Yahweh Is Exalted

1  ה֣וֹי (Woe) שׁוֹדֵ֗ד (O destroyer), וְאַתָּה֙ (even you) לֹ֣א (never) שָׁד֔וּד (destroyed);

וּבוֹגֵ֖ד (and you treacherous one), וְלֹא־ (and not) בָ֣גְדוּ (they have betrayed) ב֑וֹ (him)

כַּהֲתִֽמְךָ֤ (at the completion of your) שׁוֹדֵד֙ (destroying),

תּוּשַּׁ֔ד (you will be destroyed);

כַּנְּלֹתְךָ֥ (as you finish) לִבְגֹּ֖ד (being treacherous),

יִבְגְּדוּ־ (they will deal treacherously) בָֽךְ׃ס (with you).

2  יְהוָ֥ה (O YHWH), חָנֵּ֖נוּ (show favor to us)

לְךָ֣ (for You) קִוִּ֑ינוּ (we wait)

הֱיֵ֤ה (Be) זְרֹעָם֙ (their arm) לַבְּקָרִ֔ים (in the mornings),

אַף־ (also) יְשׁוּעָתֵ֖נוּ (our salvation) בְּעֵ֥ת (in the time) צָרָֽה׃ (of distress).

3  מִקּ֣וֹל (From the voice) הָמ֔וֹן (of roaring) נָדְד֖וּ (will flee); עַמִּ֑ים (the peoples)

מֵר֣וֹמְמֻתֶ֔ךָ (from Your rising up) נָפְצ֖וּ (will be scattered) גּוֹיִֽם׃ (the nations).

4  וְאֻסַּ֣ף (Will be gathered) שְׁלַלְכֶ֔ם (Your⁺ plunder) אֹ֖סֶף (as gathers) הֶֽחָסִ֑יל (the locust);

כְּמַשַּׁ֥ק (as the rushing) גֵּבִ֖ים (of locusts) שׁוֹקֵ֥ק (shall he run) בּֽוֹ׃ (upon it).

5  נִשְׂגָּ֣ב (Is exalted); יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) כִּ֥י (for) שֹׁכֵ֖ן (He dwells) מָר֑וֹם (on high);

מִלֵּ֣א (He has filled) צִיּ֔וֹן (Zion) מִשְׁפָּ֖ט (with justice) וּצְדָקָֽה׃ (and righteousness).

6  וְהָיָה֙ (And He will be) אֱמוּנַ֣ת (the steadfastness) עִתֶּ֔יךָ (of your times),

חֹ֥סֶן (a wealth) יְשׁוּעֹ֖ת (of salvation), חָכְמַ֣ת (wisdom) וָדָ֑עַת (and knowledge)

יִרְאַ֥ת (the fear) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) הִ֥יא (is) אוֹצָרֽוֹ׃ס (his treasure).

7  הֵ֚ן (Behold), אֶרְאֶלָּ֔ם (Their Ariel) צָעֲק֖וּ (they have cried) חֻ֑צָה (outside),

מַלְאֲכֵ֣י (the messengers) שָׁל֔וֹם (of peace) מַ֖ר (bitterly) יִבְכָּיֽוּן׃ (do weep).

8  נָשַׁ֣מּוּ (Are desolate), מְסִלּ֔וֹת (for the highways)

שָׁבַ֖ת (has ceased from), עֹבֵ֣ר (those traveling) אֹ֑רַח (the road)

הֵפֵ֤ר (he has broken) בְּרִית֙ (the covenant),

מָאַ֣ס (he has despised) עָרִ֔ים (the cities),

לֹ֥א (not) חָשַׁ֖ב (he has regarded) אֱנֽוֹשׁ׃ (man).

9  אָבַ֤ל (Mourns) אֻמְלְלָה֙ (and languishes); אָ֔רֶץ (the land)

הֶחְפִּ֥יר (is ashamed) לְבָנ֖וֹן (Lebanon) קָמַ֑ל (and decays);

הָיָ֤ה (has becoe) הַשָּׁרוֹן֙ (Sharon) כָּֽעֲרָבָ֔ה (like the Arabah);

וְנֹעֵ֥ר (shake off) בָּשָׁ֖ן (Bashan) וְכַרְמֶֽל׃ (and Carmel).

