As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, "Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!" | 1As He was going out of the temple, one of His disciples said to Him, "Teacher, behold what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!" |
"Do you see all these great buildings?" replied Jesus. "Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down." | 2And Jesus said to him, "Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left upon another which will not be torn down." |
As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John and Andrew asked him privately, | 3As He was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew were questioning Him privately, |
"Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?" | 4"Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are going to be fulfilled?" |
Jesus said to them: "Watch out that no one deceives you. | 5And Jesus began to say to them, "See to it that no one misleads you. |
Many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am he,' and will deceive many. | 6"Many will come in My name, saying, 'I am He!' and will mislead many. |
When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. | 7"When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be frightened; those things must take place; but that is not yet the end. |
Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains. | 8"For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will also be famines. These things are merely the beginning of birth pangs. |
"You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues. On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them. | 9"But be on your guard; for they will deliver you to the courts, and you will be flogged in the synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them. |
And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. | 10"The gospel must first be preached to all the nations. |
Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit. | 11"When they arrest you and hand you over, do not worry beforehand about what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour; for it is not you who speak, but it is the Holy Spirit. |
"Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. | 12"Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and have them put to death. |
Everyone will hate you because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. | 13"You will be hated by all because of My name, but the one who endures to the end, he will be saved. |
"When you see 'the abomination that causes desolation' standing where it does not belong--let the reader understand--then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. | 14"But when you see the ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION standing where it should not be (let the reader understand), then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. |
Let no one on the housetop go down or enter the house to take anything out. | 15"The one who is on the housetop must not go down, or go in to get anything out of his house; |
Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. | 16and the one who is in the field must not turn back to get his coat. |
How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! | 17"But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! |
Pray that this will not take place in winter, | 18"But pray that it may not happen in the winter. |
because those will be days of distress unequaled from the beginning, when God created the world, until now--and never to be equaled again. | 19"For those days will be a time of tribulation such as has not occurred since the beginning of the creation which God created until now, and never will. |
"If the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened them. | 20"Unless the Lord had shortened those days, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect, whom He chose, He shortened the days. |
At that time if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Messiah!' or, 'Look, there he is!' do not believe it. | 21"And then if anyone says to you, 'Behold, here is the Christ'; or, 'Behold, He is there'; do not believe him; |
For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. | 22for false Christs and false prophets will arise, and will show signs and wonders, in order to lead astray, if possible, the elect. |
So be on your guard; I have told you everything ahead of time. | 23"But take heed; behold, I have told you everything in advance. |
"But in those days, following that distress, "'the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; | 24"But in those days, after that tribulation, THE SUN WILL BE DARKENED AND THE MOON WILL NOT GIVE ITS LIGHT, |
the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.' | 25AND THE STARS WILL BE FALLING from heaven, and the powers that are in the heavens will be shaken. |
"At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. | 26"Then they will see THE SON OF MAN COMING IN CLOUDS with great power and glory. |
And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens. | 27"And then He will send forth the angels, and will gather together His elect from the four winds, from the farthest end of the earth to the farthest end of heaven. |
"Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. | 28"Now learn the parable from the fig tree: when its branch has already become tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. |
Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it is near, right at the door. | 29"Even so, you too, when you see these things happening, recognize that He is near, right at the door. |
Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. | 30"Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. |
Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. | 31"Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away. |
"But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. | 32"But of that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone. |
Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come. | 33"Take heed, keep on the alert; for you do not know when the appointed time will come. |
It's like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch. | 34"It is like a man away on a journey, who upon leaving his house and putting his slaves in charge, assigning to each one his task, also commanded the doorkeeper to stay on the alert. |
"Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back--whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. | 35"Therefore, be on the alert-- for you do not know when the master of the house is coming, whether in the evening, at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning-- |
If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. | 36in case he should come suddenly and find you asleep. |
What I say to you, I say to everyone: 'Watch!'" | 37"What I say to you I say to all, 'Be on the alert!'" |
