The Parable of the Cooking Pot

1  וַיְהִי֩ (And came) דְבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֨ה (of YHWH) אֵלַ֜י (to me) בַּשָּׁנָ֤ה (in the year), הַתְּשִׁיעִית֙ (ninth) בַּחֹ֣דֶשׁ (in the month), הָעֲשִׂירִ֔י (tenth) בֶּעָשׂ֥וֹר (on the tenth) לַחֹ֖דֶשׁ (of the month), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 2  בֶּן־ (Son) אָדָ֗ם (of man), כְּתוֹב (write down) לְךָ֙ (for yourself) אֶת־ (-) שֵׁ֣ם (the name) הַיּ֔וֹם (of the day), אֶת־ (-) עֶ֖צֶם (the very) הַיּ֣וֹם (day). הַזֶּ֑ה (This) סָמַ֤ךְ (has laid siege) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) בָּבֶל֙ (of Babylon) אֶל־ (against) יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם (Jerusalem) בְּעֶ֖צֶם (on the very) הַיּ֥וֹם (day) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this). 3  וּמְשֹׁ֤ל (And utter) אֶל־ (to) בֵּית־ (house), הַמֶּ֙רִי֙ (the rebellious) מָשָׁ֔ל (a parable) וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ (and say) אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם (to them) כֹּ֥ה (thus) אָמַ֖ר (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִ֑ה (YHWH);

שְׁפֹ֤ת (Put on) הַסִּיר֙ (a pot),

שְׁפֹ֔ת (put it on), וְגַם־ (and also) יְצֹ֥ק (pour) בּ֖וֹ (into it) מָֽיִם׃ (water).

4  אֱסֹ֤ף (To gather) נְתָחֶ֙יהָ֙ (its pieces) אֵלֶ֔יהָ (to it)

כָּל־ (every) נֵ֥תַח (piece), ט֖וֹב (good)

יָרֵ֣ךְ (thigh), וְכָתֵ֑ף (and shoulder);

מִבְחַ֥ר (with the choicest) עֲצָמִ֖ים (of limbs) מַלֵּֽא׃ (fill it).

5  מִבְחַ֤ר (The choicest) הַצֹּאן֙ (of the flock), לָק֔וֹחַ (Take)

וְגַ֛ם (and) דּ֥וּר (pile up the) הָעֲצָמִ֖ים (bones) תַּחְתֶּ֑יהָ (under it)

רַתַּ֣ח (bring to a boil), רְתָחֶ֔יהָ (the boiling of it)

גַּם־ (and) בָּשְׁל֥וּ (let seethe) עֲצָמֶ֖יהָ (the limbs) בְּתוֹכָֽהּ׃ס (in the midst of it).

6  לָכֵ֞ן (Therefore) כֹּה־ (thus) אָמַ֣ר׀ (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהֹוִ֗ה (YHWH);

אוֹי֮ (Woe to) עִ֣יר (the city), הַדָּמִים֒ (of blood)

סִ֚יר (the pot) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) חֶלְאָתָ֣ה (has rust) בָ֔הּ (in it)

וְחֶ֨לְאָתָ֔הּ (and its corrosion) לֹ֥א (not) יָצְאָ֖ה (has gone out) מִמֶּ֑נָּה (from it)

לִנְתָחֶ֤יהָ (piece) לִנְתָחֶ֙יהָ֙ (after piece); הוֹצִיאָ֔הּ (bring out from it)

לֹא־ (not) נָפַ֥ל (has fallen) עָלֶ֖יהָ (on it) גּוֹרָֽל׃ (a lot).

7  כִּ֤י (For) דָמָהּ֙ (her blood) בְּתוֹכָ֣הּ (in her midst) הָיָ֔ה (is)

עַל־ (upon) צְחִ֥יחַ (a clear place) סֶ֖לַע (of a rock); שָׂמָ֑תְהוּ (she set it)

לֹ֤א (not) שְׁפָכַ֙תְהוּ֙ (she has poured it out) עַל־ (on) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the ground),

לְכַסּ֥וֹת (to cover) עָלָ֖יו (over it) עָפָֽר׃ (with dust);

8  לְהַעֲל֤וֹת (to cause to come up) חֵמָה֙ (fury)

לִנְקֹ֣ם (to avenge) נָקָ֔ם (with vengeance);

נָתַ֥תִּי (I have given) אֶת־ (-) דָּמָ֖הּ (her blood) עַל־ (upon) צְחִ֣יחַ (a clear place) סָ֑לַע (of a rock),

לְבִלְתִּ֖י (that not) הִכָּסֽוֹת׃פ (it should be covered).

9  לָכֵ֗ן (Therefore) כֹּ֤ה (thus) אָמַר֙ (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִ֔ה (YHWH)

א֖וֹי (Woe to) עִ֣יר (the city)! הַדָּמִ֑ים (Of blood)

גַּם־ (Even) אֲנִ֖י (I) אַגְדִּ֥יל (will make great) הַמְּדוּרָֽה׃ (the pyre).