10  עַתָּ֥ה (Now) אָק֖וּם (I will arise), יֹאמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH);

עַתָּה֙ (Now) אֵֽרוֹמָ֔ם (I will be exalted); עַתָּ֖ה (now) אֶנָּשֵֽׂא׃ (I will lift Myself up).

11  תַּהֲר֥וּ (You⁺ conceive) חֲשַׁ֖שׁ (chaff), תֵּ֣לְדוּ (you⁺ give birth to) קַ֑שׁ (stubble);

רוּחֲכֶ֕ם (your⁺ breath like), אֵ֖שׁ (a fire), תֹּאכַלְכֶֽם׃ (will devour you⁺).

12  וְהָי֥וּ (And will be) עַמִּ֖ים (the people) מִשְׂרְפ֣וֹת (like the burnings) שִׂ֑יד (of lime),

קוֹצִ֥ים (thorns) כְּסוּחִ֖ים (cut) בָּאֵ֥שׁ (in the fire) יִצַּֽתּוּ׃ס (they will be burned).

13  שִׁמְע֥וּ (Hear), רְחוֹקִ֖ים (far away ones), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (what) עָשִׂ֑יתִי (I have done);

וּדְע֥וּ (and acknowledge) קְרוֹבִ֖ים (near ones), גְּבֻרָתִֽי׃ (My might).

14  פָּחֲד֤וּ (Are afraid); בְצִיּוֹן֙ (in Zion) חַטָּאִ֔ים (the sinful ones)

אָחֲזָ֥ה (has seized) רְעָדָ֖ה (trembling) חֲנֵפִ֑ים (the godless).

מִ֣י׀ (Who) יָג֣וּר (can dwell with) לָ֗נוּ (of us) אֵ֚שׁ (fire)? אוֹכֵלָ֔ה (A consuming)

מִי־ (who) יָג֥וּר (can dwell with) לָ֖נוּ (of us) מוֹקְדֵ֥י (burnings) עוֹלָֽם׃ (forever)?

15  הֹלֵ֣ךְ (The one walking) צְדָק֔וֹת (righteously),

וְדֹבֵ֖ר (and speaking) מֵֽישָׁרִ֑ים (uprightly);

מֹאֵ֞ס (the one rejecting) בְּבֶ֣צַע (the gain) מַעֲשַׁקּ֗וֹת (of oppression),

נֹעֵ֤ר (shaking) כַּפָּיו֙ (his hands away) מִתְּמֹ֣ךְ (from grasping) בַּשֹּׁ֔חַד (at a bribe),

אֹטֵ֤ם (the one shutting) אָזְנוֹ֙ (his ears) מִשְּׁמֹ֣עַ (from hearing) דָּמִ֔ים (of bloodshed),

וְעֹצֵ֥ם (and closing) עֵינָ֖יו (his eyes) מֵרְא֥וֹת (from looking) בְּרָֽע׃ (at evil);

16  ה֚וּא (He) מְרוֹמִ֣ים (on the heights), יִשְׁכֹּ֔ן (will dwell)

מְצָד֥וֹת (strongholds in) סְלָעִ֖ים (the cliffs); מִשְׂגַּבּ֑וֹ (are his refuge)

לַחְמ֣וֹ (his bread) נִתָּ֔ן (will be given)

מֵימָ֖יו (his water) נֶאֱמָנִֽים׃ (will be sure).

17  מֶ֥לֶךְ (At the King) בְּיָפְי֖וֹ (in His beauty); תֶּחֱזֶ֣ינָה (will gaze) עֵינֶ֑יךָ (your eyes)

תִּרְאֶ֖ינָה (they will see) אֶ֥רֶץ (a land) מַרְחַקִּֽים׃ (faraway).

