 27People were eating, drinking, marrying, and being given in marriage right up to the day when Noah went into the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed all of them. |
“And the world will be as it was in the days of Lot. People went about their daily business—eating and drinking, buying and selling, farming and building— | 28So it was in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. |
until the morning Lot left Sodom. Then fire and burning sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all. | 29But on the day when Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed all of them. |
Yes, it will be ‘business as usual’ right up to the day when the Son of Man is revealed. | 30The day when the Son of Man is revealed will be like that. |
On that day a person out on the deck of a roof must not go down into the house to pack. A person out in the field must not return home. | 31"The person who is on the housetop that day must not come down to get his belongings out of his house. The person in the field, too, must not turn back to what's left behind. |
Remember what happened to Lot’s wife! | 32Remember Lot's wife! |
If you cling to your life, you will lose it, and if you let your life go, you will save it. | 33Whoever tries to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will preserve it. |
That night two people will be asleep in one bed; one will be taken, the other left. | 34I tell you, two will be seated on the same couch that night. The one will be taken, and the other will be left behind. |
Two women will be grinding flour together at the mill; one will be taken, the other left. ” | 35Two women will be grinding grain together. The one will be taken, and the other will be left behind." |
“Where will this happen, Lord?” the disciples asked. Jesus replied, “Just as the gathering of vultures shows there is a carcass nearby, so these signs indicate that the end is near.” | 37Then they asked him, "Where, Lord, will this take place?" He told them, "Wherever there's a corpse, there the vultures will gather." |