10  הַרְבֵּ֤ה (Heap on) הָעֵצִים֙ (the wood), הַדְלֵ֣ק (kindle) הָאֵ֔שׁ (the fire),

הָתֵ֖ם (consume) הַבָּשָׂ֑ר (the flesh),

וְהַרְקַח֙ (and mix in) הַמֶּרְקָחָ֔ה (the spices),

וְהָעֲצָמ֖וֹת (and the bones) יֵחָֽרוּ׃ (let be burned up).

11  וְהַעֲמִידֶ֥הָ (And set it) עַל־ (on) גֶּחָלֶ֖יהָ (its coals) רֵקָ֑ה (empty)

לְמַ֨עַן (so that) תֵּחַ֜ם (it may become hot) וְחָ֣רָה (and may burn), נְחֻשְׁתָּ֗הּ (its bronze) וְנִתְּכָ֤ה (it will be melted) בְתוֹכָהּ֙ (in the midst)

טֻמְאָתָ֔הּ (of its impurity)

תִּתֻּ֖ם (consumed) חֶלְאָתָֽהּ׃ (its corrosion).

12  תְּאֻנִ֖ים (With toiling), הֶלְאָ֑ת (she has grown weary)

וְלֹֽא־ (and not) תֵצֵ֤א (has gone out) מִמֶּ֙נָּה֙ (from her) רַבַּ֣ת (the abundance) חֶלְאָתָ֔הּ (of her corrosion)

בְּאֵ֖שׁ (into the fire) חֶלְאָתָֽהּ׃ (with her corrosion).

13  בְּטֻמְאָתֵ֖ךְ (In your uncleanness) זִמָּ֑ה (and wickedness).

יַ֤עַן (Because) טִֽהַרְתִּיךְ֙ (I have cleansed you)

וְלֹ֣א (and not) טָהַ֔רְתְּ (you would be cleansed),

מִטֻּמְאָתֵךְ֙ (from your uncleanness)

לֹ֣א (not) תִטְהֲרִי־ (will you be cleansed) ע֔וֹד (anymore),

עַד־ (until) הֲנִיחִ֥י (I have caused to rest) אֶת־ (-) חֲמָתִ֖י (My fury) בָּֽךְ׃ (on you).

14  אֲנִ֨י (I) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) דִּבַּ֙רְתִּי֙ (have spoken it)

בָּאָ֣ה (it is coming), וְעָשִׂ֔יתִי (and I will do it)

לֹֽא־ (not) אֶפְרַ֥ע (will hold back), וְלֹא־ (and not) אָח֖וּס (will I show pity),

וְלֹ֣א (and not) אֶנָּחֵ֑ם (will I relent);

כִּדְרָכַ֤יִךְ (according to your ways),

וְכַעֲלִילוֹתַ֙יִךְ֙ (and according to your deeds), שְׁפָט֔וּךְ (they will judge you)

נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֥י (of the Lord) יְהֹוִֽה׃פ (YHWH).

Ezekiel’s Wife Dies

15  וַיְהִ֥י (And came) דְבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֵלַ֥י (to me) לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 16  בֶּן־ (Son) אָדָ֕ם (of man), הִנְנִ֨י (behold—I) לֹקֵ֧חַ (am taking away) מִמְּךָ֛ (from you) אֶת־ (-) מַחְמַ֥ד (the desire) עֵינֶ֖יךָ (of your eyes) בְּמַגֵּפָ֑ה (with a stroke); וְלֹ֤א (and not) תִסְפֹּד֙ (will you mourn) וְלֹ֣א (and not) תִבְכֶּ֔ה (will you weep), וְל֥וֹא (and not) תָב֖וֹא (will run down) דִּמְעָתֶֽךָ׃ (your tears). 17  הֵאָנֵ֣ק׀ (Groan), דֹּ֗ם (keep silent) מֵתִים֙ (for the dead), אֵ֣בֶל (mourning) לֹֽא־ (no) תַֽעֲשֶׂ֔ה (you shall make) פְאֵֽרְךָ֙ (your turban) חֲב֣וֹשׁ (bind) עָלֶ֔יךָ (on you) וּנְעָלֶ֖יךָ (and your sandals) תָּשִׂ֣ים (place) בְּרַגְלֶ֑יךָ (on your feet), וְלֹ֤א (and do not) תַעְטֶה֙ (put a wrap) עַל־ (over) שָׂפָ֔ם (the lip), וְלֶ֥חֶם (and the bread) אֲנָשִׁ֖ים (of men) לֹ֥א (do not) תֹאכֵֽל׃ (eat).

18  וָאֲדַבֵּ֤ר (And I spoke) אֶל־ (to) הָעָם֙ (the people) בַּבֹּ֔קֶר (in the morning), וַתָּ֥מָת (and died); אִשְׁתִּ֖י (my wife) בָּעָ֑רֶב (in the evening) וָאַ֥עַשׂ (and I did) בַּבֹּ֖קֶר (in the morning) כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) צֻוֵּֽיתִי׃ (I was commanded).

