Now Abraham had taken another wife, named Keturah, | 1Now Abraham took another wife, whose name was Keturah. |
and she bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. | 2She bore to him Zimran and Jokshan and Medan and Midian and Ishbak and Shuah. |
Jokshan was the father of Sheba and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were the Asshurites, the Letushites, and the Leummites. | 3Jokshan became the father of Sheba and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim and Letushim and Leummim. |
The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were descendants of Keturah. | 4The sons of Midian were Ephah and Epher and Hanoch and Abida and Eldaah. All these were the sons of Keturah. |
Abraham left everything he owned to Isaac. | 5Now Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac; |
But while he was still alive, Abraham gave gifts to the sons of his concubines and sent them away from his son Isaac to the land of the east. | 6but to the sons of his concubines, Abraham gave gifts while he was still living, and sent them away from his son Isaac eastward, to the land of the east. |
Abraham lived a total of 175 years. | 7These are all the years of Abraham's life that he lived, one hundred and seventy-five years. |
And at a ripe old age he breathed his last and died, old and contented, and was gathered to his people. | 8Abraham breathed his last and died in a ripe old age, an old man and satisfied with life; and he was gathered to his people. |
His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah near Mamre, in the field of Ephron son of Zohar the Hittite. | 9Then his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, facing Mamre, |
This was the field that Abraham had bought from the Hittites. Abraham was buried there with his wife Sarah. | 10the field which Abraham purchased from the sons of Heth; there Abraham was buried with Sarah his wife. |
After Abraham’s death, God blessed his son Isaac, who lived near Beer-lahai-roi. | 11It came about after the death of Abraham, that God blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac lived by Beer-lahai-roi. |
This is the account of Abraham’s son Ishmael, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s maidservant, bore to Abraham. | 12Now these are the records of the generations of Ishmael, Abraham's son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's maid, bore to Abraham; |
These are the names of the sons of Ishmael in the order of their birth: Nebaioth the firstborn of Ishmael, then Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, | 13and these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, in the order of their birth: Nebaioth, the firstborn of Ishmael, and Kedar and Adbeel and Mibsam |
Mishma, Dumah, Massa, | 14and Mishma and Dumah and Massa, |
Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. | 15Hadad and Tema, Jetur, Naphish and Kedemah. |
These were the sons of Ishmael, and these were their names by their villages and encampments—twelve princes of their tribes. | 16These are the sons of Ishmael and these are their names, by their villages, and by their camps; twelve princes according to their tribes. |
Ishmael lived a total of 137 years. Then he breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people. | 17These are the years of the life of Ishmael, one hundred and thirty-seven years; and he breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people. |
Ishmael’s descendants settled from Havilah to Shur, which is near the border of Egypt as you go toward Asshur. And they lived in hostility toward all their brothers. | 18They settled from Havilah to Shur which is east of Egypt as one goes toward Assyria; he settled in defiance of all his relatives. |
This is the account of Abraham’s son Isaac. Abraham became the father of Isaac, | 19Now these are the records of the generations of Isaac, Abraham's son: Abraham became the father of Isaac; |
and Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan-aram and the sister of Laban the Aramean. | 20and Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan-aram, the sister of Laban the Aramean, to be his wife. |
Later, Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. And the LORD heard his prayer, and his wife Rebekah conceived. | 21Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren; and the LORD answered him and Rebekah his wife conceived. |
But the children inside her struggled with each other, and she said, “Why is this happening to me?” So Rebekah went to inquire of the LORD, | 22But the children struggled together within her; and she said, "If it is so, why then am I this way?" So she went to inquire of the LORD. |
and He declared to her: “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.” | 23The LORD said to her, "Two nations are in your womb; And two peoples will be separated from your body; And one people shall be stronger than the other; And the older shall serve the younger." |
When her time came to give birth, there were indeed twins in her womb. | 24When her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb. |
The first one came out red, covered with hair like a fur coat; so they named him Esau. | 25Now the first came forth red, all over like a hairy garment; and they named him Esau. |
After this, his brother came out grasping Esau’s heel; so he was named Jacob. And Isaac was sixty years old when the twins were born. | 26Afterward his brother came forth with his hand holding on to Esau's heel, so his name was called Jacob; and Isaac was sixty years old when she gave birth to them. |
When the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob was a quiet man who stayed at home. | 27When the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the field, but Jacob was a peaceful man, living in tents. |
Because Isaac had a taste for wild game, he loved Esau; but Rebekah loved Jacob. | 28Now Isaac loved Esau, because he had a taste for game, but Rebekah loved Jacob. |
One day, while Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the field and was famished. | 29When Jacob had cooked stew, Esau came in from the field and he was famished; |
He said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red stew, for I am famished.” (That is why he was also called Edom.) | 30and Esau said to Jacob, "Please let me have a swallow of that red stuff there, for I am famished." Therefore his name was called Edom. |
“First sell me your birthright,” Jacob replied. | 31But Jacob said, "First sell me your birthright." |
“Look,” said Esau, “I am about to die, so what good is a birthright to me?” | 32Esau said, "Behold, I am about to die; so of what use then is the birthright to me?" |
“Swear to me first,” Jacob said. So Esau swore to Jacob and sold him the birthright. | 33And Jacob said, "First swear to me"; so he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob. |
Then Jacob gave some bread and lentil stew to Esau, who ate and drank and then got up and went away. Thus Esau despised his birthright. | 34Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew; and he ate and drank, and rose and went on his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright. |