18  לִבְּךָ֖ (Your heart) יֶהְגֶּ֣ה (will ponder) אֵימָ֑ה (the terror).

אַיֵּ֤ה (Where is) סֹפֵר֙ (the one counting)? אַיֵּ֣ה (Where is) שֹׁקֵ֔ל (the one weighing)?

אַיֵּ֖ה (Where is) סֹפֵ֥ר (the one counting) אֶת־ (-) הַמִּגְדָּלִֽים׃ (the towers)?

19  אֶת־ (-) עַ֥ם (a people), נוֹעָ֖ז (fierce) לֹ֣א (you will not) תִרְאֶ֑ה (see)

עַ֣ם (a people) עִמְקֵ֤י (in the depths) שָׂפָה֙ (of speech) מִשְּׁמ֔וֹעַ (beyond hearing);

נִלְעַ֥ג (a stammering) לָשׁ֖וֹן (of the tongue), אֵ֥ין (without) בִּינָֽה׃ (understanding).

20  חֲזֵ֣ה (Look upon) צִיּ֔וֹן (Zion),

קִרְיַ֖ת (the city) מֽוֹעֲדֵ֑נוּ (of our appointed times);

עֵינֶיךָ֩ (your eyes) תִרְאֶ֨ינָה (let look on) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֜ם (Jerusalem)

נָוֶ֣ה (abode), שַׁאֲנָ֗ן (a quiet) אֹ֤הֶל (a tent) בַּל־ (that not) יִצְעָן֙ (does wander);

בַּל־ (not) יִסַּ֤ע (will be pulled out), יְתֵֽדֹתָיו֙ (one of its pegs) לָנֶ֔צַח (forever)

וְכָל־ (and all) חֲבָלָ֖יו (of its cords) בַּל־ (cannot) יִנָּתֵֽקוּ׃ (be broken).

21  כִּ֣י (But) אִם־ (-) שָׁ֞ם (there) אַדִּ֤יר (majestic) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH is) לָ֔נוּ (for us)

מְקוֹם־ (a standing reservoir) נְהָרִ֥ים (of rivers) יְאֹרִ֖ים (and streams); רַחֲבֵ֣י (broad) יָדָ֑יִם (of hands)

בַּל־ (where no) תֵּ֤לֶךְ (shall go) בּוֹ֙ (on it) אֳנִי־ (fleet) שַׁ֔יִט (with oar),

וְצִ֥י (and a ship) אַדִּ֖יר (majestic) לֹ֥א (not) יַעַבְרֶֽנּוּ׃ (will pass over it).

22  כִּ֤י (For) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH is) שֹׁפְטֵ֔נוּ (the One judging us),

יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH is) מְחֹקְקֵ֑נוּ (the One decreeing for us),

יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH is) מַלְכֵּ֖נוּ (our King);

ה֥וּא (He) יוֹשִׁיעֵֽנוּ׃ (will save us).

23  נִטְּשׁ֖וּ (Are slack); חֲבָלָ֑יִךְ (Your ropes)

בַּל־ (they can not) יְחַזְּק֤וּ (hold) כֵן־ (the firmness) תָּרְנָם֙ (of their mast), בַּל־ (they can not) פָּ֣רְשׂוּ (spread out) נֵ֔ס (the sail).

אָ֣ז (Then) חֻלַּ֤ק (will be divided); עַֽד־ (the prey) שָׁלָל֙ (plunder in) מַרְבֶּ֔ה (great abundance)

פִּסְחִ֖ים (even the lame) בָּ֥זְזוּ (will seize) בַֽז׃ (the spoils).

24  וּבַל־ (Will not) יֹאמַ֥ר (say), שָׁכֵ֖ן (and the dweller) חָלִ֑יתִי (I am sick);

הָעָ֛ם (for the people) הַיֹּשֵׁ֥ב (dwelling) בָּ֖הּ (in it)

נְשֻׂ֥א (will be lifted of) עָוֺֽן׃ (iniquity).