19  וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ (And said) אֵלַ֖י (to me) הָעָ֑ם (the people) הֲלֹֽא־ (Not) תַגִּ֥יד (will you declare) לָ֙נוּ֙ (to us) מָה־ (what) אֵ֣לֶּה (these things) לָּ֔נוּ (are to us) כִּ֥י (that) אַתָּ֖ה (you) עֹשֶֽׂה׃ (are doing this).

20  וָאֹמַ֖ר (And I gave the answer), אֲלֵיהֶ֑ם (to them) דְּבַ֨ר־ (The word) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) הָיָ֥ה (came) אֵלַ֖י (to me) לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying). 21  אֱמֹ֣ר׀ (Speak) לְבֵ֣ית (to the house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel), כֹּֽה־ (thus) אָמַר֮ (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִה֒ (YHWH); הִנְנִ֨י (Behold, I) מְחַלֵּ֤ל (am going to profane) אֶת־ (-) מִקְדָּשִׁי֙ (My sanctuary), גְּא֣וֹן (the pride) עֻזְּכֶ֔ם (of your⁺ strength), מַחְמַ֥ד (the desire) עֵֽינֵיכֶ֖ם (of your⁺ eyes), וּמַחְמַ֣ל (and the delight); נַפְשְׁכֶ֑ם (of your⁺ soul) וּבְנֵיכֶ֧ם (and your⁺ sons) וּבְנֽוֹתֵיכֶ֛ם (and daughters) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whom) עֲזַבְתֶּ֖ם (you⁺ left behind) בַּחֶ֥רֶב (by the sword) יִפֹּֽלוּ׃ (will fall).

22  וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֖ם (And you⁺ will do) כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר (as) עָשִׂ֑יתִי (I have done); עַל־ (upon) שָׂפָם֙ (your lips), לֹ֣א (not) תַעְט֔וּ (shall you⁺ put a wrap) וְלֶ֥חֶם (and bread) אֲנָשִׁ֖ים (of men) לֹ֥א (not) תֹאכֵֽלוּ׃ (shall you⁺ eat). 23  וּפְאֵרֵכֶ֣ם (And your⁺ turbans will be) עַל־ (on) רָאשֵׁיכֶ֗ם (your⁺ heads), וְנַֽעֲלֵיכֶם֙ (and your⁺ sandals) בְּרַגְלֵיכֶ֔ם (on your⁺ feet). לֹ֥א (Not) תִסְפְּד֖וּ (will you⁺ mourn) וְלֹ֣א (and not) תִבְכּ֑וּ (weep); וּנְמַקֹּתֶם֙ (and you⁺ will waste away) בַּעֲוֺנֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם (in your⁺ iniquities), וּנְהַמְתֶּ֖ם (and will groan) אִ֥ישׁ (a man) אֶל־ (toward) אָחִֽיו׃ (his brother).

24  וְהָיָ֨ה (And will be) יְחֶזְקֵ֤אל (Ezekiel) לָכֶם֙ (to you⁺) לְמוֹפֵ֔ת (as a sign); כְּכֹ֥ל (according to all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עָשָׂ֖ה (he has done) תַּעֲשׂ֑וּ (you⁺ will do); בְּבֹאָ֕הּ (and in its coming to pass), וִֽידַעְתֶּ֕ם (and you⁺ will know) כִּ֥י (that) אֲנִ֖י (I am) אֲדֹנָ֥י (the Lord) יְהוִֽה׃ס (YHWH).

25  וְאַתָּ֣ה (And you) בֶן־ (son) אָדָ֔ם (of man), הֲל֗וֹא (is it not) בְּי֨וֹם (in the day) קַחְתִּ֤י (of My taking) מֵהֶם֙ (from them) אֶת־ (-) מָ֣עוּזָּ֔ם (their stronghold), מְשׂ֖וֹשׂ (their joy) תִּפְאַרְתָּ֑ם (their glory), אֶת־ (-) מַחְמַ֤ד (the desire) עֵֽינֵיהֶם֙ (of their eyes), וְאֶת־ (and) מַשָּׂ֣א (the burden) נַפְשָׁ֔ם (of their soul), בְּנֵיהֶ֖ם (their sons) וּבְנוֹתֵיהֶֽם׃ (and their daughters), 26  בַּיּ֣וֹם (on the day) הַה֔וּא (that) יָב֥וֹא (will come) הַפָּלִ֖יט (one who escapes) אֵלֶ֑יךָ (to you) לְהַשְׁמָע֖וּת (as a cause to hear) אָזְנָֽיִם׃ (the ears)? 27  בַּיּ֣וֹם (On the day) הַה֗וּא (that) יִפָּ֤תַח (will be opened) פִּ֙יךָ֙ (your mouth) אֶת־ (-) הַפָּלִ֔יט (to the one who has escaped), וּתְדַבֵּ֕ר (and you will speak), וְלֹ֥א (and not) תֵֽאָלֵ֖ם (will you be mute); ע֑וֹד (any longer) וְהָיִ֤יתָ (and you will be) לָהֶם֙ (for them) לְמוֹפֵ֔ת (as a sign) וְיָדְע֖וּ (and they will know) כִּֽי־ (that) אֲנִ֥י (I am) יְהוָֽה׃ס (YHWH).
