Timothy’s Visit

1 Διὸ (Therefore) μηκέτι (no longer) στέγοντες (bearing it) εὐδοκήσαμεν (we thought it good) καταλειφθῆναι (to be left) ἐν (in) Ἀθήναις (Athens) μόνοι (alone), 2 καὶ (and) ἐπέμψαμεν (we sent) Τιμόθεον (Timothy), τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) ἡμῶν (of us) καὶ (and) συνεργὸν (fellow worker) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) εὐαγγελίῳ (gospel) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), εἰς (in order) τὸ (-) στηρίξαι (to strengthen) ὑμᾶς (you⁺) καὶ (and) παρακαλέσαι (to encourage) ὑπὲρ (on behalf of) τῆς (the) πίστεως (faith) ὑμῶν (of you⁺) 3 τὸ (that) μηδένα (no one) σαίνεσθαι (be disturbed) ἐν (in) ταῖς (-) θλίψεσιν (tribulations) ταύταις (these). αὐτοὶ (Yourselves) γὰρ (for) οἴδατε (you⁺ know) ὅτι (that) εἰς (for) τοῦτο (this) κείμεθα (we are destined)· 4 καὶ (Even) γὰρ (for) ὅτε (when) πρὸς (with) ὑμᾶς (you⁺) ἦμεν (we were), προελέγομεν (we were saying beforehand) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) ὅτι (that) μέλλομεν (we are about) θλίβεσθαι (to suffer tribulation), καθὼς (just as) καὶ (also) ἐγένετο (it came to pass) καὶ (and) οἴδατε (you⁺ know). 5 διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this) κἀγὼ (I also) μηκέτι (no longer) στέγων (bearing it) ἔπεμψα (sent) εἰς (in order) τὸ (-) γνῶναι (to know) τὴν (the) πίστιν (faith) ὑμῶν (of you⁺), μή (lest) πως (somehow) ἐπείρασεν (had tempted) ὑμᾶς (you⁺) ὁ (the one) πειράζων (tempting) καὶ (and) εἰς (in) κενὸν (vain) γένηται (might be) ὁ (the) κόπος (labor) ἡμῶν (of us).

6 Ἄρτι (Presently) δὲ (however) ἐλθόντος (having come) Τιμοθέου (Timothy) πρὸς (to) ἡμᾶς (us) ἀφ’ (from) ὑμῶν (you⁺) καὶ (and) εὐαγγελισαμένου (having brought good news) ἡμῖν (to us) τὴν (of the) πίστιν (faith) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) ἀγάπην (love) ὑμῶν (of you⁺), καὶ (and) ὅτι (that) ἔχετε (you⁺ have) μνείαν (a remembrance) ἡμῶν (of us) ἀγαθὴν (good) πάντοτε (always), ἐπιποθοῦντες (longing) ἡμᾶς (us) ἰδεῖν (to see) καθάπερ (just as) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we) ὑμᾶς (you⁺), 7 διὰ (because of) τοῦτο (this) παρεκλήθημεν (we were encouraged), ἀδελφοί (brothers), ἐφ’ (over) ὑμῖν (you⁺) ἐπὶ (in) πάσῃ (all) τῇ (the) ἀνάγκῃ (hardship) καὶ (and) θλίψει (tribulation) ἡμῶν (of us) διὰ (because of) τῆς (-) ὑμῶν (your⁺) πίστεως (faith), 8 ὅτι (For) νῦν (now) ζῶμεν (we live) ἐὰν (if) ὑμεῖς (you⁺) στήκετε (are standing firm) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord).

9 Τίνα (What) γὰρ (for) εὐχαριστίαν (thanksgiving) δυνάμεθα (are we able) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God) ἀνταποδοῦναι (to recompense) περὶ (concerning) ὑμῶν (you⁺) ἐπὶ (over) πάσῃ (all) τῇ (the) χαρᾷ (joy) ᾗ (with which) χαίρομεν (we rejoice) δι’ (because of) ὑμᾶς (you⁺) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τοῦ (the) Θεοῦ (God) ἡμῶν (of us), 10 νυκτὸς (night) καὶ (and) ἡμέρας (day) ὑπερεκπερισσοῦ (exceedingly) δεόμενοι (imploring) εἰς (in order) τὸ (-) ἰδεῖν (to see) ὑμῶν (your⁺) τὸ (-) πρόσωπον (face) καὶ (and) καταρτίσαι (to complete) τὰ (the things) ὑστερήματα (lacking) τῆς (of) πίστεως (the faith) ὑμῶν (of you⁺)?

11 Αὐτὸς (Himself) δὲ (now) ὁ (the) Θεὸς (God) καὶ (and) Πατὴρ (Father) ἡμῶν (of us) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) κατευθύναι (may direct) τὴν (the) ὁδὸν (way) ἡμῶν (of us) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you⁺)· 12 ὑμᾶς (you⁺) δὲ (now) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) πλεονάσαι (may cause to increase) καὶ (and) περισσεύσαι (to abound) τῇ (-) ἀγάπῃ (in love) εἰς (for) ἀλλήλους (one another) καὶ (and) εἰς (for) πάντας (all), καθάπερ (just as) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we) εἰς (for) ὑμᾶς (you⁺), 13 εἰς (in order) τὸ (-) στηρίξαι (to strengthen) ὑμῶν (your⁺) τὰς (-) καρδίας (hearts) ἀμέμπτους (blameless) ἐν (in) ἁγιωσύνῃ (holiness) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τοῦ (the) Θεοῦ (God) καὶ (and) πατρὸς (Father) ἡμῶν (of us) ἐν (at) τῇ (the) παρουσίᾳ (coming) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) μετὰ (with) πάντων (all) τῶν (the) ἁγίων (saints) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ἀμήν (Amen).
