1And when He had finished all His sayings in the ears of the people, He went into Capernaum.

2Now a certain centurion's servant, who was cherished by him, was ill and about to die. 3And after hearing about Jesus, he sent the elders of the Jews to beseech Him to come and heal his servant. 4And after coming to Jesus, they besought Him earnestly, saying that he was worthy to whom He should grant this. 5"For he loves our nation," they said, "and he built the synagogue for us." 6Then Jesus went with them; but when He was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to Him, saying to Him, "Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy that You should come under my roof; 7Therefore, neither did I count myself worthy to come to You; but say the word, and my servant shall be healed. 8For I also am a man appointed under authority, having soldiers under myself, and I say to this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and to another, 'Come,' and he comes; and to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it." 9And when He heard these things, Jesus was amazed at him; and turning to the multitude following Him, He said, "I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith." 10And when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the sick servant in good health.

11Now it came to pass on the next day that He went into a city called Nain; and many of His disciples went with Him, and a great multitude. 12And as He drew near to the gate of the city, behold, one who had died was being carried out, an only son to his mother, and she was a widow; and a considerable crowd from the city was with her. 13And when the Lord saw her, He was moved with compassion for her and said to her, "Do not weep." 14And He came up to the bier and touched it, and those who were bearing it stopped. Then He said, "Young man, I say to you, arise!" 15And the dead man sat up and began to speak, and He gave him to his mother. 16Then fear seized everyone, and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has risen up among us," and, "God has visited His people." 17And this report about Him went out into all Judea and all the country around.

18Then John's disciples brought word to him about all these things. 19And after calling two certain disciples, John sent them to Jesus, saying, "Are You He Who was to come, or are we to look for another? 20And when the men came to Him, they said, "John the Baptist has sent us to You, saying, 'Are You He Who was to come, or are we to look for another?' " 21Now in the same hour, He healed many of diseases and scourges and evil spirits, and He granted sight to many who were blind. 22And Jesus answered and said to them, "When you have gone, relate to John the things you have seen and heard: that the blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the gospel is preached to the poor. 23And blessed is everyone who shall not be offended in Me."

24Now after the messengers of John had left, He began to speak to the multitudes concerning John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to gaze at? A reed shaken by the wind? 25But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who dress in splendid clothing and live in luxury are in the palaces. 26But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and one more excellent than a prophet.

27This is he concerning whom it is written, 'Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who shall prepare Your way before You. '

28For I tell you, among those who have been born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist; but the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he." 29Now all the people and the tax collectors who heard this justified God because they had been baptized with the baptism of John. 30But the Pharisees and the doctors of the law had set aside the counsel of God concerning themselves, and had not been baptized by him.

31And the Lord said, "To what then shall I compare the men of this generation? And what are they like? 32They are like little children sitting and calling to one another in the marketplace, and saying, 'We have piped to you, but you did not dance; we have mourned to you, but you did not weep. ' 33For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you said, 'He has a demon. ' 34The Son of man has come eating and drinking, and you say, 'Behold, a gluttonous man and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners?; 35But wisdom is justified by all her children."

36Now one of the Pharisees invited Him to eat with him. And after going into the Pharisee?s house, He sat down at the table. 37And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that He was sitting in the Pharisee?s house, took an alabaster flask of ointment; 38And she stood weeping behind Him, and knelt at His feet, and began to wash His feet with her tears and to wipe them with the hairs of her head; and she was ardently kissing His feet and anointing them with the ointment. 39But when he saw this, the Pharisee who had invited Him spoke within himself, saying, "This Man, if He were a prophet, would have known who and what the woman is who is touching Him because she is a sinner."

40Then Jesus answered and said to him, "Simon, I have something to say to you." And he said, "Teacher, say on." 41"There were two debtors of a certain creditor; one owed five hundred silver coins, and the other fifty. 42But when they did not have anything with which to pay him, he forgave them both. Tell Me then, which of them will love him most?" 43And Simon answered and said, "I suppose the one whom he forgave the most." And He said to him, "You have judged rightly." 44And after turning to the woman, He said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I came into your house, and you did not provide any water to wash My feet; but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hairs of her head. 45You did not give Me a kiss; but she, from the time I came in, has not ceased to ardently kiss My feet. 46You did not anoint My head with oil; but she has anointed My feet with ointment. 47For this cause, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven because she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, he loves little." 48And He said to her, "Your sins have been forgiven." 49Then those who were sitting with Him began to say within themselves, "Who is this, Who even forgives sins?" 50But He said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you. Go in peace."
