Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,1The LORD spoke to Moses:
"Take full vengeance for the sons of Israel on the Midianites; afterward you will be gathered to your people."2"Exact vengeance for the Israelites on the Midianites--after that you will be gathered to your people."
Moses spoke to the people, saying, "Arm men from among you for the war, that they may go against Midian to execute the LORD'S vengeance on Midian.3So Moses spoke to the people: "Arm men from among you for the war, to attack the Midianites and to execute the LORD's vengeance on Midian.
"A thousand from each tribe of all the tribes of Israel you shall send to the war."4You must send to the battle a thousand men from every tribe throughout all the tribes of Israel."
So there were furnished from the thousands of Israel, a thousand from each tribe, twelve thousand armed for war.5So a thousand from every tribe, twelve thousand armed for battle in all, were provided out of the thousands of Israel.
Moses sent them, a thousand from each tribe, to the war, and Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, to the war with them, and the holy vessels and the trumpets for the alarm in his hand.6So Moses sent them to the war, one thousand from every tribe, with Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest, who was in charge of the holy articles and the signal trumpets.
So they made war against Midian, just as the LORD had commanded Moses, and they killed every male.7They fought against the Midianites, as the LORD commanded Moses, and they killed every male.
They killed the kings of Midian along with the rest of their slain: Evi and Rekem and Zur and Hur and Reba, the five kings of Midian; they also killed Balaam the son of Beor with the sword.8They killed the kings of Midian in addition to those slain--Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba--five Midianite kings. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword.
The sons of Israel captured the women of Midian and their little ones; and all their cattle and all their flocks and all their goods they plundered.9The Israelites took the women of Midian captives along with their little ones, and took all their herds, all their flocks, and all their goods as plunder.
Then they burned all their cities where they lived and all their camps with fire.10They burned all their towns where they lived and all their encampments.
They took all the spoil and all the prey, both of man and of beast.11They took all the plunder and all the spoils, both people and animals.
They brought the captives and the prey and the spoil to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest and to the congregation of the sons of Israel, to the camp at the plains of Moab, which are by the Jordan opposite Jericho.12They brought the captives and the spoils and the plunder to Moses, to Eleazar the priest, and to the Israelite community, to the camp on the plains of Moab, along the Jordan River across from Jericho.
Moses and Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the congregation went out to meet them outside the camp.13Moses, Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the community went out to meet them outside the camp.
Moses was angry with the officers of the army, the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds, who had come from service in the war.14But Moses was furious with the officers of the army, the commanders over thousands and commanders over hundreds, who had come from service in the war.
And Moses said to them, "Have you spared all the women?15Moses said to them, "Have you allowed all the women to live?
"Behold, these caused the sons of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to trespass against the LORD in the matter of Peor, so the plague was among the congregation of the LORD.16Look, these people through the counsel of Balaam caused the Israelites to act treacherously against the LORD in the matter of Peor--which resulted in the plague among the community of the LORD!
"Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man intimately.17Now therefore kill every boy, and kill every woman who has had sexual intercourse with a man.
"But all the girls who have not known man intimately, spare for yourselves.18But all the young women who have not had sexual intercourse with a man will be yours.
"And you, camp outside the camp seven days; whoever has killed any person and whoever has touched any slain, purify yourselves, you and your captives, on the third day and on the seventh day.19"Any of you who has killed anyone or touched any of the dead, remain outside the camp for seven days; purify yourselves and your captives on the third day, and on the seventh day.
"You shall purify for yourselves every garment and every article of leather and all the work of goats' hair, and all articles of wood."20You must purify each garment and everything that is made of skin, everything made of goat's hair, and everything made of wood."
Then Eleazar the priest said to the men of war who had gone to battle, "This is the statute of the law which the LORD has commanded Moses:21Then Eleazar the priest said to the men of war who had gone into the battle, "This is the ordinance of the law that the LORD commanded Moses:
only the gold and the silver, the bronze, the iron, the tin and the lead,22Only the gold, the silver, the bronze, the iron, the tin, and the lead,
everything that can stand the fire, you shall pass through the fire, and it shall be clean, but it shall be purified with water for impurity. But whatever cannot stand the fire you shall pass through the water.23everything that may stand the fire, you are to pass through the fire, and it will be ceremonially clean, but it must still be purified with the water of purification. Anything that cannot withstand the fire you must pass through the water.
"And you shall wash your clothes on the seventh day and be clean, and afterward you may enter the camp."24You must wash your clothes on the seventh day, and you will be ceremonially clean, and afterward you may enter the camp.'"
Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,25Then the LORD spoke to Moses:
"You and Eleazar the priest and the heads of the fathers' households of the congregation take a count of the booty that was captured, both of man and of animal;26"You and Eleazar the priest, and all the family leaders of the community, take the sum of the plunder that was captured, both people and animals.
and divide the booty between the warriors who went out to battle and all the congregation.27Divide the plunder into two parts, one for those who took part in the war--who went out to battle--and the other for all the community.
"Levy a tax for the LORD from the men of war who went out to battle, one in five hundred of the persons and of the cattle and of the donkeys and of the sheep;28"You must exact a tribute for the LORD from the fighting men who went out to battle: one life out of five hundred, from the people, the cattle, and from the donkeys and the sheep.
take it from their half and give it to Eleazar the priest, as an offering to the LORD.29You are to take it from their half-share and give it to Eleazar the priest for a raised offering to the LORD.
"From the sons of Israel's half, you shall take one drawn out of every fifty of the persons, of the cattle, of the donkeys and of the sheep, from all the animals, and give them to the Levites who keep charge of the tabernacle of the LORD."30From the Israelites' half-share you are to take one portion out of fifty of the people, the cattle, the donkeys, and the sheep--from every kind of animal--and you are to give them to the Levites, who are responsible for the care of the LORD's tabernacle."
Moses and Eleazar the priest did just as the LORD had commanded Moses.31So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the LORD commanded Moses.
Now the booty that remained from the spoil which the men of war had plundered was 675,000 sheep,32The spoil that remained of the plunder which the fighting men had gathered was 675,000 sheep,
and 72,000 cattle,3372,000 cattle,
and 61,000 donkeys,3461,000 donkeys,
and of human beings, of the women who had not known man intimately, all the persons were 32,000.35and 32,000 young women who had never had sexual intercourse with a man.
The half, the portion of those who went out to war, was as follows: the number of sheep was 337,500,36The half-portion of those who went to war numbered 337,500 sheep;
and the LORD'S levy of the sheep was 675;37the LORD's tribute from the sheep was 675.
and the cattle were 36,000, from which the LORD'S levy was 72;38The cattle numbered 36,000; the LORD's tribute was 72.
and the donkeys were 30,500, from which the LORD'S levy was 61;39The donkeys were 30,500, of which the LORD's tribute was 61.
and the human beings were 16,000, from whom the LORD'S levy was 32 persons.40The people were 16,000, of which the LORD's tribute was 32 people.
Moses gave the levy which was the LORD'S offering to Eleazar the priest, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.41So Moses gave the tribute, which was the LORD's raised offering, to Eleazar the priest, as the LORD commanded Moses.
As for the sons of Israel's half, which Moses separated from the men who had gone to war--42From the Israelites' half-share that Moses had separated from the fighting men,
now the congregation's half was 337,500 sheep,43there were 337,500 sheep from the portion belonging to the community,
and 36,000 cattle,4436,000 cattle,
and 30,500 donkeys,4530,500 donkeys,
and the human beings were 16,000--46and 16,000 people.
and from the sons of Israel's half, Moses took one drawn out of every fifty, both of man and of animals, and gave them to the Levites, who kept charge of the tabernacle of the LORD, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.47From the Israelites' share Moses took one of every fifty people and animals and gave them to the Levites who were responsible for the care of the Lord's tabernacle, just as the LORD commanded Moses.
Then the officers who were over the thousands of the army, the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds, approached Moses,48Then the officers who were over the thousands of the army, the commanders over thousands and the commanders over hundreds, approached Moses
and they said to Moses, "Your servants have taken a census of men of war who are in our charge, and no man of us is missing.49and said to him, "Your servants have taken a count of the men who were in the battle, who were under our authority, and not one is missing.
"So we have brought as an offering to the LORD what each man found, articles of gold, armlets and bracelets, signet rings, earrings and necklaces, to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD."50So we have brought as an offering for the LORD what each man found: gold ornaments, armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings, and necklaces, to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD."
Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from them, all kinds of wrought articles.51Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from them, all of it in the form of ornaments.
All the gold of the offering which they offered up to the LORD, from the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds, was 16,750 shekels.52All the gold of the offering they offered up to the LORD from the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds weighed 16,750 shekels.
The men of war had taken booty, every man for himself.53Each soldier had taken plunder for himself.
So Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it to the tent of meeting as a memorial for the sons of Israel before the LORD.54So Moses and Eleazar the priest received the gold from the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds and brought it into the tent of meeting as a memorial for the Israelites before the LORD.
